@@BadMoonRising92 that might because he wasn't flashy... but all 80s team, all 90s team, 2 time defensive player of the year, 200 career sacks, 1st ballot hall of fame, 75th Anniversary team, 100th anniversary team, 13 time all pro, I feel like that's far from underrated lol
I had Bills season tickets for most of Bruce Smith's career. There's nothing like 75,000+ people chanting "BRUUUUUUUUCE!" at the same time. One awesome football player.
Bruce Smith is one of the top 10 players to ever play in the NFL without question. He also has the NFL record for most tackles by an edge rusher so you couldn’t run against him either.
@@whattheyourgae9627 I was a Bills fan at that time and very into football. There is no way in hell I would have taken Reggie White over Bruce because all he did was rush the passer. He had no where near the run stoppage as bruce
@@whattheyourgae9627 and yet he still got to 200. Dude was all around a beast, the Freak before they had one. He absolutely could take over games, you couldn't run or pass. He was a different kind of playmaker and if he played in any other market there wouldn't be a debate
@@elbowgang9715 that makes sense but still he should be at least top 10 or 15 u figure if each category of stats has a leader that person has to rank at top in NFL history.
Their is a misconception that White was better because it took him less games to get to 198 sacks. Bruce faced Dan Marino twice a year, a quarterback who had the quickess release in football and still sacked him 11 times over his career. I say, White never played in an 3-4 defense (with only 3 down lineman). White also had the benefit of playing next to 300 lb All-Pro Jerome Brown and always played in a 4-4 scheme. Players like Deacon Jones also benefited from playing with defensive line All Pros Olsen, Lundy and Grier known as the "Fearsome Foursome". In addition a chop block blew out Smith's knee in 1991 and he missed most of that season. He still came back from that injury to make 1st Team All Pro the next year.
That spin move was only done effectively by him and Dwight freeney. Everyone else who does it gets yelled at because most people do not understand when to use it.
It's not his fault that the Bills have no rings. That really should not mean anything. They should have beaten the Giants. Other than that, both the Cowboys and the Redskins were better teams.
Who do you want to bump? Walter Payton??!? Jerry Rice?!?! Joe Montana?!?!?! Lawrence Taylor?!! Jim Brown?!?! I'd love to know which player should be dropped to make room for him. Even if your talking top 20 your talking about guys like Ronnie Lott, Joe Greene, and Barry Sanders. thousands of people compiled this list. They know more about football than all the people commenting on where players belong. No one got robbed, #31 is the right spot.
Chris Johnson, I admire Bruce Smith too but let’s show Deacon Jones some love. From 1964-1968 Deacon Jones AVERAGED 20.5 sacks……during seasons that were only 14 games long. That’s 1.46 sacks per game. I think Bruce Smith is the all-time 3-4 RDE in NFL history but let’s show Deacon Jones some love.
Can you imagine a defensive line with Bruce on one end and Reggie on the other? They were only 2 years apart... no telling how many super bowls a team like that could have won.
The thing I still can't believe after watching the 30 for 30 on the Bills was how Hoschetdler from the Giants held onto that ball when Bruce sacked him in the endzone for a safety when it looked like in almost any case that would have been a fumble in the endzone. It's such a shame that I missed watching so many great football players before I really understood the game since I was born in 1991, so I didn't really know how good Bruce Smith, Reggie White, and Lawrence Taylor were until they were retired.
I was born in Jan of 87. Dude we still got to see all of the greats in all major sports while they were still very good. Gretzky lemueix messier bruuuce Montana in his later years, Deion elway Marino Jordan. Man I can keep going. We were born in a great time as well.
his spin was so effective because even though he is 6'4 he had a really low center of gravity. He could get tons of leverage and power from that spin, really hard to pin him down when doing that...good luck 6'6 300 pounders catching a whirling Bruce
So underrated and underappreciated in the grand scheme of things. There can be little doubt that he is on the exact same level as Lawrence Taylor or Reggie White
He should be? Who do you want to bump? Walter Payton??!? Jerry Rice?!?! Joe Montana?!?!?! Lawrence Taylor?!! Jim Brown?!?! I'd love to know which player should be dropped to make room for him. Really hard to move the players you mentioned back to move up Bruce. Maybe the only ones would be Greene and Deacon Jones. I know they were good but If I had a choice to build a defense around them or Bruce I'd take Bruce in a heart beat. The dude was an amazing athlete.
Dan Marino-0 SB wins, John Hannah-0, Barry Sanders-0, Anthony Munoz-0 and Deacon Jones-0. All those players are lower than Bruce on the list and maybe rightfully so. Does that make those players less great because they never won a Super Bowl? I'd argue Bruce was a more valuable player to his team than Marino was.
Number one overall pick in 1985 1990 Defensive Player of the year Tackled Hostetler for a Safety in SB25 Most sacks in league history And he’s Number 31?! He should’ve been higher on the list He’s top 20-25
Agree he's up there with Lawrence Taylor and Reggie White. Complete freak of nature that dominated, and his stats back that up. Smith was unstoppable in his prime.
Bruce Smith lives in my Hometown. I see him all the time. Such a down to Earth fellow. I never fan-boyed over him, I know how annoying that can be. I always respected him for what he contributed to football, and how he is in real life. Such a cool dude
Bruce Smith played defensive end for the Buffalo bills he wears number 78 he played from 1985 to 1999 he was born on 18th June 1963 he was born in Norfolk Virginia he played for the Virginia tech hokies football he wore number 78.
You're lying to yourself if you think there's 30 players better than him. Would be a $30M/yr player today and win DPOY award every year easily. I always thought he was somehow underrated and overlooked. This #31 ranking really solidifies that.
Havent seen the rest of the list cause im watching in order, but if theres any pass rusher other than LT (i know he was a LB) and Reggie White above him then #31 is a disgrace.
“Don’t depend on anyone else” a mindset so simple, yet absent in today’s NFL. they either blame, lie, beg, or exert their frustrations physically. Why? bad sportsmanship.
