If you are about to have a Periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) for Hip Dysplasia, here are 35 things I wish I knew before I had my surgery!
Some of these are small, some are minor… but they are all things I learned the hard way, or wasn’t fully prepared for after my surgery! I hope to help some of you be better prepared when it’s your turn!

I had a full hip replacement on my right hip. I too was not prepared for the pain. I am 65 and was blindsided by the pain and recovery time. Most of the advice you have given is also applicable to hip replacement. Thank you so much for your video.🇨🇦❤️

4 days past pao and lebrum correction. Holy fuck. I have huge 60x40cm fullcolours tattoos on my ribs and this was very very painful. Yet the intensity of PAO recovery is on another level. Completely overwhelmed how heavy it is. It's burning hot 35°C and no air in the Hospital room. The Hospital is Specialized on the surgery but still this is crazy. I am able to walk around on my crutches. But how the Freak am I able to get Back in bed without Help. I can feel everything in my legs perfectly since day 2. Wow, the docotors were super happy with the surgery and how it went. They said it looked picture perfect - nothing went bad whatsoever. Just heard about the nerve damage you went through. The bladder catheter, the redons, and the pain pump(IDD) are gone today. Freedome yet more and more pain. Nobody in Hospital has even time to wash my Hair. The Hospital is quite.a ride from Home (best hosptial for the surgery in the Country) Oh my... I am melting in pain, sweat, desperation. Pls help me bare this pain. My fucking back hurts like a motherfucker.

The rollercoaster that is PAO! A perfect depiction! I hated it when they took out the catheter and then drip! The nerve pain is something else isn’t it. How good all your feeling came back! Hope you’re getting better every day!

@@SamanthaRoseKing a few days have passed and I can get out of bed and use the regular toilet without further Problems. Went from 6x 10mg oxycodon per day down to just 2. My pain is so much better from the point on I moved around a lot on my crutches. I'm even fit enough to leave Hospital early. Today I'm learning to use stairs and that's that. 2 days were Nightmareish pain where I regret the OP Every Second. Now this level of pain hasn't been reached again. Days are super fine. Nights are still annoying as fuck. Indeed. A freaking Rollercoaster If i ever saw one..

I just had my secound PAO corrective surgery end of March of this year. Also had the screws removed from the opposite hip that was also done. Im two months into my surgery and already walking

Thanks so much for this. I just found out I have hip dysplasia and it came as a huge shock; going in for a routine docs appointment and being told you need life-changing surgery with a huge recovery time is intense!!! This has really helped.

My mom’s name is Mandy and I also had this PAO! It was the worst pain I have EVER been through. My mom helped me the most she could but please please do not take any of her harsh comments personally. I made some comments because of pain/recovery and feeling like I wasn’t healing fast enough but I truly didn’t mean them, I was just mad at myself mostly. I wish your daughter the best, and you too!

Thanks for doing theses videos!I’ve been thinking about doing one on my PAO surgery,I had a horrible out come which left me with permanent drop foot and nerve damage. Dr don’t really tell you about bad things that could happen but it did save my hip! But caused a lot of emotional damage. Which also led to me getting my R hip replacement because of fear of another pao surgery. Also had complications from pain meds that led me to stay a few more day in the hospital.

Thank you so much for making this video. I'm considering PAO and am completely terrified of the recovery so this was helpful to feel more prepared. How long in total did it take for you to be back to full functioning (or at least as functional as you were pre-surgery)? My doc said 3 months but that seems fast. I paint murals and need to plan how long until I can climb ladders/scaffolding, stand for long periods, squat, etc. Again thanks so much for this video!

Glad to help! It is all so worth though it once you come out the other side! I just released a video of my experience in hospital up to 6 months ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Adko2z_Oufk.html ), and I have another one coming that marks my 3 year anniversary! I would say I was back to 'full functioning' maybe between the 4-5 month mark. I had a stinted recovery though as it was in the midst of covid lockdowns. But I was able to scale the attic ladder in my home a few weeks after I ditched the crutches... which was at around the 3 month mark. Sorry I can't be more specific, as it was 3 years ago I am struggling to remember! Standing for long periods was certainly a lot more manageable as well as squatting after 4-5 months.

Thanks for sharing I have had two arthroscopes and that was pretty horrible didn't help with the pain infact I'm now in even more pain after those surgeries.. I may have to have a PAO because they've just found I've got hip dysplasia so thanks for sharing. I've got a few of the things you've listed but some I'll definitely be getting, thanks for the heads up. I'm from Melbourne and I think I'm going to have it done in a public hospial but we shall see.

