Worst possible way to get out of a car loan. The final sales price will be LOW. Sell it yourself and payoff the loan. Pay the loan down as quickly as possible. DO NOT BORROW FULL PURCHASE PRICE! Pay a sizable down payment.

I’m glad to see you back Matt. One thing about depreciation that I’ve learned considers cars that you buy new or even used. But pretty much any vehicle you get it going to have a deficiency as soon as you drive it off the lot unless you make a substantial down payment. It doesn’t matter what you get, whether it’s a truck, minivan or a car they’re all going to depreciate fast.

I actually bought a 17 year old car that I knew was cheap on spare parts for a low price that I could afford. Then I put about half of what I'd paid for it into the car right away to get it road-legal. Afterwards in the subsequent 6-8 months, it had several more maintenance items done to it, but all rather low-priced (done by a friend who's a mechanic, so he didn't charge me too much). That means I have had "payments" on the car, and basically I now have a car that's reliable enough so that it would have cost me about what I've put in since. Of course, with an old car, there'll always be maintenance, but it isn't every month, but more like every couple of months, or sometimes there's nothing for half a year or even longer, so that way, it's car payments I can save up on or even chose when to do the repairs (as long as they're not safety-related, which they aren't - and the safety of a vehicle must be checked every 2 years anyways in order to legally stay on the road), so that way, I never had to get into debt in the first place, to have a cheap and fairly reliable daily driver. Nothing fancy or fast, not even pretty, but it works.

Good to hear this. Why won't the repo person take the time to call the finance company?? Literally had this happen after a payment was postponed one day while waiting on UI check to come in & 5 minutes before the man was in the yard the memo popped up the finance company had just received the payment. This man would not even call his boss, instead claimed he called the cops & I was going to be arrested and charged & when I called the police department they said it wasn't true & they weren't on the way. I finally got my finance company on the phone after a 15 minute hold & saw an opening to leave, & left while on the phone with them. I don't know what is going to happen now, but the finance company said the repo was automatically generated and my payment was made. I dont know if he's going to try to show back up or what but I'm not giving him my car, period. I made arrangements and had made the payment.

I've nevr had a car payment or mortgage yet so pardon if this sound dumb. Are you saying that debtors, once they realise the end is nigh, are better off selling the call and paying the debt so they can have some equity rather than just forfeiting the asset?

I learned from an employer of my as a teen to drive a ragged car until you can save enough to buy the car you want. Pay cash and then with the money you would have made in payments save that monthly for your next car..... The bad thing about having a c ar reposed, which you never plan, is if you own more than the car will be sold for by the finance company you are still liable for the remainder unless you bankrupt.

To answer your question, we don't know how or what to do when losing a job or in our case covid shut us down. This is the kind of education needed in schools. If I was taught this I wouldn't have gone through this painful process as the repoman took my car while my wife was loading the groceries. You also mentioned the finance company is not in the business of selling cars.... well people aren't in the business to miss payments due to job loss, etc.. There's a ton of sympathy on the side of the finance company not much on the human side. When people are in a panic situation with no guidance we make decisions to ease the pain of not knowing what to do. The finance company have tons of support on their side whereas the person losing their job is all alone and calling the finance company asking for solutions is like asking a horse to bark. Also, most people do not know how to sell a car, either especially when you are selling your car at a loss and will be left without transportation. There's just so much panic on the end of the human. I keep saying human because that's who you are speaking of when you are repossessing the car. Now, I can understand why you would put the responsibility on the borrower. It IS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY! BUT, there's also a bit of a payoff for you seeing that you have to look in people's faces as they fall apart while you're taking their last life line. No ones clean in this game. Someone i know brought a used 37 foot long limo. Looks to be the same length. That third axle, is most likely just to handle the weight of the hot tub, meaning it may not be a 6x6 wheel drive hummer. It may still be a 4x4.

I remember this video, and I also recall another one where you detailed some strategies for working with the bank to keep the car from being repoed rather than trying to duck the bank and the repoman. It's too bad that your average viewing times are so short as they are generally worth watching all the way through.

