Massively underrated, people sleep on this dude but he had some of the tightest grooves. No flash, no gimmicks, just rocksteady beats.

@@TameImpala521This is definitely true about the reggae sound but I don’t think Chad (drummer for 311) has his snares dropped from the bottom head. Lars Ulrich however that’s a different story (i.e. St Anger)😂😂😂 But here he’s definitely using a piccolo snare, which he pretty much used for the first four or five 311 albums. The piccolo sounds really tight and gives a really nice pop/crack sound that like you said accommodates for a reggae or funk style. A lot of bands were using these snares in the rap/nu metal genre like Korn. Definitely inspired me to use a piccolo as my primary snare. Sorry I wasn’t trying to correct you or anything I’m just a drummer and a music snob over here 😂😂😂cheers!

+degenerate More than i can recall, no shit. Because of the lyrics, I nicknamed them my "stars", so some songs that referenced that (which is a lot). 'Sweet', 'First Straw', and 'All Mixed Up' they loved. But, on Fridays, their treat was 'Down' because they'd sing at the top of their lungs and dance so hard they shook the portable their classroom was located in. (Please know that I held the remote so I could mute when needed.) I wanted them to read. Comic, lyrics, anything. And, 311 was their reward. What's crazy awesome is these kids are now in their early 20's and when I happen to see one of them, they always mention this. Thanks for asking me about it. Cool fucking memories.

I've seen 311 14 times, and I'm trying to remember if I went to a show and wasn't stoned....but I do remember at one of the concerts in Mobile, AL, a Mobile cop was working the security, and I was huffing on a fatty 420 my ex had, and right as I hit it, the cop walked up and was like "I have a good suspicion what that is you're smoking, but because I love 311 so much, I'm not going to make a scene here, but I will ask that you put that doobie out and put it in your pocket". He turned around and walked away and I was like :O LOL

most people don't realize how gansta 311 really is!

I know SA emphasizes the word "SHOT" so it's easy to misunderstand him as simply saying shot and that's it. In fact, I thought that when I first heard the song. But, it's a mid-sentence rhyme. He's saying "shot down by the kids", metaphorically speaking. As in, the kids won't like it because they will see your music is derivative and you won't be a popular or successful artist. Here's the whole verse for context: "A warning to the crews out there who think they're hot / if you're not original rockers, you will get shot - down by the kids / dissing your art, the stuff you did / eventually, it gets so bad, it puts you to bed / but when light flashes, sweet electricity / all the world is there revealed with the clarity / a raw voltage, briefly we see and the hope is / you'll be able to tell just what dope is". Now obviously in real life, this doesn't ring true. Plenty of derivative sounding bands have become popular: such as The Strokes and especially Greta Van Fleet. Before anyone cries foul, I'm not saying those are bad bands. They are good bands, but they are derivative of a style that has already been done before and in GVF's case, a direct copy/tribute that is almost indistinguishable from the original band. Yet, they are very popular. I think "Come Original" is more expressing their philosophy and flexing on their (at least at the time) original mix of styles.

Coming from a band that really sat in line with current trends.
