Today we are modifying the expander ball in the Lee full-length resizing die. In the previous two videos we found that the Lee expander was too large, causing insufficient neck tension.

I know this video is kind of old and Johnny you probably don't see these comments anymore but I went ahead and ordered the Lee die set and the expander ball was at .306. Someone out there is listening to you man! Appreciate all that you do.

New to your channel when I bought a 300 blackout and was getting ready to reload for it. I never thought about the expander ball. I went through all my Lee dies and put them in the drill press and honed them all down to .306. Great info

When I want to polish a piece like this I chuck it up like you did. Then I take a Dremel tool with a rubber wheel and spin them in opposite directions. Keeps things smooth and round and its fairly quick. No reason for this to not work unless too much is taken off. good work.

Thanks man, I should have thought about polishing this part of my dies as well. Some are getting old, this can't hurt. Congrats on the deer and good luck on the elk!

@@JohnnysReloadingBench I was watching you polish the expander balls wondering, would roughing the inside of the case neck up with the rough expander ball be a bad thing?

Doing body work, this is all course. Fine grit for automotive is like 2500 grit. Cool video.

A bit late to the party, but thanks for the measurements and tips. I've got a Lee die coming, and first thing will be to spin the ball down in size. UPDATE Got the die, spun the ball down, and works great. Thanks for the tip!

Nice work Johnny! It is worth while to polish all your Lee expander pins even if you do not want to remove material. I usually use 300 to 600 grit with a little oil.

I polish all of my expanders and like at least 3 to 4 thousands smaller than the bullet diameter. I like just a little more neck tension. I use my drill press and not a drill. I also use wet or dry paper with some well used 400 grit as my last step for a bright fine finish.

I was having this same problem with the hornady dies in 300 blk bullet would jump .010 or more with the hornady dies every time use a lee crimp die no luck. polished the expander ball still no luck I seen your results on the forester die and bought one to no avail still had the same problem I was using sierra bullets and finally had enough and bought some 150 grain hornady interlocks and the problem stopped. I mention this because you first encountered the problem with sierra and this is what my problem was.

You could try to sand the base of the die to adjust the shoulder position. It would make a perfect custom case. I saw someone do that with a 6.5 creedmoor used to convert 308 brass.

Since the forest is Knurled I don't think you have to worry but for the others being polished too much you run the risk of vacuum sealing them inside of your dies haha. I haven't noticed any difference good or bad when I polished my Lee decapping die but I also don't reload as often as you.

Quit trying to polish like that. Use a 600 grit soft honing stone from Gesswein for material removal. Leave about 0.0003 on the diameter for polishing. Use #3 micron diamond compound with a popsicle stick to polish it. The trick is to actually have some area that does not polish out completely. This will allow somewhere for lube to cling to while sizing. The best case lube I have ever found is lanolin. Better yet, buy a set of Dillon carbide dies. They also have incremental sizes for the bushings so you can play with bullet retention. I worked on the bench as a tool and die maker before attending Clemson University, finishing with a BSMA and MSEE. There is actually a "mile long" formula that will calculate the interference required for press fits. It is not that hard to do. I have it in an HP calculator but also wrote it for MS Excel. If anyone wants is, let me know. You will also have to apply the Coef of friction and contact surface area to apply to the calculation. If there is too much interference, you will break down the structure of the brass case and that will be the failure limit where going any smaller will not help with the bullet retention. It is more simple to have about 0.001 interference and use a crimp to hold bullet position. More than 0.0015 is a risk for poor retention with variables due to wall thickness, make of the brass and tempering of the neck by using heat.

I wonder if polishing it was the wrong move to polish. The texture might have helped to hold the projectiles?

for these measurements you could really use a 1 inch micrometer. calipers don't work well for these measurements.

Have you tried any neck truing cutters? I haven't but maybe they'll help with accuracy. If your necks are all the same thickness all the way around it seems like it will make for more accuracy. This isn't really the video for that comment but I know you're still chasing that tiny group haha.

Yeah I say so, I was going to turning my firing pin on my AR chambered in 7.62x39 so I could hit steel cases hard enough to fire. But I decided just to get another firing pin.
