33's vs. 31's: Here's What I've Noticed

In this video I want to share the differences I've noticed since upgrading to 285/75 tyres, or 33's as they are widely known. Bigger tyres, especially mud terrains, provide that extra bit of capability on the tracks, in the dunes, or even on the road. They make for a safer, lower-maintenance road experience. I'm here to share my experience of the ups and downs of bigger tyres. After running 265/75 (31s) tyres my whole life, there are some noticeable differences!

Great summary and information on the difference between tire sizes. I think a lot of people don't think about the end result and only think about how it looks on the truck. It's great to see that you've put thought into the before and after. Keep up the great work!

Great video, well done. Going from 35s to 33s also has its benefits (returns lost torque/power, provides less bounce, enhances control of the vehicle on and off-road, creates a better "planted" vehicle all round). A good quality 33" tyre, like Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ P3, compared to the cheaper Mud Trac Maxtrek 35s, provides the same ground clearance, possibly due to the better load rating, higher psi and stronger side-wall.

Unless you are going over boulders there is 0 need for 35's, 35's are not even that much more helpful in mud vs 33's other than adding weight.

More likely to crack a cv or brake an axle with greater turning torque pressure because of the larger radius from the axle. Saw a guy easily brake a rear axle on a tree root because he had 37's.

You aren't getting 40 to 50mm lift from these tires, the difference in diameter of the 285/75--16 is only 30mm more than the 265/75-16. So you gain about 15mm in ground clearance, that's all.

You've actually came up with the same conclusions I have, although I found a 9% difference in my speedo, which actually made my speedo accurate according to my GPS. I own a 62 series, went from 31AT to 33MT, so if I calculate the km/L and keep that 9% in mind there is very little difference, yes, it's slightly more. I have been on long outback trips and tracks, other than that it's a daily driver. What I did find is the steering needs better dampening, more weight I presume, other than that just a slight lift and other positives. Tyre wear doesn't seem to be a problem either, not much more at all if any.

I have changed the Land Cruiser to 35/12,5/16 but its only useful if you are moving in hard off-roading ! Higher fuel consume and a need of a very powerful engine is the consequence! But the performance in hard off roading is extremely better then before! The comfort is ok, also its not more noisy! The car is still stabil on road driving! I've got a gen2 Hilux and the amount of hassle I need to go through to fit 33's (body lift, diff drop, sway bar drop, steering column fix, bumpers brackets, certification, panhard rod, tyres + wheels, re-gear diff?) to gain 1" extra in clearance... I just don't think is worth it. I decided to install Spartan lockers front and rear instead. It cost me half price of what would've cost me to fit the bigger tyres and the truck is bloody capable. I decided to stay with the 265/75/16 vs going with the 285 simply because it’s really not that much of a difference and the 265’s are definitely lighter, better mpg and more accurate speedometer. The 265 is technically a lot closer to 32” with a diameter of 31.7” on the ko2. So in my opinion, the small gain really isn’t worth it, especially in my daily driver. A 265/75/16 is more closer to a 32 inch tyre (31.6" to be exact) and a 285/75/16 is almost a 33inch tyre (32.8" to be exact) - so the gain in height is only 15mm gain in height. Also a lot of modern cars have an fudge factor built in from the factory when it comes to the speedo reading (ie: your speed reading may say you are doing 100kph but actually if u look on the GPS u may find u are only doing 95 or 97kph) but the Trip meter may be reading the correct distance (ie: they work independently of other). So to get a true and correct reading u need to reset your vehicle's Trip Meter to "0" and then zero your GPS Trip Meter to "0" and then go for a drive on a reasonably "flat" road for at least 10kms or more and then compare the differences. This will give u a true and accurate comparison between the 2 different tyres.

You covered the change in acceleration when turning the bigger tyres and thus a taller gear, but a pity you missed the other side of the coin, in braking and stopping distances to pull up those bigger, heavier wheels/tyres. A missed opportunity to measure that, before and after. A spin off from this, is that the insurance company might want to know you have altered from manufacturers tyre specs, and might need confirmation of the new load and speed ratings are equal to or better than stock.

@@WillsLandcruiser that would explain it. not too familiar with cruisers, is that a 1kz non turbo? how are they to drive. Also you multiply by 100 because its l/100km. doesnt matter where you multiply it it works out the same. otherwise you will work out L/km

Host doesn't mention the correct tire size, only says: 265/75 or 285/75. Correct tire sizes, for example: 265/75/R16, 17 or 18. That does not help the DIYer when researching tire sizes. Otherwise, great video. Ty.

@@Tangaroa775 huntaways are incredible smart genes! Our paddock dog will steer the mob of sheep based on which way the ute is facing. Probably my favourite breed of dog. They’re just a little docile in the yards sometimes
