Vintage Dr. Marten 1460 cut in half to see what's inside and review how well they are made. Vintage Doc marten 1460 were made in England and are supposed to be better quality than the modern dr marten boots. I bought a vintage pair of docs to find out the truth about what's inside vintage doc marten boots. I also cut a normal pair of dr marten boots in half and did a review on the top 4 doc martens. The blueing is on the inside of the leather. If you look closely tou can see a strip of blue in the cross section. The reason it shows on the tongue is because they split the leather in half to make it thinner and more comfortable for the tongue, thus exposing the blueing of the leather. Good question!

@@RoseAnvil This is false information. Chrome-tanned leather does not equal bad quality leather. Please stop pushing the Saddleback false information. Some of the best leathers in the world are chrome tanned.(chromexcel) Veg tan and chrome tanned leathers have different uses. For consumer shoes, chrometanned leather is generally MUCH better than vegtan. Whiteboots which you talked about last video are chrometanned.

Having worn DMs almost all my life, I can tell you that the original Made in England boots were certainly much better than today’s Eastern ones but still were not brilliant quality. They were certainly very fashionable but they were also quite inexpensive back in the late 70s early 80s so people probably didn’t judge them so harshly ( the standard boots cost about £20 back then and I even bought a pair of steel toe DMs for £10 in 1986 ). I always remember at school (before DMs got banned from our school) kids boasting that they had worn through the soles of their boots.

Id like to see you cut open a Solovair. Solovair was one of the manufacturers that DM used up intil they were sold and started to outsource the manufacturing process. That being said Solovair still makes the 1460 esque boots that they used to make for DM but with the same made in England quality of the glory days of DM.
@RoseAnvil
@RoseAnvil 4 года назад
Clint Williams maybe after I cut open the made in England doc martens I’ll get a pit of those so we can compare them against all the versions of docs
@moss1066
@moss1066 4 года назад
Actually Solovair is just a brand name. The actual company that make Solovair is NPS shoes and they are older than gods dog (1881 I think). I used to buy my docs from the first shop that ever sold docs (Holts in Camden Town London now called The British Boot Company still run by the Holt family you can see it in some Madness music videos) last time I brought some boots from there was about ten years ago and they had pretty much stopped selling docs and switched to Solovair due to the piss poor quality of docs now. All the punks in Camden now pretty much only wear Solovair. Griggs sold the docs brand in the 90s, they shifted production to Thailand and it's been downhill ever since. I have a 'for life' guarantee on the last pair of docs I brought and tried to get my replacements last month. They have stopped doing the hardlife ones that replace my for life ones and expect to fob me off with these cheap inferior docs! They will be sending me 2 pairs a year for the rest of my life if they think they are pulling that crap on me I know that much.
@moss1066
@moss1066 4 года назад
NPS are the ones who made the airbounce soles for docs. Buying a pair of Solovair has more real doc DNA than even the made in England docs. The only thing docs did was attach the soles to the leather. Stick with Solovair and you can't go much wrong.
@luissorsini

I had these exact boots back in the day, both in black and brown. Most comfortable shoes I ever owned. I continued to wear Docs for years, until they started being manufactured in Asia and even after that I had a couple of pairs, but quit buying them because the cost was vastly more than the value. Now that they're back in style, but I'm much more concerned with comfort than brand, I can't ever imagine buying another pair of Dr. Martens, not even the Made in England variety. Though in no small part due to this channel I now own two pairs of Solovair, one greasy-black eight eyelet boots and one three-eyelet steel-toed shiny black Oxfords. It's not even close. Solovair by a mile. I'm old-man fashionable, and my feet appreciate it. Subscribed. Thanks!

I'm enjoying this series a lot. About a year ago I found a pair of barely worn pre Thailand MiE docs in a charity shop for £30, bought them but never managed to break them in. Your last video inspired me to give em another go and now they're feeling great. I don't know anything about leather, but putting a bit of the "wonder balsam" they give you with the For Lifes on them seemed to do the trick in the end. The quality difference is absolutely night and day compared with the Thailand boots. Even they way they fit is much better. I'm looking forward to seeing how the new MiE boots compare!

