If you've seen You Tube 29 - Part one , you will have seen that I was so relieved to find that my husbands commissioned piece for his 60th birthday came out of the kiln, and was pretty ok. Not perfect, but I was so relieved as I only had a few days before the big day.
After a good nights sleep (thinking all was ok) I then checked on the hidden mug the following day. Only to find that the glaze had shivered off all the rim and down the handle. Never had this or seen this before and I was so gutted.
With no idea why this happened I had to get my thinking cap on.
I used Amaco Albany Slip Brown but fired the kiln too hot. It needed to be a cone 5-6. and my witness cone showed a 6.5. So was this too hot?
Or was it an incompatibility with my clay - although it was fine on my test tiles?
My only option was to re-glaze and try again, keeping everything crossed and praying for help from the kiln gods. This time I added my trusted Maycoshino and a touch of flux, also a cooler 5.5 firing. Please don't blister I whispered as I closed the lid!!
My work commitments meant I was away for a few days and this left me minimal time for a refire, but here it is, with such little time before his birthday. You can see how anxious I am, and whilst its only a cider mug, & I can make him another one , I put a lot of thought into the shape, the handle and keeping it a secret from hubby.
Its shrunk considerably, but I can confirm this piece made it to the birthday celebrations, and it was very much appreciated, although I will be making him another one LOL
Always a journey of learning and discovery, but this time a lot more emotions mixed in the pot!

That means a lot thankyou. I do feel I bare my soul sometimes and never know what to expect when opening the lid, but hey that's the beauty isnt it lol

Oh I’m sooo happy for you!!! My goodness! That’s an absolutely beautiful mug and I love the leaves!! I adore the bottom as well. It’s so creative. Muddy waters needs to be pretty thick with lots of crystals and leave lots of room for it to drip and you will see all of the beautiful blues!!

Hi Michele, Could you see the anxiety followed by the huge relief). I'm usually such a chatterbox and bubbly - so this quieter, calmer version of me is the anxious one LOL! Oh thanks for that advice. I'll give Muddy waters another go on a taller piece then, and see what results I get. Mark did love his mug and he had no idea the trauma I had with it LOL! My sister in law Jo loved her leaves and they are now pride of place in her dining room. Was fun to do something a little different. I've started playing with a little mandela style scraffito on the base of some larger based pieces, and finding it very therapeutic. Still early days, but finding my groove a little it feels. Thanks as always for the feedback and advice, so much appreciated

Oh Jeanette, I could feel your apprehension through the screen bless you. Glad the tankers turned out well in the end, beautiful colour on the leaf plates. I'm not so keen on Matt either, I think I read matt is as food safe as a gloss, I may be wrong, I am a shiny girl😅 Lovely to have your videos pop up on my RU-vid its always a good day when I have one of your video's to watch😁

Thanks Julia. Took me a while to get around to uploading these. Feels like an eternity ago! I have to agree with you my personal preference is glossy too. The relief when Marks tankard was OK, not as I wanted, but at least I could gift him on the day. Just 3 x firings resulted in far more shrinkage that I wanted lol.

Lol, I was so anxious! Such a relief! This opening was first week in June and its just taken me a while to upload. So I'm out of sync at the moment. The reglaze of the blue plates is in number 27. A little bitter sweet..... hoping my run of failures and challenges has passed for a few weeks lol

Oh thankyou, I'm still in experimental stages with them, and would like to refine so much more. But really enjoying the process. Thankyou for your feedback 😊
