I think a lot of people get really hung up on the fact that the .30-06 dwarfs the .308 in size, but they forget that: 1) the .308 was designed to be a small action round with large action power. 2) 2 world wars passed between the development of these rounds and the technology increased leaps and bounds.

The 180gr. was a round nose. The 150gr. Was a pointed soft point. That's why the shrapnel was poking all those small holes. Those two calibers are almost identical ballistic wise. They're both awesome calibers.
@robertcarey3383
@robertcarey3383 4 года назад
For those who didn't know it before the test learned that a spire point bullet will penetrate better than a soft point. Because 150 grain spire point ammo is available for both try testing them with the same type and weight ammo.

Ballistic coefficient measures a bullet’s ability to cut through the air - the higher the number, the less the wind resistance due to the shape of the bullet; hence, it’s ability to travel farther and retain more energy. Sectional Density is the measure to use when assessing a bullet’s ability to penetrate an animal. The higher the number, the greater the penetration. Great hunting bullets have a Sectional Density greater than .300; good hunting bullets have Sectional Densities in the neighborhood of .248-.299. The longer the bullet for a given caliber, the higher the Sectional Density. Longer means heavier. Heavier means the bullet can’t be propelled as fast. But again, the higher the SD the farther the bullet will penetrate once it hits the target. In other words - with bullets of identical construction and form factors a slow heavier bullet will penetrate farther than a fast lighter bullet. In this test the bullets were not of similar construction and their form factor (spire tip vs round nose) were very different. The spire point tip 150 grain bullet has a higher ballistic coefficient while the round nose 180 grain bullet has a higher sectional density. But the FORM FACTOR and internal construction of the bullets are so different that the test was kind of like comparing apple and oranges. Fun to watch but not really a valid test. One other thing to think about, however, is that meat damage with heavy slow bullets is typically a lot less than with faster lighter bullets. If hunting for meat is the goal, then use a heavy slow bullet. Anyhoo, an enjoyable video - as always!

Very well put. The reason I use 170 grain in my 30-30 is for sectional density. (and the proof up here is how they work compared to the 150s, on average, on deer) If I was using a high velocity round, I would chose the longest, heaviest bullet available to me. (if I did not have my woods gun) Unless i was shooting across valleys at pronghorn in big sky country of course. But most people today only talk velocity and energy. Then again, I suppose a lot of shooters today never hunted for meat on the table.

Do you think sectional density matters a whole lot on expanding bullets As far as damage and penetration within 300 yards for game animals?

The difference between 308 and 30-06 depends on the propellant used. If using faster burning rifle powders, the 308 and 30-06 are virtually the same when it comes to performance. The 30-06 will propel equal bullets faster when using slower burning powders because of the higher case capacity. The pressures for both cases are almost the same.

My great grandfather in New Brunswick, Canada, was a hunting guide for over 50 years. He only used a 30-30 Winchester lever. He joked that all the deer he shot with 30-30, were lined up head to tail would measure over 60 miles.

There is nothing wrong with the 30-30. Also the sks has about the same if not more range and punch. The sks box said All deer, Antalope and Black Bear. I had one. Still kick myself for selling it. I paid $100 for it still in the box. All gooped up from packaging. China.

Years ago when I was still hunting deer with a Remington model 788, .308 caliber I had a brochure comparing the trajectory of a .308 vs 30-06 caliber at 500 yards. The bullet drop of the .308 was approximately 8" more at that distance than the 30-06, with lower but similar foot pounds at that distance. I think this is why the military chose the M-14 (.308/7.62) as a replacement for the M-1 (30-06), as the former is shorter than the latter and that meant the shorter .308 round could load slightly faster than the longer 30-06 round.

Great expansion on both. I've found that with hunting ammo expansion is proportional to velocity. It could be that the velocity of the 30-06 was slower with the heavier bullet and therefore with a slower velocity penetrated less. That said, we didn't have a chronograph to check that.
@mothman-jz8ug

If using different bullets, it starts turning into apples and oranges. You had it right the first time. To compare the two cartridges, use same bullets. Too bad the 180 didn't have the same shape as the 150. The lighter and couple hundred fps slower went further due to bullet shape. The 180 expanded more, but the larger exposed lead nose would account for that.

With the same bullet weight my friend you're wrong. If you have the same grain bullet in the same shape bullet the hot 6 isn't dumping more energy on the cinder block at 20 yards. After 200 yd it's hard to tell the difference between the two. I love my hot sex and my 308 but the 308 is inherently more accurate and I've seen elk and moose dropping their tracks at 100 yards with a 308 at shop placement. The 30 ought six people make me laugh.

