Dr. J. Michael Bailey is an American psychologist, behavioral geneticist, and professor at Northwestern University. His interests include sexual orientation, gender nonconformity, sexual arousal, behavior genetics, and evolutionary psychology. He maintains that sexual orientation is heavily influenced by biology and male homosexuality is most likely inborn. Dr. Bailey wrote The Man Who Would Be Queen, a book intended to explain the biology of male sexual orientation and gender to a general audience, focusing on gender nonconforming boys, gay men and male-to-female transsexuals.
In this episode, we talk about sexual orientation, sexual arousal, gender identity, and transsexualism. We start with sexual orientation, the different kinds out there, if it is inborn, and if we have already been able to identify brain areas or genes associated with it. We discuss sexual arousal, what is it, how it is measured, and femininity-masculinity. We also mention the fraternal birth order effect in homosexuality. This was an excellent presentation which brought me up to the current state of the science related to sexual orientation and gender. in the traditional conceptualization of gender dysphoria, boys who wanted to change to the other gender, often felt most alienated from their penis, because they felt like they shouldn’t have it, that it was an appendage that they didn’t want, and when they went for the transition, they went full on with the surgery to remove it. We have many transsexuals nowadays who have no interest in removing their penis, which to me seems very strange because they’re not interested in really becoming the opposite gender- they’re keeping The most obvious part of the male gender, modifying The rest of their bodies to look female. In fact in the original description of clinical cases,like Christine Jorgensen, diagnostic criteria included an extreme sense of alienation,shame and discomfort with having a penis as a main criteria in gender dysphoria.I think some of the things he’s describing here aren’t gender identity or sexual orientation, but really sexual fetishes, like men who are turned on with an image of themselves as female, that literally get sexually excited by putting female clothes on- that’s very different than a boy who feels unhappy as a boy and wants to be a girl. Just as a man who’s attracted to transgendered women who keep their penises,there’s a subgroup of men who are attracted to women who take male hormones and work out and get big muscles and their clitoris gets extra large there are men that are turned onto that sort of half man half woman presentation. These perversions are a lot more fetishistic, meeting the criteria of a sexual disorder, than actually resembling the traditional ways that we describe sexual orientation or transsexuality. One reason that transexuals don’t have the surgery to remove their penis, besides the cost of it, is if they are in the sex industry, they get more money for keeping their penis, so there’s even an economic incentive which has nothing to do with their own sense of self or their identity. it’s now a marketing thing like an actress might modify her body to get better roles, that’s what’s disconcerting to me. It’s become Cosmetic Surgery really.

*Great podcast, great guest, and great questions* This is completely off topic, but I find it really interesting how the Portuguese accent sounds so much like a Russian/Slavic accent. Many people say that Slavic languages sound Portuguese to them. I also find it interesting how the Brazilian accent and the Portuguese one are so different

Bailey, along with Blanchard have been very unpopular with some elements of the Trans community. Listening to both of them however, I find their delivery to be non- derogatory, moderate and professional. as would be expected from a serious scientific researcher. Such terms as Autogynephilia however, have been adopted by certain media pundits as an attack weapon against men who fit within the parameters of the description. Such terms as Narcissistic or non genuine are often added to worsen the attack. Perhaps the reason for the pushback from trans folk is due , in part , to this attack. Given that those who have managed to throw off the shame, derision and violence that has been meted out to them and of those they have seen around them, perhaps they resist being attacked with the words from such people as Bailey? Also, given the evidence that sexual orientation is innate and birth order appears to be a factor in homosexual individuals, why do some people and institutions and Political movements continue to attack individuals for what is not their own " fault"? Is being a Christian a choice? is being a bigot a choice. is being an arsehole a choice? or are they born that way? Perhaps if more in our society had the attitude that ' oh that person is gay, trans, AGP, Bi, gender fluid...so what??" we would not have the turmoil, hate and division that we see growing around us? This latter is the REAL threat to our society, NOT the 1-4% of queer people among us!

I discovered the reason for this. Such bigots have a slow or restricted sexual style and they believe they cannot reproduce or protect their family if they dont control the rest of us who might have a less restricted style. They think we are a threat that must be destroyed, they will unalive us or exile us or submit us to torture of various kinds to reform or convert us when given enough power to do so. Its all about what they believe is their gene survival. But because its some kind of primative response sometimes they attack people who might not actually be any threat to them and their lifestyle. Its very interesting.

I think language is all about politics. Nowadays pedophilia is considered a sexual disorder but it's actually sexual orientation. When admitting this once doesn't necessarily support it, in fact, i oppose it totally but I think that pedophiles deserve to have access to free mental healthcare.

35:23 “someone who has changed their s*” - this is what I find perplexing, why do professionals use this language? They changed their s* presentation, isn’t that the case? if it is impossible to change one’s s*, I wish the language would be more clear & accurate - it’s confusing enough as it is lol

A couple of factors. One is that there are multiple ways (degrees to which) these people transition. They may socially transition, medically transition or surgically transition. The other factor is that Dr Bailey has stated in other interviews that he agrees (because it is a fact) that trans women are not women, he will use langue to refer to them that is respectful (ie calling them by the pronoun of the transitioned gender).

@@lemonz1769 There is something very disrespectful about lying and unethical about encouraging a mental delusion. The West is in the confusing, chaotic & crisis position it is in today because it has thrown away the boundaries of deviant or abnormal behaviour by attempting to normalise it eg pedos trying to normalise intimate relations with children in order to satisfy their own innate s.deviancy and trying to lighten the language and stigma by calling themselves 'minor attracted persons' (MAPS). They are pedos and deviants.
