Today we review a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix. I bought this car over 4 years ago and it has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Find out if this is the right cheap car for you! Follow me on instagram @toplineracer
@@anicapandzic6194 I actually have a Dodge Neon sitting around right now but it is in pretty rough shape, a little too rough for a review unfortunately.
@@amcmoass1751 I actually think there was a concerted propaganda program to destroy USA domestic car industry from 1975 to present by media and controlled popular culture aimed as a takedown of domestic economy . I worked at a gm dealership as a kid to college better education than my schooling . Have to laugh when I see cars that sold new for $ 3500.00 selling today for $ 60000.00+ Here a good one my 1976 vette has original clutch rotors and steering components with its 19 grease nipples add a supercharger, cam , roller rockers big tube headers hand built 3 inch dual exhaust after an engine overhaul did in my home garage . Race the vette 2 seasons of track racing b street prepared and auto cross / street driven owned it now for 41 years oil the frame undercarriage .
I have an '04 GTP, which I bought brand new. It now has 180,000 on it and it's been a superb ride. It still looks great and is very powerful with the factory Eaton supercharger, plus some mild mods I've added. Unfortunately, the undercarriage is seriously rusting out, (New England) so I'll have to pull it off the road soon. Sad.
You should’ve got it oil sprayed .I live in Ontario Canada oil undercoat all my cars and truck I drill 1/2 holes in rockers and pillars spray the underside . The good news you can do it now and still save the car and then do annually.
Mine now has 266 thousand on it. Paints clear coat is gone very little rust where mentioned. Window regulators all replaced. Cloth interior was changed to leather. Engine runs like new transmission needs line and a cylinoid thing. Radio was replaced. The car had close to 175 thousand on it. Been beat hard put up dry. Parked on and off for 6 mos plus. Absolutely love this car and will eventually put it all back together and looking pretty.
I had a 04 GT2 that was my first vehicle. Got it when it had 198K miles on it, all highway miles from previous owners and in excellent shape. Excellent vehicle all around though I now drive a G8 to which I passed the Grand Prix off to my mom to replace her Buick that was severely rusting out.
I got 07 with 113k for 2800. I bought just because of the 3800 motor, plus I actually like the looks of them. I replaced the rotors and cleaned the throttle body because it seemed like it wanted to.stall at start up. Common that those need cleaned. Has started like a charm ever since. I changed out radio for a blue tooth player.
I brought a 2008 Grand Prix in Dec 2018 with 125k on the motor for $2800 from a friend. I now have 140k and the 3800 engine is running great. I swapped out the plastic coolant elbows with metal ones when I purchased car. I also replaced the rusted power steering lines. I have rust bubble staring to form on the rear fender area, will fix that before winter. Always been a GM/Pontiac fan. My dad always told me that G.M.C. stood for Good Man's Car!!!
Oil under coat the car inner and outer panels doors hood coil towers quarters once you fix the rust . Also drill 1/2. Inch holes in the pillars and rockers get some plastic 1/2 in plugs spray in oil there too and every used car line and internal boxed in unibody frame area . Oil annually wear an approved respirator and don’t get oil on engine exhaust or catalytic converter . If you have any rust on your oil pan sand it and prime and use a good rust paint . The transmission will last if you do an annual service . My 400800 km 2004 Grand Prix gets oil change and filter every 6000 km annually transmission service ,power steering service and brake fluid service .On the transmission it’s easy to suction out 4-5 litres out the dip stick tube and replace use the gm tape approved dextron 6 double check first .By only removing 4-5 litres you won’t shock the transmission like a flush might and the filter should be changed if you have no history of that being done . The suction removal works best if the transmission is warm , I keep my old fluid (don’t keep it if it’s dark or burnt smelling )to use for other lubing needs like putting on rusted nuts and bolts and door pins , linkages . Here’s a thought for you I redid my brakes front pads and hardware were $27.99 Canadian rear $17.99 and I replaced both rear rotors 29.95 each so my brake job cost me $110 Canadian +tax ,try that on a foreign car lolololo .
I also bought a 2008 Grand Prix with 130,000 and right off the bat I was surprised at the power it has. I had a 2006 BMW 330i and it feels the same way, but I do need to remove the 110 mph top out so I can bury the speedometer someday. It has the MONSOON sound system upgrade which sounded great, but I'm putting in Hertz PRO speakers to replace it. I got aftermarket rims that make the car pop, it's very clean inside including carpet. I stay on top of making it shine every day! Whenever someone gets inside they're like "nice car man!" because I also do Ubers in it. But I do also got the rust bubble problem on the back, I painted over it but I'm glad to know it's common. I did learn something new here I had no idea the front seat goes forward like that! I thought the latch took off the back plastic cover so I never touched it. 😂 Anyhow I am very happy with my purchase, I got it for 3,500 which was a steal so you got an even better deal as the car can sell between 5 to 7 according to KBB. I'll be keeping this car for a long time.
