I am an amateur herbalist and our journey has been similar to yours. My goal is the same as yours to grow as much as we can, but I haven't found a good source for finding seeds for some of those herbs. Have you found a good seed source for herbs that grow well in the states?
You have learned so much over the years. When all three of you were little, you only had to take antibiotics 3 different times. After I learned the uses of herbs we just didn't have to take synthetic meds. Love herbs!! Love that you are doing so much with them.
Jen I’m a grower at a plant nursery with a horticulture degree and I’ve been hoping to start my own growing business just for edibles and herbs for culinary and medicinal uses. Loved this video and hope you do more on this subject as there is not a better teacher than hands on and living experience. Thank you.💜
May I suggest looking at the Honeystead You Tube site for inspiration in herbs production. It’s a Mother/Daughter team that have a business in herbs etc. May I also suggest to start buying your 100% vodka ( cheapest is fine) it’s rising in price and should shortages happen it’s also a good bartering item to have…..every time I walk into our Kroger liquor area I have to laugh …I bet the young guy thinks granny is a boozer…..😜
Jenn, I have always had a fascination with herbal, holistic medicine. Then I was dx’d with RA, 35 years ago. It turned to big pharma & now I have up & down challenges with kidney & liver. My daughters have really helped me get back to nature & I am stepping off strong meds & moving to a better life, I have more energy now than I did 10 years ago. I am excited to get an herb book a month & build up my library, I already have a few from gifts. I am focusing on my autoimmune issues, my sweet hubby’s COPD, diabetic issues & allergy issues. If I can conquer just a couple of these challenges I know we would be so much healthier. No one wants to retire & fall apart! We are in our golden years, not the rusted ones. I love you kids so much. I keep telling my hubby we need to stay a week at the cortège on the hill so I can learn more from you. Thanks for standing firm!!! Blessings!!!
@@bonnied3550 I have the Materia Medica of Western Herbs by Carole Fisher. It describes the herb, tells what it is used for, whether internal/external/both, gives dosage, precautions, interactions, etc. It is an excellent resource.
I'm so into herbs. I'm growing at least half of those plus many more. . there's so much to learn in how to use them and what to use them for. Can't wait to see what you are doing with your herbs
i just started doing medicinal herbs last year and have been building up my herbal garden...been learning a ton...last year when i first started i collected TONS of mullein from my sisters house....then all of a sudden we had TONS growing here at our house....this came into a big play this year with covid....super excited for this year to plant so much more....thks for this great video....looking forward to many more....
Very interesting! I am planting stinging nettle this year in hopes it might help my fibromyalgia/chronic pain issues. Always a pleasure to watch you and learn!
I too have Fibromyalgia/chronic pain, and degenerative disk disease. I really would like to learn natural herbal ways to help with the pain and inflammation. I’ve been on meds for them for so long. I feel that my quality of life would be better if I could get off the meds. I would very much appreciate learning more about herbal medicine. Thank you for sharing Jen.
Jen, I’ve tried many different pain meds, narcotics, NSAIDs, steroids, epidural injections, for acute /chronic pain. The only relief I’ve had was from essential oils which helped within 15 minutes. They helped relaxing my muscles and allowing me to continue with PT to help realign my spine, regain function of my hands, etc. . As a Nurse I can’t advise people to take them but as a patient I know what worked for me without bad side effects. I look forward to learning more about medicinal medicine & pray that Western Medicine continues to adapt more medicinal medications. There is a need for both and in time hopefully we will find that balance.
I've loved growing my own herbs and making tinctures and salves. Every year I try and grow something new. Side note I just want to say I love how Zach watches you while you're talking. He looks so proud even if it's your interest and not his ❤️it shows how much he loves you.
Ive spent the past 3 years studying and learning herbs and the medicinal benefits from them. I still don't know them all, but thats the fun thing about learning, it never ends lol. I made the decision in 2020 not to rely on our health care system anymore, its a personal choice and one that Im very much okay with making. Herbs have been thrown to the back burner as an "alternative" to medicine, when in fact there is no better medicine on the planet than herbs and vegetables. Thank you for sharing your bulk herb haul with us! I love Starwest
I would love a series where you show us how to do one remedy/ show especially for us beginners. It is one thing to read it,(I’m a visual learner) but to see it done would be great. Maybe one a week? Thanks for all you do!