Solid advice Matt, two key points. Always go in with a sizable down payment or pay off the loan quicker then intended. Upside down (owing more on the loan then the vehicle is worth) is a serious disaster waiting to happen. Secondly "turning the key back in" doesn't mean life is all of a sudden good. The finance company will normally auction it off at a dealer only auction where it will sell far below market value. And if it doesn't pay off the loan YOU ARE ON THE HOOK FOR THE BALANCE ...... sell it yourself like Matt says way better outcome guaranteed.

The issue I have and that I'm running into now. When I "bought" my truck from a buy here pay here set up they was asking almost 3x the vehicles value. With my credit screwed up like it was then they was the only option I had and I didn't have money to go buy one outright nor did I have the option to go somewhere else or means to repair the vehicle I had (needed a transmission) I do still have the vehicle and am making the payments still but I owe so much on it there is NO way I could ever sell it for any where near the pay off. And the payments are the same as a brand new gmc 2500 with perfect credit. If shit went south they will just have to eat the cost

If you must finance a cheap car just to have a car put it on a credit card instead of taking out a loan, that way there is no lien on it!

I learned years ago that there is no value in a new car. I shop around, find a vehicle that’s been well taken care of and pay cash for it. Even if i have to put money into it to fix something, I’m still way ahead of paying off a new car. Case in point is my current purchase of an 06 Ford Explorer Eddie Bower edition. It looks brand new and all I had to do was put spark plugs and coil packs in it. $6K total and it’s all mine.

Learned from my folks PAY FOR WHAT YOU GET, 40 YEARS AND OWN EVERYTHING I HAVE.

After watching your videos for years and having hard times of my own I have stopped using any car loan that holds a title as collateral. My last 3 cars have been paid with credit cards. In the last 5+ years I've paid no interest💰💰

I've got about 30 channels that post content daily so I like the shorter format so I can try to watch them all daily.

How does one sell a vehicle which one does not hold title and still has a loan on? I ask because I've only ever traded my vehicles in on another vehicle. Personally I would have a hard time making a purchase from a private party which did not provide the title at time of sale.

I pay cash for my vehicles and usually drive them until I don't trust them to get me from point a to b. I never look at my car as an investment. It's a necessity (unfortunately). I drive a 15 year old vehicle that I bought new. It still gets good gas mileage and blows cool air in the summer and hot air in the winter.

You are correct Got do the right thing but in my eyes the right thing is take care of my family and I will do whatever I need to, to take care of my family and if that means play a little bit of cat and mouse until I get the money to keep the bank happy t that's what I'm gonna do because without a vehicle there is no job w8th this day and age right now you best have some kind of income. I've had two repos in the past. First repo, I bought a 2013 ford focus. A week later I was fired. I drove it for as long as possible. (about a year before the tag expired) Hiding it wasn't all that hard but I was eventually found. I was followed from work. I'm not sure how the found me to be honest. I'm not sure if someone told them where I was working.(This was a cash job, no i9) Though I remembered being tailed by a white truck. That same white truck, the dude knocked on my door and was like "oh, wrong house!" and left but right before he left I noticed him go to the front left of my car. I'm sure he was verifying the VIN. They damaged my Wood gate and broke onto my property to get it. That did get replaced by them. I had to fight but it was taken care of. (Breach of peace)

I have a ? For the repo community. I bought a pilot new from the Honda dealership in 05/21, paid cash that day. Have been back every few months for my service as paid for in a package when I got it new. I see the same faces for 6 visits now, and I’ve built a report with a few people there even. So how is it possible some guy tries to repo it from my driveway just tonight, about an hr ago. I’m heated then a mother off of this, they had my stuff hooked up and all. I go out politely and such, dude checks the vin and it matches his repo Oder, the plate even matched his order But the name on it was not mine. I went inside and got the title and showed him the paperwork. I even had the window sticker, receipts from accessory department, ect. He says oh well you better call this bank cuz that’s who put a repo order out. Why would I have to deal with any bank. I paid Love Honda for it new with 13 miles on it.
