300 Win Mag load development with the Thompson Center Compass using the 220 gr Sierra Match King and Hodgdon Retumbo. Up to this point find a Low SD load has proved very difficult. We implement the Scot Satterlee load development data that we generated previously and use that information to choose our test loads in our journey to find a great load for our Thompson Center Compass. This was a $200 rifle that we are going to test to see how accurate it can be with a very budget setup. We load up SIG Brass with the Federal 215M Primers.

you have more patience than I. I'd have melted that rifle down and used it is a door stop by now.

I don't disagree but it gets better here shortly.

I did something similar with the Hodgdon load data. I did 67.7-72.5 grains of IMR-4831 on 190gr SMK and sent them 3200 fps. Found out they used 24" barrel and mine is 26" and I am at 4,300 ft altitude. Sierra manual says 65-72 max of 3000 fps using 26" barrel. Best group was lowest charge at 2835 avg. Everything else looked like I was trying to pattern a shotgun.

A few tips. Being a magnum, free recoil, with no forend control is always less accurate, especially in a fairly light rifle. I'd be highly dubious shooting groups with a magneto speed strapped to the barrel. Also, did you allow a good 10 minutes cooling between groups? Not a criticism, as such, more useful observations. Still, a nice presentation.

Not bad groups. You are definitely squeezing some decent accuracy out of an inexpensive rifle!

that's a long sweet spot from 76 to 76.9, I'm sure that 78.4 ish you could make a good one with more ump,but a 220 smk moving 2880ish is moving lol

Great video. What chronograph are you using? Thx

I use a magnetospeed chronograph.

You are using Retumbo which is a slower burning powder that creates faster velocities. Not sure about the pressure reads but if true you'll burn the throat out quickly. Also why are you measuring velocity again? You found the velocity node, so adjust seating depth to achieve best accuracy node. Take that damn chronograph off the barrel, as it affects harmonics and you can't get a true accuracy read.

Is there a way to get quick load in the U.S.?

Hi Derek, Yes. Just google quickload and you will find it. They mail it you on CD. If that isn't completely obvious google quickload and neconos and you will find it. it is about $153 US

RETUMBO, where did you find that stuff? Haven't seen that one for at least 2 years, anywhere. When you run low on this powder, then what? I guess start over with something that is consistently available.

I ran into a couple pounds at my local shop about a year and a half ago. (After I got into my last pound) and haven't seen it since. I am sure that eventually there will be more, people complained about no H4350 4 years ago and no the availability has been much better.

That chronograph is probably your biggest problem as it is on the barrel...

No pressure signs according to brass, but quick load says over pressure! You may never find the perfect combo when your trying to juggle your info. Real world results are always more accurate than computer generated numbers. That's my opinion