Of the herb you listed; chaste tree, turmeric, valerian, astragulus, anice are the only ones I don't grow but I'm currently trying to sprout some turmeric root. I like to grow or be able to gather everything I might need. You should look into usnea, I bet you can find it in your area, it's referred to as the Doxycycline of the plant world. I always have a jar of it sitting on the shelf.
I've been getting very interested in herbs and the work of God's natural medicine. Our house of 5 just got over and is still trying to get rid of the nasty cough from our chest colds. Great video ☺️ have a blessed weekend.
This is such a great video. I Love love love herbs too. Prob my favorite things to grow. Oregano is another great one to have. Has great antibiotic properties.
I have bought fresh turmeric and dehydrated to put in teas along with ginger. I actually just bought both of those to plant my own because I’m using so much in my teas.
Jenn if I could suggest a great book. “ The lost book of Herbal Remedies”. It’s a great book of knowledge. Many of the things you could find right on your property
One item can treat multiple conditions. Example: mullein tea is more effective for asthma than tincture or capsules. Dandelion roots are specific for specific conditions where the leaves are effective for specific others and flowers are specific for others. So research is key. Also... Echinacea roots need to become established for 4-5 years before harvesting. I have an herbalist friend who has helped me so much identifying plants on my property where I can go out and harvest and encourage to grow and utilize the things that are there. Teaching me what is harmful and what is good medicine. I also love Rosemary's books they are my favorite resources. I created a bed specific for my stinging nettle to keep it contained so that it's not out in the grass or where anybody can get poked as they walk by. I generally warn people that that is not mint so not to touch it. I harvest it through the year, to dry, powder and tincture or capsulate.
I have been using ginger for as long as I can remember. Having a great deal of digestive issues all my life & ginger offered relief. I think it was my grandmother who started giving me real ginger ale with the bubbles stirred out. I have carried that with me & expanded on it. I’m a nurse & everyone I worked with knew I had ginger tea with me at all times, when a resident felt I’ll & they were on call they would seek me out for one of teas.
Awhile back I watched a video of yours where you mentioned the benefits of lemon balm tincture on cold sores. I grew some lemon balm and made a tincture and I have had the occasion to put it to the test a couple times this winter and I must say, I am very pleased with the results.
Our daughter and son-in-law have done the herbs, tinctures, etc. forever! Grandkids never go to the dr. They also homeschool as well and kids are now almost done!
Ya Know... You could talk about herbs all the time and it would never be enough. Thank you for doing this. I've been treating myself and (sometimes) my husband and daughter with herbs, EO's, tinctures etc for several years. This is the year I decided to start growing a medicinal herb garden. I've been researching all the different herbs, which ones are most useful and how to grow them and I bought seeds for them. I live in North Central Arkansas where Burdock, Chickweed and Nettle are 'weeds' so I didn't need to find any seeds for those. Thank you for this and for being willing to step forward to talk about it.
Love this so much! The people need this info! The earth has everything we need for health! So many helpful herbs grow wildly too! Just keep your eyes open!(chickweed/cleavers/violets/mullein/yarrow/dandelion) and so many more! Get outdoors and meet your local wild medicine cabinet!💚🌱✌🏼
I really loved you show today I'm heading to the library tomorrow. My Dr had my get turmeric and put it in capsules and take 3 times a day for a frozen shoulder and it really worked it helped with pain and help heal so much faster.
I normally buy from mountain rose herbs or a local Herb shop that's quite pricey. I'm super happy to see that I have an alternative thank you for sharing
I find this subject very interesting. I hope you keep up the videos on the use of herbs. I for one am going to get some of the books you have. Y'all stay safe and God bless.
Ordered the book! I have used essential oils for many years and want to add more herbs. Thanks for the video. I keep wanting to book a weekend in your cottage and volunteer to help and learn. 🥰
Hi, Jen. Thank you so much for talking about this stuff. I’m a nurse but I have always been much more fascinated by natural and holistic medicine. I did a deep dive with essential oils a few years back but have just recently been trying to learn more about herbs and how to use them in the right way. I know this platform has rules that prevent you from REALLY sharing your knowledge but any information on this topic is going to be great. Thanks again, Jen. ~~ Jen from Massachusetts
Great Video!! Love all the info. I've been an avid essential oil user for years. Thanks for addressing the stigma and bias that's sometimes out there for treating our families in these alternative ways. BTW, I agree Bulk Apothecary is amazing!