I've used both .308 & .30-06 for deer & elk. Either caliber, in any standard weight, will easily be enough for big game. Accuracy is the more important factor. With my .30-06, I used 150 grain because that's what my rifle & my shooting ability worked best with...downed many miles deer & Rocky Mountain Elk. The .308 shot better with a 168 grain. Point is, anything you want to hunt will drop with a 150 grain just as easily as a 180 or larger.

Sometimes the same bullet will penetrate less when loaded to faster velocity, because it expands faster. In this test, the .30-06 bullet had a large round nose that started drag before any expansion at all! Similar to the Woodleigh bullets I loaded for .338 Win Mag; lots of power but not all that much penetration. I set ten milk jugs like bowling pins, with a space between them equal to the size of a jug, to see if I could knock them all over. A .30-06 did slightly better in this test too! Both bullets made a huge mess of the milk cartons, but not all were knocked over!

My favorite, growing up in Montana (hunting deer and elk regularly) was the .308 -- mostly because that's what I had. When I was in Viet Nam, I noticed that the .308 equivalent (7.62) would drop a human equally well, which just reinforced my opinion about it being more than adequate for hunting game. Snipers preferred the 06, since they often shot their "targets" at a much farther distance. Since I rarely was lucky enough to hunt moose or bears, I didn't need the larger (and more powerful) 30-06. My brother had an 06, and it didn't bring down large game any better than my .308. The ammunition for the 06 was more expensive though...

Yes you’re absolutely correct the 308 will not shoot 180 grain bullet as fast as the 30 out six can shoot the 180 grain bullet The 30 odd six starts to shine at 180 grains in comparison with a 308 but the 308 is much better suited for < 168 Grains. With that being said this is the perfect match up I wish she would’ve used the same brand of ammunition and bullet type! Now I’m going to finish watching the video!

The neck of a 308 is a bit shorter which puts a limit on bullet length. The 06 had a longer neck which is conducive to longer bullet design Longer bullets have a better ballistic coefficient which is necessary for longer shots. Think of it this way:: if you had a rock and an arrow or spear that weighed the same and you threw them which would go further. A soft ball can be thrown about 300 ft. That's 30 yards. On the other hand a football can be thrown 70 yards. It in the shape of the projectiles.

Hello, thank for these experiments. They are very intriguing. Something to consider. If you were use a chronograph during your series testing to gather additional data, I believe you will come to more accurate conclusion. Finally, it would make the test even that much more accurate if you were to use the same type of ammunition. Thank you

I believe in this case the drag from the extra expansion of the 30-06 slowed it down faster than the 308. More power dump, but less penetration. It would be interesting to see to what extent the additional bullet weight influences the exiting velocity and ballistics of these rounds. Another point of interest would be ideal barrel length for each caliber to get the most boogie for your buck.

The only advantage to using the 30-06 is for the handloader. The 308 and 30-06 are both 30 Cal and you can handload anything in the 308 brass that you can load in the 308. The advantage is the larger brass holds more propellant.
@jimjohnson8864
@jimjohnson8864 4 года назад
Most really hot loads for 30-06 the case is less than half full and has the same weight of powder as 308 with the same muzzle velocity. It may surprise you that heavier projectiles use less powder and have higher chamber pressure than lighter projectiles. Hot loads are extremely inaccurate. An experience hand loader will get about the same performance from 308 and 30-06 at safe chamber pressure and with good accuracy.

His personal fav is the .30-06 A lot of the older Canucks still hunt with Lee Enfield .303 Mark IV !! The Canadian Rangers used the LE Mark IV until about 5 years ago ( Yukon / NWT ) because it stops everything and easy to clean in frigid Arctic winters. Keep shooting !

This is all about delivered energy. This test you can tweak to any result, by altering the different inputs. Bullet weight, speed, distance, bullet brand, etc etc. The 30-06 and .308W has a overlapping potential, but you can make the 30-06 shoot a little straighter, or use a heavier bullet, and thereby deliver more energy into the game. (Faster velocity does the same). Both are plenty good enough in most circumstances. You just need to know the limitation of your self and the gear. Most often the shooter is the real limit.
@sidekickbob7227
@sidekickbob7227 3 года назад
@s d That's a too generally claim, and I suspect it to be hard to back up. You can make the 308W go shitty, just as easy as the 30-06, if you play around with the load. My experience is that they both have way more than good enough precision for normal hunting and shooting. The rifle, the load of the cartridge, and the shooters skill, is way more important for accuracy than the shape and volume of the two cartridges.
@sidekickbob7227
@sidekickbob7227 3 года назад
@s d Those arguments will I not argue against. :-) Even the "perfect cartridge" in the "best" rifle, is inferior if it doesn't fit the shooter. If the "feel" of the rifle is wrong, then you are better off without it.