@@johnpadilla4661 Good deal. Used car prices are through the roof right now. My Grand Prix has 183k currently. Motor has been reliable! I have a slight coolant leak that appeared I need to get fix next week . Rust on rear fenders are common. Congratulations on the Grand Prix!!
GM W-body was a good platform. Structurally crash safe. Five years ago I looked for a GP for my son's first car in Western PA. Found it's cousin, a low mileage, loaded, Olds Intrigue GLS, with the same reliability, the 3.5 Shortstar is a beast. The parts you replaced are similar components, I've replaced, primarily due to age. Ours is rust-free; coming from NC. Don't know how your GP escaped rust in PA. Maybe it wasn't still long enough for rust to catch up. 👍🏽On your video & GP
Thanks for the great review! I have an 06 that has 150,000 Kms (I'm from Canada). I think the color is similar to yours. It still has the original stainless steel mufflers. I've had to replace brakes, rotors, coil packs, left front hub, right front ABS wire to harness, spark plugs ( the 3 rear ones were seized), spark plug wires, transmission cooling lines, fuel hoses and a section of fuel line under left passenger door area. Front rotors and pads were replaced twice in 2 years, they squeaked a lot, rear rotor and pads were also replaced but they make a loud humming noise when I back up. Once in a while I get a shudder or hard shift from first to second gear., happens after car is driven for 30 minutes. I experience this once a year. As far a I know, the transmission oil and filter have not been changed. My mechanic advises not to as it may cause further damage. Any thoughts?
Exhaust was my issue with the hard shifting from first to second. After New cat my car flys again and no more trans issue at all runs like brand new and I beat the bitch
If you in rust belt I highly recommend you oil under coat the car missing nothing annually .If oil undercoating is done correctly it will make the car last a very long time and any future mechanical issues will be worth while as to pouring money into a rusted chassis unibody
Bought one of these cars as a work vehicle to keep mileage down on my daily driver... bought it for $500 with 220K miles. I’ve replaced brakes all the way around, plugs and wires, the RF wheel hub (all either Dorman or ACDELCO parts). Changed the oil regularly and kept the fluids topped off well. Only thing left is the PS pump which leaks a little and for as little as it gives me problems, I’ll just keep an eye on it for now. I could probably “flip” it for something newer and less mileage, but I’ve grown to like the car a lot and it costs me $30 a month with gas and insurance. I can’t complain.
Hi Sid I own 2 a gxp and a 3.8 gt both had minor power steering leaks and I added Lucas power steering stop leak no leaks now on either . I have a 1976 corvette which had power steering leak it solved that also 20 years ago I added Lucas power steering stop leak the vette no leaks since
I have a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP which has 183,000 miles on it currently! I love it so much. I’m glad to see that if I continue to maintain it...it should hit 200,000++ The only “problem” I have currently is a belt tensioner. It is “bad” so the serpentine belt squeaks below 40 MPH but I LOVE MY CAR. It was my first ever purchase of my own...which felt really good. I was initially worried about replacing the stereo but it KICKS! LOVE my Pontiac ❤️
@@MechanicallyDeclined1 Not much, honestly. Just a serpentine belt, struts (they were bad when I bought the car) and recently tires!!! All of this has been over a span of three years!! The biggest “expense” is running high octane in it...but I knew of this Caveat when I bought it!! Runs like a beast!! Runs like a dream and has almost no issues!! No rust, no major fade on any of the window trims, seats are leather and good as new. No complaints!! Just hit 205,000 miles today and there’s more to go! I love it so much.
My 2005 had 199K on a still very peppy 3.8L engine when I finally had to get rid of it. I bought it in 2015 for 1400 bucks and had it for 2 years as my computer car. Engine and drive train were tip top and it had very very little rust despite being a Maine car. Needed 2000 bucks invested with new tires, ball joints, wheel bearings and a sway bar to get it stickered. I just couldn't sink the money into it so I sold it to a guy who used it for in a derby car at the local race track. Even in 2022, I'd own another one of those cars as a 3rd vehicle if I decide to have another vehicle on hand.
Got an 08 base model my wife had since 30k on it, it's about to roll over 200k. Been drove hard over back country roads daily it's been a champ. Only regular maintenance and had catalytic converters clog on it but that's it. This is the 5th or 6th gm 3.8 I've had and every single one has lasted to 300k. Only main complaint is intake gaskets, the stupid plastic coolant elbows and gm fuel pumps going out. Make sure to keep those fuel filters changed!
