► FAQ
Q• Why do you speed up some of the footage in your videos?
A• We don't, we film it as time-lapse footage. We do not have the battery capacity or data storage to film in real time as our cruises can last up to 7 or 8 hours. We use to the time-lapse footage to help tell the story of movement rather than showcase the scenery. We limit the amount of time-lapse shots we use in each vlog.

Chocolate shops in York? Oh my goodness! Could that be the home of the York Peppermint Patty? :D
@MinimalList
@MinimalList 4 года назад
Hah, no, sadly (as I quite miss York Peppermint Patties)... the English city has a long and proud history with chocolate (it’s where both KitKat bars and the Terry’s Chocolate Orange are from), but the Peppermint Pattie originated with the York Cone Company of York, Pennsylvania. So they’re indirectly named after the English city that got its name from the Vikings, but I haven’t seen them for sale here outside of specialty places that deal in American sweets. M

Not sure where to put this so I will put it here. We really appreciated your 101's on Viruses and Vlog editing. (We now use the free 'Shotcut' to edit our cruising vids for elderly family to view now too old for the cut.) 101 request. Would you consider a vlog on boat maneuvering please. We get the sense that you almost always go astern into a mooring place and that you seem particularly successful at going astern in general. Any hints and tips would be gratefully received.
@MinimalList
@MinimalList 4 года назад
You’re absolutely welcome for the videos. The maneuvering video is a nice idea, however I’d feel a bit weird giving advice on reversing astern because your ability to do so well is REALLY dependent on your boat’s design. Ours has a particularly long swim at the stern, a bit of a mark of Liverpool Boats apparently, and the real secret of my ability to reverse so well, as all I really need to consider is the action of prop walk on my course... sadly the vast majority of narrowboats have a blunt stern or even a square stern, with virtually no swim below the waterline, so they’ll waddle all over the place and no tip I can provide would help. That said I’ll talk to Jo about the idea of a maneuvering video, though it would probably mainly end up being a plug for the courses offered by our friends at Willow Wren! M

There is that expression I stopped using after 9/11, "Next time", I never got to the 110:th floor of Twin Towers as I thought 12 Dollars was too much for another 8 floors after having come all the way to the very top of Empire State Building, I first visited NEW York in Novemeber 1999 and came back in February 2004 and then as we all know that sadly Twin Towers was history, with those words said I cross my fingers that you get back to "old" York and get to do River Fosse. I myself have decided to do all when being in a place the first time now not to stand there being baffled.
@MinimalList
@MinimalList 3 года назад
My general plan as well... in the case of the Fosse, after walking the navigable length, I’m comfortable with missing out if it for some reason becomes permanently blocked. I mean it’s a different way to see the back of a Tesco, but it’s not precisely a top of the world sort of view. M

If you don't work in a shop or in the support services to shops, then there's very little left. Only non shop employments is the likes of being a plumber or an electrician. If you're "health challenged" there's very little opportunity for production work anymore.

Yeah, sadly factory work is kind of gone everywhere, a long, long path towards the inevitable consequence of generations of governments focusing on short term solutions like lowering taxes instead of education spending. Couple that with completely underestimating China and India and the loss of those jobs actually should have looked like a foregone conclusion. Woot! May not be quit right, doing this from memory, but... "Ask a fish head anything you want to, they won't answer they can't talk! Fish heads, Fish heads, Rolypoly fish heads, fish heads fish heads eat them up YUM!" I'm sure that was from my misspent youth and Dr. Demento. Also, bonus TMBG. Thanks for sharing another video; loved the footage of the sections of city wall. For somewhat obvious reasons, we don't have anything like that in the midwest, so it's amazing to see the parapets, crenelations, and the corner towers just leading down to an active sidewalk. Can't wait until we can make it over again and head up to York. Passports made it here, so if we get a change of administration and some folks who'll support doing meaningful response to and eventual recovery from the Pandemic, maybe we can come sometime in 2021. So overdue already. Stay safe, enjoy the cruising, and hopefully George got some nice running once out of town and somewhere quieter.

@@MinimalList We'd planned to renew our passports in early spring, as they were coming due, then we delayed that a bit in the early days of our lockdowns, but once it became obvious this was not going to be handled in any rational way, we said "Hell with it" and got new pictures, filled out the paperwork, and sent it off, knowing that the passport offices had literally millions of passports backlogged, and of course the USPS is undergoing it's own attack from within, but eventually we got everything (passports, passport cards, and all of our original documents). No one will let us come there (sensibly, sadly, since they can't know if or how careful we're being personally and they have to look at the US numbers and shake their heads and say 'Sorry, but...') but hopefully there'll be some light at the end of this tunnel. Maybe at that point we can come and visit some of the many tunnels there *grin*
@MinimalList

All I can say is that it’s good to have those passports in hand... cause right now the only obvious light is still quite possibly a train. Here’s hoping it’s just the end of the tunnel... at least we’ll find out, one way or the other, soon. Just wish it didn’t depend on so many people who don’t seem to grasp that when faced with a choice between two evils you REALLY shouldn’t choose the obviously worse one. M

Question: In watching everyone's narrow boat videos I noticed that there are a lot of derelict boats. I know that some of them are "Hermit" boats but does the Canal and River Trust clean the abandoned boats from their canals? I know that it would be expensive to tow and impound a narrow boat but if they impounded them for a month and then sold them for 2000 pounds. Just a thought.
@MinimalList
@MinimalList 4 года назад
They do remove boats that become an actual impediment to navigation (those that sink, for instance), but there’s quite a lot of complexity in seizing personal property, and a lot of expense in working it through the courts, so it’s really quite rare. M

Feeling very odd watching you both in the sunshine while Storm Ellen batters the house and howls down the chimney. Must put York on my list. Thanks you for sharing your journey. Hope the storm is not causing you any problems. Take care.

We’ve been lucky and largely (but not entirely) kept dry! M

That one with big side paddle is I think an old sailing bardge from London. Southend. The Norfolk Broads. Well one of them I am sure.

Thanks for the video! York looks pretty nice! BTW, in the Patreon list there are two Mark & Angies listed. What makes them so special?!

Sounds like York might make a good winter mooring, what with all the things to see and do. Faust by Christmas or bust!!
@MinimalList
@MinimalList 4 года назад
It certainly might, however the Ouse at York is quite prone to winter floods, which can arrive very quickly, so I’d take that into consideration before heading up there in the cold! M

Loved your trip to York, great memories for me walking the Wall, the River Ouse and staying near the Wall on my trip from NZ.

When you visit York Minster there's no mistaking who had all the money in those days.
@MinimalList
@MinimalList 4 года назад
True, though I’ve got to say that compared to what people with all the money build these days, it’s pretty amazing! M

Isn't there a speed limit on canals and rivers?
@MinimalList
@MinimalList 4 года назад
On canals the limit is 4MPH over ground, rivers vary greatly, as in practice it’s up to the current / tides. M

At 2:00 into the vid, is that a real cat sitting on that narrow ledge?
@danensis
@danensis 4 года назад
Probably not. A few years ago there was a sculpture project to put cats all over York. There's one on a rooftop near Ouse Bridge, and another climbing a wall opposite O'Neill's on Low Ousegate.

I can confirm that was a ceramic cat, though it took a few moments of staring at it to be sure. M