It was 1995 when I bought those exact boots (with the commando soles) they costed back the aprox 65 usd in the most expensive shop in Madrid, in regular season, not Sales. Still use them, still as confortable as ever. Excellent thermal insulation, and with the appropiate dubbin grease, leather is in great shape and when it rains, dry feets even walking all day long!

Rose Anvil They are the aztec / crazy horse model. Essentially a 1460, but with commando soles and only available in brown. Once you buy them, clean them with a brush, mild soap an lukewarm water, let them dry naturally and regrease them with Dubbin grease (its neutral in color itself, but always darkens the leather you treat with) I strongly reccomend you Tarrago brand dubbin grease. Ive been using Campeón and Tarrago brand and they are second to none. This guarantees you a lifetime company unless you wear them on a daily basis the next 5 years.

Sooo i really enjoyed hearing about the quality in dr martens but now the question is: what kind of shoes do you recommend? Maybe similar style but good quality would be great

I wore Docs from about 1992-1995. I only had one pair of shoes/boots at a time, they were virtually identical to the boot in this video except with a different tread pattern on the bottom. They were amazingly comfortable after break-in, but never quite made it thru one calendar year before the sole would embarrassingly separate from the rest of the boot near the toe. I was just a high-school kid with a busy life and a job after school, always expected the boots to last longer... but never made it to the 12 month mark.

I had a pair of steel toe Doc's in the early 00's. They were some of my favorite boots. The next year my employer switched to Redwings so that's what I got.

Shanks are not really useful for casual city boots, tbh..for mountaineering boots, work boots and logging boots where you need stiffness for sure, but for a pair of boots you only wear on paved sidewalks they are less comfortable than a more flexible pair. Also, could the blueing just be the stains caused by coloured socks?
@rachelhowell4600
@rachelhowell4600 4 года назад
Eric Tan-W nope it’s from part of the leather tanning process! If enough people are interested, he’ll make a leather 101 video and go into more details about it!
@RoseAnvil
@RoseAnvil 4 года назад
I think any time a boot has a heel it needs a shank to prevent the collapsing of that gap area. You can feel it in your feet when you wear a boot without a shank. After a year or so it gets really painful
@RoseAnvil
@RoseAnvil 4 года назад
the blueing is on the inside of the leather. If you look closely you can see a strip of blue in the cross section. The reason it shows on the tongue is because they split the leather in half to make it thinner and more comfortable for the tongue, thus exposing the blueing of the leather. Good question!
@driftertravels928
@driftertravels928 4 года назад
Rose Anvil ..Thanks, just wondering cause the leather lining on my old hiking boots, which were perfectly clean at the start, got stained by the dye on wool socks when my feet were sweaty, or maybe even mould! So I’m guessing they are to do with the chrome tanning process then? Btw, I’m really more interested in footwear and am not a leather expert, so thanks for the informative videos.
@RoseAnvil
@RoseAnvil 4 года назад
That’s super interesting. I’m 99% sure the blueing is from the tanning process but you never know ha ha

I wore a pair of 90s Doc's for 4 years until they blew apart. I broke them in at a Big Day Out in Australia on the Gold Coast, they went to 5 Big Day Outs and died at a Big Day Out. Big Day Out was a huge music festival in the 90s. I went hiking in them, went to rave parties, they were so comfortable. I have a pair of modern Vietnamese Docs that I have tried to break in over the last year but they are just uncomfortable. I always just end up wearing my R M William's boots instead.

I've burned through three pairs of Docs in my life. The ones from the 90's took way more of a beating than the lame modern day version. The squared soles were less prone to slipping as well.

I had many pairs of Doc Martins in the 70's in the UK, none had the sole of the boots you have there. Mine had the classic airwair pattern. Made popular by skinheads & suedeheads way before punk. Comfy but the soles were not long lasting. Girls/women originally wore monkey boots not dockers. Was hard to watch a beaut old pair of boots destroyed.
