I like these double deadbolts because when they are locked they can not be shimmed or jimmied open.
I believe it's important to feature locks like this because almost every home uses at least one form of this lock.
Please do NOT use anything I show here for illegal reasons.

Every state has their own codes, but where I live, it's illegal to use this on an apartment, or house you are renting out for that fire safety reason. however, if I live in the home, I can have them for my own use, as I accept the risk. The other good thing about this type of lock, is if a burglar breaks a window and climbs in when you're not home, they can't carry your big screen tv out the front door, they can only take what they can fit through the hole they made to get in.

TheKeymaster1053 Outstanding feedback. Yes, while some may see a drawback on this type of lock, I love it because when it’s locked, it’s locked. Thank you for the info. 👌

Great info Albert. No restrictions on using double deadbolts down here. I have one, a Lockwood 355 that interlocks instead of a bolt. I have side glass panels so decided to use a double deadbolt to prevent a hand through the glass and opening the door. Also my lock is Jimmy proof as it interlocks into the jamb lock housing. Take care up there brother.👌🍺😎🇦🇺

Outstanding !!! Yes, what you have is excellent. That type could not even be separated from the jamb with a spreader device. Thanks Don. And so far so good out here. Stay well

Great video. I would love to get a set of deadbolt locks like that for my new house. Like you said that would be a problem if u need to get out of the house in a hurry trying to find the keys with one eye open at 3am. Have a great day

Thanks Mike, yes, in a panic fumbling for keys is not cool. Just something to consider

Here in the Netherlands it's very rare to have thumb turns. There are often many double locks on one door (pin tumbler in combination with one or two cross locks). Yep, you need to know where the key is but in many emergencies I can imagine I would exit through a window. Breaking or normal open. A chair or whatever will do that from any room. Still a valid point people overlook. Another advantage of double locks: a thumb turn doesn't stop a small child from running into the street. Anyway, plenty to think about. 👍

I am with you there, I think in a real emergency I could put a hole in something really fast. I just hope it helps people think twice when choosing a door lock. Knowledge is power. Stay well and Thank you for the feedback

Nicely picked. “When they’re locked, they’re locked.” The reason that they’re prohibited on both residential and business egress doors. Reference International Residential Code R311.12 & International Building Code 1010.1.9. With certain specific exceptions.

Thank you, excellent info. I know featuring locks like this is not the most popular thing to do but lets face it, we all use something of this sort every single day. I feel its important. I sure appreciate the feedback. Just not easy financially to feature them often.

I'm pretty sure that there are laws about where a double cylinder can be used or maybe a requirement to leave the key in the keyway (thereby allowing various attacks on the key). I almost think that there would need to be a route of egress that wouldn't require a key, perhaps defeating the advantage of the double cylinder door. I've only heard of Gate House locks once before and I don't think is was in a favorable. Thanks for the show.

Dusty N Windy on a business yes, but not on your house. This is a residential door lock. Scary thought isn’t it.

I reckon the only reason you’d use this would be if there was glass side panels beside the door or a window in the door, no?
@AlbertLebel
@AlbertLebel 3 года назад
John Smith yes, and it’s a residential lock. May not be legal in some states on rentals due to fire code but a home owner can use it. I bought it recently from a Lowe’s. A large home improvement store.

Great video Al, I’ve had one of these I’ve been meaning to put on my front door for a while now. Was figuring I’d literally tape the key to the wall nearby to make the location of the key very obvious but it’s still hard to imagine what lighting and emotional state would be during an emergency. As always, security and convenience are a spectrum, there are no absolutes. Thanks for sharing this 😊

Thank you, great feedback. Your spot on, theres no way to know what sort of panic we would have during a true emergency. It's fascinating to read all the comments on such a lock. Goes to show how serious we should take our choice of door locks per application, location and codes

I've been to several homes where these have been installed, and a lot of the homeowners store the key IN THE LOCK. Easy to find in an emergency... :-O
@AlbertLebel
@AlbertLebel 3 года назад
Ah yes, I could see that so long as it can not be reached through a broken window or something like that otherwise a thumb turn would suffice

Very useful information, when I fit Euro cylinders to front doors in the UK I always recommend a thumb turn cylinder for a speedy exit, you’d be surprise how may people don’t think about an exit rout in the event of a fire. thanks Thansk for sharing 👍👍👍👍

No one has really mentioned why you'd need a double sided deadbolt. The only time you would use one of these is if the door has glass in it where someone could break it and reach in to unlock. The same holds true it the door has side lights (glass panels on ether side of the door) for the same reason.
@AlbertLebel

Gantry excellent point. This would eliminate any such access. Great feedback Gantry, Thank you.

Gatehouse uses kw cores and I've never seen one with security pins. But youre right. And in some places Insurance won't pay if a person died in a fire or other incident where the deceased couldn't escape due to a double cylinder mortise lock

DJ 234 Thanks DJ, I agree. I love this double deadbolt type but as I mentioned an emergency passage must be thought of also. Perhaps a key hanger near the door but far enough to protect it from reach through a broken window etc.

I need to make a housing like that. Is it harder to pick when keyway are strait vertical? And everything is at a less Comfy handle?
@AlbertLebel
@AlbertLebel 3 года назад
Lock oLot I think so. IMO it’s often easier to pick locks we hold in hand not only due to comfort but you get feedback from both hands. A mounted lock is rigid so your main feedback is only through the pick and tension tool. Example; when I hold a padlock to pick it, if it has serrated pins, I can feel them “click” through the body of lock.