My coolant elbows were changed when I bought my 03 GT. They didn't do the intake gaskets though so I did. They've been doing great. When I put it back on, the right gasket got pinched and started leaking coolant, so I had to readjust. Been good since though. I'ma look where the fuel filter is so I can change that. I don't let it get under a quart of gas. Hopefully the fuel filter isn't in the fuel pump and is easy to access
My 2008 GP has 148,000. My goal is 300,000. Pretty sure it'll make it. I bought it five years ago and have put 50,000 on it. Only problem I've had was a bad coil pack . Fixed it my self. So easy too work on.
2005 Pontiac grand am with 208,000 miles on it 😁. Took it on an 11,000 miles USA Roadtrip last summer for 6 weeks / slept in the back with the seats down. Love this car, wish they were still around!! Hope mine lasts another 100k!
Oil under coat chassis and panels doors crossmembers pillars rockers quarters trunk hood and trunk deck coil towers . Touch up paint change fluids often keep an eye on water pump hoses belts . Easy service to suction transmission fluid warm out of trans dip stick tube annually 5-6 quarts . I use a hand operated suction pump $10.00 here in Canada and some plastic water line for ice makers you can get to bottom of transmission pan doing this it takes me 15 min to change and refill
I have a 2007 model with 165,000 miles on it and it is in really good shape considering I let my son drive it for a year..lol I need to replace the struts and tires, other than that it runs and drives great.
I got a 2008 Pontiac grand prix and I love it. It has 143000 miles but 2 year ago the transmission decided to blow up on me. And just now after 2 years I got a new transmission slapp in it and it runs like new It's a great well built car and I love my Pontiac
Have a 05 GTP. 252K runs great or did, currently stalls randomly during Sumer months but no codes to what is causing the stall, but not in winter, bought in 09 with 39K. This car rocks
Had a 2001 GTP, and I agree, the 3800 V6 is a rock solid engine! About to get a 2004 GTP COMP G next weekend with 93,000 miles on it in Georgia. Looking forward to having another GTP
I had a 3.8 in a 93 SSEi Bonneville that had 277K on it before I blew it up. (Supercharger was rattling so I got another one from a salvage yard. Slightly newer and slightly different housing apparently because the linkage caught on the body of the supercharger. Got stuck at recline. I couldn't kill the ignition since I was on the interstate and had to get it over. ) I like these, even lesser trims. If my current car croaks I would look for one of these. Especially a GXP)
I have a 08 V8 GXP and I love it. Replaced both wheel bearings thus fixing my abs issues. I cant figure out how to lower the backseat for my kayak tho lol. I can only lower the driver side rear passenger seat not the two on the passenger side. Help plz...
That's a sweet car! You should have a pull strap at the top outside edge on each side of the back seat unless it got ripped off or something but the seats are all the same so it should be there. Thanks for watching!
I found an 08 base model garage queen last year with almost no rust and only 48,0000 miles. So far it's been a terrific car, and what's even better is that since the W body had such a long run, there will still be cheap parts for these cars for another 10 years at least. I work at a GM dealership and we routinely see these in the shop with 250,000+ miles still running great. The mileage might not be spectacular, but cast iron engines have almost no problems and they'll probably never make them again.
334,700 on our 2007 base model and still runs and drives great. Bought as a GM certified used, off of a lease return in 2009 with 22,000 miles. Mobil1 ext perf oil w/filter changes every 8 ish thousand miles. Over the years it's been great to us. She's had 3 trans fluid/filter changes, changed trans line pressure solenoid, water pump, fuel evap vent sol several times, replaced coolant elbows, wheel bearings, front struts, tires, brakes. She now needs a new fuel line and mufflers.
The pressure solenoid was not working as it would kick in and out of lockup. Then had it replaced so it works properly again. She just turned 338,000 this morning, still going well.
Rip out the fabric insulation in the door jamb just behind the front wheels. They get soaked with water and salt and rot out the fenders. Also spray fluid film on the underside to prevent rust.
I'm lucky enough to own this exact model since new. Easily the best car I have ever owned. My car is much cleaner. I took note of how it runs so perfectly. Never a problem with it. Take pride it your ffs. Clean it! OMG the back seat. How can you stand it? OMG
I had a 2006 grand prix 6 cylinder 3.8l. The motor was like a T1000 terminator. Even if you had a check engine light, she was fine. Whole car and shocks were done but the body and motor was hard to kill. The butt of the car could fall off and I would still be cruising! 😅 Gosh I miss that car soooo much... compare to the newer models I owned Luxury isn't everything. Not one time owning the 2006. Did it ever cross my mind to have a newer model with specs and year. I didn't even have air conditioning the whole thing was kaput. Took a month of ppl saying "You do know you have air conditioning right? USE IT!!!!!😊
I purchased the '08 model new with the 3800. Changed the oil every 3500k miles. Flushed the trans every 50k miles. It's 15 years old with 230k miles. Engine and trans still run strong. However, I've replaced almost 75% of the car. Friends with Accords and Camrys with similar or more miles and less attention to maintenance haven't had to replace a 1/3 of what I've replaced. I will shop quality, not price next time.