I’m 17 I just had mine done about 3 weeks ago and I was in the hospital for I think 2 days and besides the third night when the nerve block fell off i really haven’t had much pain biggest thing is I can’t do anything so I’m very bored. Is it normal to recover pain wise that fast? I was off of pain meds about a week in

It's been for me since 2017. My thigh is still numb and hypersensitive. I still have drop foot an my toes are still curled down. I have sharp stabbing pain that continues to go down my thigh, leg to my toe . I wasnever told any of this could happen after Pao with arthroscopic combination surgery. I'm going in for my 3rd hip surgery in a few weeks because again, I have a labral tear. So I'm thankful that all this happened to someone else because my neurologist at mayo clinic said all this pain is in my head and doesn't happen with this surgery. Ha

@@SamanthaRoseKing hi Samantha. I just had surgery again for another labrum tear. They said from mucoid degeneration from a PAO surgery. I was dx with CRPs, and I'm having flareups of that again. However, I'm able to manage my pain better . I need a hip replacement. And I also need a labrum repair in the left hip now. Thankyou for asking.

Thanks for the video! Why did you finally make the decision to get PAO? What was your life like before? I got diagnosed this week with hip dysplasia. I've had issues with my hips, knees, and lower back since i was 18, but I'm not in pain daily. More like discomfort. Also I can't sit too much, or do certain sports, or stand too much😅 unsure if i should do it now cause like i said I'm not in pain, it's mote just annoying and I'm limited.

Thanks for watching! Long winded answer incoming!!! I had an almost sudden onset of pain in my hip that just kept getting worse (I originally thought it was a strained hip flexor!) I sort of explain this part in my most recent video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Adko2z_Oufk.html), but after being made to wait 12 months (during covid) to have my surgery after I had been diagnosed and made the decision to hae a PAO, (I had already put off doing something about my hip for about 18 months prior - mainly because I couldn't afford the doctor/physio fees) the pain was getting worse. By the time I was almost due to have my surgery, the pain had gotten so bad that I couldn't walk for longer than 7 or 8 minutes before I had to start limping/hobbling! It was also affecting my sleep, and I had pain in my knee (secondary pain/swelling), and also pain in my lower back... So it was really affecting my quality of life! I also had a tear in the lining of my hip socket, and had lost a great deal of cartilage so I really didn't see any other option! Sitting and standing too long gave me similar issues. But since having PAO I still suffer from some discomfort (say at the end of the day after a lot of walking or sitting at a desk), but everything else has improved out of sight. Like life changing improvement! I also spent most of my life - the best part of 30 ish years (give or take) without any symptoms or knowing remotely that I had an irregular hip joint! It certainly helped to finally get a diagnosis. But also made a bit of sense - I could finally attribute my hip clicking to something!!! If you aren't in any ot a lot of persistent pain, you might not see as greater result as me... my surgeon reminded me that it's still not a normal hip joint. Yes they made it better and reduced my pain by 95% (or more some days) it's still not a normal joint. After 3 years I still get a bit niggly and achey at the end of the day. My hip still pops. It still aches a bit if I walk 'too much' (like 10,000 steps or more per day consistently) BUT it was SO worth it for me that I wouldn't change a thing. Not for any money. :)

Samantha, I am an anesthesiologist who does the anesthetics for these PAO surgeries at my facility. I am so glad you shared these points. May I ask what technique was utilized to try and help you in the initial recovery phase? We are now using a specialty catheter in the groin that instills numbing medicine for several days. That seems to be working really well.

That sounds fascinating! So would that lessen the need for medication through a drip? Or just supplement it? I am publishing a new PAO video on Sunday, so keep an eye on that one - I might answer your question in that video - it's one of two new videos and this one is all about my surgery/initial recovery up to about 6 months post. I also have one coming out for my 3 years post.

Are you able to share a rough cost value of the upfront hospital/surgeon/anaeth etc side of things? Eg >$5000 or something like that? It’s the latest thing I’m freaking out on

The fee for the surgery will probably depend on the surgeon, and also if they are through a private hospital or not. My medical fees (including referrals, consults, aftercare medicine, equipment for recovery) came to just under $9k after Medicare refunds. Inside that amount, Anaeth was around $3k with $500 Medicare refund, surgery was somewhere between $7.5-8k with a refund of around $2.2k, and the hospital excess was $500. I will do a video for this but I haven’t had the time as yet! Thanks for watching, hope you got some good tips!!!

Hello I came across your video, I’m in need of motivation and things to make life easier. I 20 yo f just had the Pao and laberal surgery about 2 weeks ago. I ended up having nerve damage or stressed nerves after it. I can’t feel my foot and no feeling below the right hip. The pain standing up is so painful, I have a time limit before I start breaking down in tears so rushing to the bathroom is crutches it’s just the cherry of my day. I found your video very helpful and made my husband buy most of it on Amazon. 🫶🏼

Oh wow... I hope you are doing ok? Any progress? I remember being at that point like it was yesterday. The nerve pain is next level...Every day gets better. I still have some numbness in my leg, but it steadily reduced in size over time. It's ok to break down though, you have been through a lot, voluntarily! I hope those things help you!
