RECORDED ON FEBRUARY 3rd, 2020.
Dr. Dick Swaab is an internationally renowned researcher in neuroscience, who received numerous awards and published over 540 scientific papers. He earned his medical and doctoral degrees at the University of Amsterdam and served as director of the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience for 27 years. In 1985, Professor Swaab founded the Netherlands Brain Bank, which supplies the international research community with clinical and neuropathological brain tissue. Dr. Swaab is Emeritus Professor at the University of Amsterdam and Professor at Zhejiang University, Hang Zhou, China since 2007. His major research interest focusses on brain development, sexual differentiation, Alzheimer’s disease, the neurobiological basis of depression and eating disorders. In 2008, professor Swaab received the Academy medal for his significant role in national and international neuroscience. He is the author of the two volume monograph The Human Hypothalamus, which appeared in the Handbook of Clinical Neurology series, and of the Dutch bestseller We are our Brains, which is translated in German, Chinese and Italian.
In this episode, we focus on the development of gender identity and sexual orientation. First, we talk about sexually dimorphic areas in the human brain, animal models, and the factors behind their development. We then focus on the already identified areas of the brain associated with gender identity and sexual orientation. We talk about the “mosaic” hypothesis of the human brain, and also about gender dysphoria, and how we can better help trans people.
Time Links:
01:36 Are there any well-established sexually dimorphic areas in the human brain?
04:30 The factors and stages of development where these areas develop
11:03 Are gender identity and sexual orientation innate?
13:09 Sexual differentiation in the genitals is independent from what happens in the brain
14:50 Sex hormones behind sexual differentiation
17:07 What can we learn from intersex conditions?
18:01 Areas of the brain associated with gender identity and sexual orientation
24:36 The variability in gender identity and sexual orientation
27:48 About gender dysphoria
29:06 Is there a typical male and female brain? And the “mosaic” hypothesis.
31:31 Can children correctly identify their gender identity?
33:17 How to properly deal with trans children
35:34 Can we help trans people by learning more about brain sexual differentiation?
41:47 Why are there more male-to-female than female-to-male transsexuals?

Fascinating as always. I think this is one of your best, Dissenter. Thx to Prof. Swaab. He's a classic, his "brand" is PubMed. That's Boss on a higher level. No twatter, no faceplant, no social (disease) media: Just "Pubmed" and his 17 language translated books. A+ D.A., J.D., NYC attorney/writer

I've read that studies that suggest trans people have brains that correspond with their preferred sex identity are confounded by same-sex attraction, self-perception dysmorphias, preexisting hormone therapy, and/or undefined terms (e.g., what is the distinction between (1) females who like "manly" things but don't identity as transmen and (2) females who identify as transmen because they like "manly" things?). The phenomena of people who identity as nonbinary, gender-fluid, agender, male/female at different times of the day, along with anorexia and body integrity identity disorder may be evidence that the trans-brain hypothesis is confounded by other forms of self-perception dysmorphias and undefined terms/concepts as I mentioned earlier. Would a male who claims to be agender and happens to have some "brain parts" of a female be misidentifying himself given that he should be identifying as a transwoman according to the trans-brain hypothesis? Moreover, how do proponents of the mosaic-brain theory reconcile ideas of a "female" and "male" brain? Here's a RU-vid video of a relatively in-depth critique of trans-brain studies: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ToTLj56JQY4.html

A person may not know the nuts and bolts of their own biology which would correlate to the findings of the study and try to justify their existence by saying things like “I like manly things”. This doesn’t dismiss the study but exposes the individuals lack of education about their own condition. They do often say “I don’t know why, I just feel that way”. but you also have to be aware that a human is a psychosocial being and susceptible to conforming to social constructs or expectations as to what role a man/woman performs in order to be accepted in society. The underlying biology suggests these individuals are not male or female but somewhere on a spectrum between. There is no social construct appropriately reflecting that biology so they are identifying with and conforming to whatever role closest fits the brains biology. There seems to be a problem at the moment where younger people are being influenced and identifying with ‘trans’ because of the attempt to normalise it so that it is safe for them in society. The kids are going through a turbulent time of maturation and self differentiation and because they are navigating feelings of not belonging they see ‘trans’ and think maybe they are one of those. This is a separate issue to the genuine condition and we shouldn’t dismiss either. We can propose two opposing hypothesis and notice that both may actually be true. Thanks for posting the link. I like to see a few perspectives cause it can help point to something a bit more accurately.

Dr. Swaab makes it clear how sexual orientation and gender identity is already installed in our brains before birth. And thus why it is short-sighted to discriminate or judge these aspects of human diversity.

Curious if there are things the woman during birth may be doing or not doing causing things to happen unfavorably where identity doesn't match for newborn.
@deajar-davidlazer8678
@deajar-davidlazer8678 Год назад
The woman’s not necessarily doing anything but there’s speculation that exposure to ingested, environmental chemicals maybe interrupting her own hormonal balance. Another factor maybe stress. The foetus gender development is not the only thing that is being affected. There are many anomaly’s. There has been an observation in sperm decline and also testosterone interruption in both men and women in the past 50 years. Everything we do that pollutes and goes out of balance with our environment reflects back on us as a species naturally because we are intrinsically linked with it. Even though the exact causation for the condition isn’t known it is a safe bet to say all developmental anomaly’s are a reaction to environment, lifestyle, diet and even genetic ‘chance’. It’s not beyond probability that some instances are chance mutations.

i dont get why people talk about gender and shit. Like You either got xy,xx or xxy. Who cares about the rest. You arent born with an identiy. You arent born with prefrence. Its something that will imerge. Thats my best guess. I dont think it could happen otherwise. Why care about being male or female. I just wanna frick with things that attract me. And i dont care what they are when it comes to sex.

Sexual biology has way more factors than xx, xy , xxy. Humans are predominantly psychosocial beings so their neurology and resulting psychology will override their genitals. It’s important to know about this because it suggests that human sexual biology is a spectrum not a rigid binary. Our previous understanding of sex would appear to have been incorrect.
@moriahmars1462
@moriahmars1462 Год назад
People talk about gender identity because it's a neurological phenomenon that somehow got politicized. Chromosomes, although they somewhat affect the formation of whether or not you feel male, they aren't the main driving force to why people feel comfortable socializing and/or sitting alone as the gender they're currently labeled. Dick Swaab's work shows that the brain and genitals differentiate in sex independently in two different trimesters of pregnancy. Gender identity is proven as a mental sex dimorphism by the neuron production in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis. Those with a male gender identity very reliably grow twice as much neurons as those with a female gender identity regardless of hormone replacement. Brains and bodies are complicated, and sometimes they don't match up with each other. It's similar to how most peoples' hands inherently have different levels of coordination, hence left and righthandedness. The brain doesn't match up with the body.

I’ve no idea where that is now but I will post if I come across it again. I’d love if someone did a more recent interview into how the hypothesis was formed before he did the research. I vaguely remember it being about Alzheimer’s research as he was searching through the brain tissues and noticed it. Sorry I couldn’t be more help but I’ll keep an eye out for it.