Definitely an GT2 variant of the GT. My GT1 had cloth seats, non-heated. It didn't have dual-zone climate control either. The HUD also didn't come with my SE1.
Yoooo anyone know why his doesn’t have a supercharger? I have the 07 and it’s supercharged I bought it from the junkyard but might it have been swapped or do they just come with or without it from the factory?
Hoping to get one of these or its Chevy counterpart. Only have $480 to my name but hopefully I can earn enough soon. Much cooler first car than a Camry or Accord :)
Didn't have it that long. Made the mistake of changing the Trans fluid and replacing or cleaning the filer whatever the mechanic did) and the trans started to slip, sold it. @@TopLineRacer
My 2004 black Grand Prix GTP, Supercharged, comp G was totaled in a hit & run last Monday. Only 115,000 miles, no rust. Other than faded side mirrors and worn leather on the driver’s seat, she dang near looked new 😭 I was the only owner. I don’t want insurance money, I want my 20 yr old car back.
Oil change and filter using synthetic oil every 4500 miles , pump out transmission fluid from transmission dip stick tube annually and transmission filter every 3 years do not flush transmission only service by either dropping trans pan or suction out warm fluid threw dip stick tube and refill 5-6 litres
I just bought a 2004 supercharged with 124k it has some extra punch with the supercharger and I still get 24 mpg average. I’m a bigger guy and its very comfortable to drive, hopefully mine goes to 300k as well.
The normal aspirated 3.8 V6 are good, but if you are going for a GTP or GXP then you have a right to worry. The trans were not made for high performance.
After 140k miles I had to change the transmission lines. Mostly due to the car sitting out for 2 years and the lines rusted up and weren't performing anymore. Either way it works well now. The engine is still fine even after almost every part besides the engine rusted up lol
I'm offering $2500 to an 03 with 127,000 miles. Says it's in great mechanical shape. If h accepts offer, will go look. He had it listed for $3000. Is it worth it if he takes the offer? I'm hearing the 3.8 engines ar great and reliable. How about the transmissions? Need a reliable car for at least the next year or two.
@@TopLineRacer Aye man, coming back after a year of driving. It's been doing great after some DIY work I put into it. It began having hard shifts a couple months in, but I changed trans fluid, filter, and put the TransGo Shift Kit in. Did add some Lucas. Been 7000 miles ago, shifts smooth, no problems. I drive but not a ton. Changed intake & valve gaskets and coolant. Sitting at about 134k. Should've negotiated lower than $2500 tho. Quiet and smooth engine, almost too smooth makes me worry! I drove a 12 hour round trip for Christmas and an 8 hour round trip week before Thanksgiving. Gotta say, on the road it's a comfy ride. Cruise control works like a charm. Rides better than the 2017 Chevy Cruze my sister had. So far so good and looking to make a move to another city with it.
I agree. .. Also the model year. If it was an '08, or 07, that might be one thing . .. I'd try and get him down to a grand - Then I'd say what has it had done do it? Any transmission work? Has it had new ignition coils?
Man i miss my gp. I had a 2007 grand prix base. Even though it was the bsse model it was an amazing and beautiful car. I bought it for $10,300 with only 49k on it. I had it all blacked out with tint and got the windows, headlights and taillights tinted. I live in cincinnati I drove it to and back to Florida twice and got 530 miles on 1 tank of gas, drove to columbus and back numerous times. I got into a really bad accident in it luckily i wasn't hurt I spun out coming around a bend on the highway going 60 then my right rear tire blew and i went over a median and crashed into a guard rail on the other side of the road couldn't gain back control from the tire blow completely totaled crazy thibg is no airbag deploy but luckily i was wearing my seatbelt plus the big body of the car is what I think saved me if i was in a smaller car like a civic I'd pribably be dead. It had 112k on it when it was totaled I only had it for 4 yrs and never had a problem till that tire blow. If it was my choice id still be driving it'll be 12 yrs since that accident and man do i miss it.
Was just looking into them I have the same car buddy an color bought it with 120k on it did most of work on it myself not to bed of maintenance I have like 175k on it u was hoping to get to 250k for sure
That's killer iv had mine over 7.5 years done good still for the money spent about 8g on mine from dealer so do regular an little more advanced maintenance on it an it's doing pretty well