My hunting rifle is a 2006 Remington 700cdl. Went that way to honor the 100th anniversary of the cart, and my family has owned Remington firearms for over a century. Mine really likes Federal 180gr cheap ammo, shooting 2/3rds of a MOA out to about 330 yards (As far as the range in Fairbanks goes) For handloads, Sierra game king 168gr leaving the barrel at just under 3k fps seems to be its preferred pill. Forget the powder charge, unfortunately. Some of the 200 gr roundnose fire well out of it, but I've never found anything heavier that I was happy with. And being able to pick up a cheap box of federal and get sub MOA accuracy is just so nice. I do own a .308. Specifically I own a Saiga .308 with a 16.5" barrel. It eats anything I feed it, and turns heads at the range. :)

The .308 is under-rated as a large game round. It is best with the 165 / 168 gn Projectiles although I use 140gn SP for most of my hunting. Absolutely great medicine for even the large Reds. The relatively light recoil of the.308 compared to it's hitting power makes it easy to place shots for maximum effect.

“Or small game to if you wanted to.” I remember that Nosler 180GR Ballistic Tip at a rabbit... Never have I see guts and blood fly 15’ into the air before, that day I did. The 30.06 Springfield is my rifle, and slightly more versatile and more efficient with the heavier bullets. The .308 Winchester is a very efficient round though, cost effective, and adequate for large game, all while using less powder, producing less recoil and using a shorter action. Both are great!

I have to say, from what I understand between the two rounds not so much as different brands( though that could have factors in it) is that this test should be carried out at minimal distance of 100 yards. I think you would see different results. I myself prefer and hunt with the 7mm mag and why is just because I’m comfortable with it and it’s what works for me.
@christopherkingsland4604
@christopherkingsland4604 2 года назад
My comment is late, but here's my take. The 30-06 burst the first 3 jugs stronger than the 308. This was because the 30-06 mushroomed more (considerable more cross-section) and so passed its higher energy faster (pushing more water) resulting in a similar track length. Or in other words, the energy of the 30-06 is greater but its mushroomed drag is also greater. So a soft target would be more shredded by a 180g 30-06 than a 150g 308 at close range.

How is an identical grain bullet comparison "unfair?" I've hunted with both 308 and 30-06. Both did its job. I traded off the 308 for a Winchester 94 lever action 357. Kept the 30-06. Both are good hunting calibers and in my opinion, more gun than needed for whitetail. Also in my personal opinion, any 30 caliber rifle, within it's effective range, will take any game on the North American continent with the proper ammo and shot placement.

All of what you said is hard to argue with and is simple wisdom for hunters. The only thing I would add is it is never a bad thing to "overkill" so the .308 and 06 are dynamite for whitetails with any bullet of 125gr and above. And shot placement has always been and should always be our paramount concern as hunters.

Who te. The 308 was designed for the M 14 rifle and the M 60 machine guns for the army. Comparing the length of the cartridges you will notice that the 308 is shorter. That means a shorter bolt which travels a shorter distance between shots resulting in the gun being able to fire more rounds per minute. However, the volume of the 308 being shorter has almost the same volume for powder as the 30-06. Velocity of the 308 is just a bit less than the 06. If you look at bullet mfg ballistics you will see it isn't much. Because the body of the 308 is much fatter than the 308 bullet the neck has to have a sharper angle. The result is that this difference slows down the burning rate of the powder which enables all of the powder to be burned. That does not happen in the 06. This consistent burning rate of the 308 makes it more accurate than the 06. The 22-250 cartridge and the credmore cartridges also have similar construction. I had a 22-250 that put 3 rounds in the same hole at 100 yrs. For a while the 308 was used as a sniper cartridge in Afghanistan with confirmed kills beyond 1 000 yards. While it is true that you should use the same bullet weight your demonstration showed that both cartridges preformed very similar. A deer rifle bullet under best conditions should not leave the body of the game. Why. All bullets have Entergy. So if the bullet design enables all the energy it has to remain in the animal it will do more damage and the deer is not going anywhere. Conversely, a heavy bullet that goes right through the deer is not going to release all of its energy in the deer. The bullet is taking its energy with it when it leaves the deer's body. True story. I was getting a haircut and a 16 year old boy shot 2 ...8 point bucks with the same bullet. The 2 buck were running side by side and the bullet passed through the body of the closest deer into the second deer. Ironically both were shot through the heart. And the kid had pictures for proof. He used a 30-06 180 grain bullet. When I was 18 I listened to my peers who all used 270s. So I bought a 270. I have never had an exit wound with it. I use a 130 grain bullet at 3,400 feet per second as choreographed. That bullet explodes. In deer. Oh both cartridges use a bullet with the same diameter of .308 in. It would be interesting to view your results of your experiment using the same weight bullets. One last thing each manufacturer has patent on its bullet design and the performance will be different between companies. Try if you can to use bullets from the same company. Nice job.