So interesting! I was realizing that so many of the herbs you recommended/bought, I actually have available growing. Two you didn't mention that is used widely in Asian medicine that I also have are ashwaganda and Tulsi/Holy basil. A native herb that I've grown to love that grows as a weed here is wild lettuce. One I don't have that you mentioned that I absolutely want to grow is astragalus. Thank you for sharing! I hope to hear a lot more about how you use herbs!
love this video. when you talked about rosemary, i had to smile. i live in california and have a giant rosemary plant that i grew from a 4 inch pot. it is currently 9 ft wide by 6 ft tall! i have grown just because the bees like it and i don’t have to water it!
Hi, I’m a new subscriber, just found y’all this morning I think herbs are amazing My Uncle Ballard lived 15 years because his daughter used herbs to dr him We are in Ky, several years ago we went and seen an iridologist several years back, he was amazing, he was Amish, sadly now he has retired. I look forward to watching more of y’all
Love this! I'm just starting my 3rd trimester of pregnancy so I need to start chugging the red raspberry leaf tea! I did it with my 1st pregnancy and it made my labor fast and easy!
Jen, thank you for this video!! I have studied herbs for years and have many books but I did not have the one you showed so I just ordered it. I hope you go through each one and tell us what you use it for and show us the steps to make the recipe. This is my favorite subject by the way. We just sold our place to downsize now that we are retired and empty nesters and waiting for our new build. Hubby says no more garden work but I told him I have to have herbs.
I love doing herbs any time I can. My great grandmother's practice got me interested in this stuff many decades ago. I love wild picked and growing my own, but I can't grow everything. Luckily I have some good sources, too. My first love of weeds is plantain. My second love of weeds is wild lettuce for pain. My third love of weeds is spilanthes. My fourth; catnip, natural Valium. And in no particular order, but I I love: Calendula Black seed Marshmallow or slippery elm Mints Chamomile Fennel
So glad to see you do this! It's a passion of mine also and in our new home I'm planning on growing as many as I can but also building up my apothecary cabinet.
Thank you for this video! It has come at the perfect time. After my battle with cancer (1 year free now) I want to take things into my own hands. Grow my own veggies and herbs. Knowing the natural benefits that herbs have to offer is something I want to learn. I will be looking for books and finding out what herbs is best for what ales you. I already use turmeric and ginger in my cooking (fresh and dehydrated) I have started rosemary, mint, sage and plan on expanding my garden this year. I still have a few more weeks to start more herbs and will take this time to read up on this. Again, thank you 🙏🏽
I grew up on organic produce from our organic garden, chickens and rabbits. We didn’t see a doctor unless we were dyin’ 😆. I have always preferred natural healing methods … there is so much to learn! I do know that the shelf life of dried herbs is relatively short, so looking forward to seeing you process your haul into tinctures, teas, decoctions, etc. !
I work in the medical profession and treat myself and anyone in my world that is interested herbally... With great success. And I take alot grief for it. Until they need something....
Questions: Marshmallow Root…I have a marshmallow weed that grows prolifically in my yards. Is this the same plant you mentioned? Raspberry leaf…is that from regular raspberry bushes? Thank you for all that you share 🙏🏼❤️😊
LOVE this!! 💜💜 I love your chamomile and elderberry tinctures. I have my own planted but they aren't to the level to harvest yet. Your comfrey salve is a Godsend! My herb garden is tripling this year.
Bulk Apothecary sells Starwest Botanicals? Nice....FYI--throw a tsp of turmeric powder into your oatmeal--you won't taste it if you add fruit. Also, Nettle and astragalus iced tea tastes like regular iced tea.
I can't find the video where Jen shares what to do to get what you need to get from your county to sell these things., like any licences. I have gotten several of these plants in my own garden because of your know how. Then I started buying the books. Thank you so much for sharing.
You should write a book about the herbs, with recipes for what you use them for... Sure lots of us would buy it. Just something for you to think about. 😉
I think this is amazing!! What's your opinion on Gojo berry's? Jen you're a wonderful person , you have worked so hard to learn so many wonderful thing's!! Blessings to you all!!!