30-06 shines in hand loads and is the most versatile round in existence. 180gr is too heavy for deer at most ranges and likely passed right through the deer without expanding, although this has a lot to do with bullet choice as well. I wouldn't and don't use anything heavier than 165gr bullets and have no issues.

@s d well I read a lot about the 270 from a guy who wrote for Outdoor Life. Jack O"Conner. He killed every animal in North America including all bears. I know for sure that the 270 is more accurate than the 06 and the 308 also is more accurate than the 06. Accuracy is helped along because of the difference of the difference in diameter of the cartridge body and the neck. Observe the 22-250. The 65 creedmore, the 308, the Remington and Winchester short 300 magnums. All have fat bodies and marrow necks. All are very accurate. One reason I like the 270 is the flat trajectory. 7mm Remington mag shoots a bit flatter and has a stronger recoil as well. 7mm mag is a good choice for western states. However, in partially wooded areas the 270 works well. I believe I mentioned that I never had an exit wound with a 270 on white tails using 130 grain bullet. For larger game 270 can be had with a 150 grain factory. And if you reload a 170 grain bullet is available. What I noticed is that basically the 270 out shines the 06 when using lighter bullets and the 06 is better with heavier bullets. Speed in ballistics means more energy when the bullet hits game. A huge.poimt One year when hunting whitetail with about 3 inches of snow on the ground a dear came across my line of sight. It was bounding and I took a shot as it leaped into the air. When I found the tracks in the snow I followed them and came to the spot where the deer made its last bound. Tracks disappeared. How could that be. Well I looked around and found the deer laying 9 feet away from where I shot it. You see, I hit the deer when it was in the air and it flew sideways 9 feet before it hit the ground. My friend, that is a lot of energy that caused the deer to fly sideways 9 feet. I was amazed. Now, I doubt it very much if an 06 or 308 could do the same. More than likely the bullet would have passed right through with out releasing all of its energy. Saw a film about a hunter who shot a bull moose with an 06 at 50 yards 5 times in the heart area. The moose just stood there and looked at him. He reloaded and fired the 6th round. Then the moose collapsed. I could see the hairs move on the moose. He had a great shot group using 180 grain bullet. 180 grain on an 06 is potent. You see the 270 is a very flat shooting cartridge..if zeroed in correctly the drop in flight might be 2 1/2 inches or so. Which means that I could sneak a bullet through s hole in the scrubs or branches of about 2 inches or less out to 250 yards. You would need a hard recoiling magnum to do that. So. Why suffer.

@@jmkhenka My dad was a sniper in WW II AND He had a special rifle and ammunition made especially for snipers. He said he could drive tracks with it. A military rifle is considered accurate if it has less than a 3 inch group at 100 yards. My m14 grouped 3 inches at 100 yards and I hit 20 for 20 at 500 meters. 540 yards. Sniper rifles had match grade barrels. Scopes were special and were programmed for specific amo. They could be adjusted way pass 1k yds. My buddy's m14 had a 1/2 inch group at 100 yards. Most of my shooting was less than 75 yards, so I was ok. So. Accuracy depends on the rifle. I met a guy at the range who bought a surplus M1 Garand 30-06. Unless you're into the recoil and macho bark of a 30-06, or are worried about being considered a pansy with the lighter rifle, you will love that round, and be pissed that you've hauled around too much gun for too many years. Try one. There are a lot of huge moose in Scandinavia who might have told you I'm giving good advice, but they can't 'cos they're dead from a dose of 6.5x55.

Duofold I agree. I haul around my Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55. It’s a heavy rifle but it’s a tack driver.

one shot each wouldnt be enough to see much of a difference. It looked like they both had about the same affect. What were the powder loads and fps?

I went from a 280 witch is close to a 7-mag to a custom made RUM with a sendero with muzzle-break barrel. Love it had way less deer loss in the woods with the .30vs7mm. Have had the gun 20+ year's. Don't hunt much anymore got old. Like to see the water jug test with a RUM!! The win mag is good but I think the RUM is a little more of a bad-ass!!
