This video was made for the enthusiast and or hobbyist. The engine is a 1993 light duty 350 (5.7) TBI (Throttle Body Injection) , it is not 34 years old as initially stated in the video , it was checked after I published the video. There is a couple minutes loss of sound at approx 1hour 6 minute mark and a song from 1:10:10 to 1:13:30 ( I apologize) to cover another copyrighted song as I had the radio on and picked up some Copyrighted Content ( song's )by mistake. I did try several times to remove the songs with no luck.

Pulled the exact same engine out of my 90 C2500. Crank had so much end play the counter balances were eating into the caps and block and ruined a flex plate. Couple of the bearings were starting to 'blue' from heat, but never spun one, had almost no cross hatch in the cylinders, less then normal ridge ring for having 300,000 miles on it, always fired right up, used 1 quart of oil between the 3000 mile oil changes, but was down to 13 mpg which was why I pulled it to give it a good look through. Got the truck used and drove it and maintained it for 5 years before yanking the engine. Even when they're 'bad' they're still good.

I’m a Chevy and square body guy . The engines and mechanical side of things i have never really known . One thing I’ve noticed while watching you do this. You’re observing it by its markings and features and addressing its history and Authenticism . As a firearms guy . I’m down with that and I’m going to learn about engines . Thank you for your video

@UCKgaCSZ5MWpUVv-2NdcxVqg yes...., "brother man."🤔 I've been there, done that...... The anticipation has to, SUCK, dingle berries, like sand through, CONCRETE! What sucks about the, "waiting game" is that it is the, SAME, For this engine as the last one, as well as the next, one! The only thing that sucks worse is the FIRST, initial, "start up", when you/eye am as nervous as a dog schitting a, peach seed. When you KNOW that it only takes 1 bolt, rod cap, main cap, oil pump bolt, either totally, forgotten about, or improperly, torqued, & it's back to squar...... nevermind Gear heads know the, drill... hahaha... hehe. 😉✌❤💯 Good ol', "NEGATIVE Nancy doesnt get entertained by, me, my friend, ...... phuck that cunt! "L👁👁KING 4WARD to a ride along vidya, soon, brother. My comment has accidentally run like, diahreaa, "Again", THANK YOU, DEARLY, for your time boiz & goiylz!! "IF YOU'RE STILL WIMME? @Clay Green Doing the same thing with my 93 K1500. I have redone most of the interior.. My new 40-20-40 front seat will be here in May and then it's just little odds and ends to finish up the inside (glove box door, new map/dome light assembly, color matched sun visors, etc.. Just took the 350 short block to the machine shop yesterday to get cleaned, machined, new pistons if they decide to bore it out (355) new cam/main bearings, threaded oil galley plugs, new freeze plugs, and they're gonna pop in my new cam and timing set for me. Final setup will be: 350 or 355 with 906/062 iron vortec heads, 2.02"intake/1.60"exhaust. Comp Cams XE256H flat tappet: .449/.456 lift, 212/218 duration (@ .05) 112° LSA Long tube headers, GM performance TBI Vortec intake, gonna keep the factory throttle body but rebuild it with new injectors and a 13lb regulator spring. Probably other shit I'm gonna do but I'm off to a great start. I love these 90s GM pickups.

Very impressed with your attention to detail, the way you show how everything is taken a part, what to look for.I have never taken an engine apart. I have been debating on pulling my engine from my project 1987 Chevy K10. After watching your video ( going to watch more of your videos) I am going to attempt it. I thought you did a wonderful job showing the in’s & out’s of a tear down on that motor you used ! I’m a retIered wrench myself and I stumbled on to your video and got stuck watching the whole thing. One thing that I especially liked is you very smoothly drove home the good practice of ( NOT using the shaft of your 3 lb. hammer or the likes of a 1/2”or 3/4” breaker bar into a intake runner of the int. Manifold to jar that loose

I have a 1991 Chevy C1500 with the 350 and with 310,700 miles. Never opened up, same oil pressure from when I bought it back in 1998 with 93,000 miles. Never been opened up, still original in the heads and rotating assembly. Still only burns not even half a quart of oil to 3,000 miles. The 90s 350s certainly were well built and durable as long as you took good care of them.

@@jaysgarage3616 Eventually, when the engine starts getting weak, I intend to do a mild build on it with a mild cam and bore it out a little seeing the 700R4 tranny has already been rebuilt with a stage 1 B&M shift kit and can handle the extra power.

If you're looking for a proper way to do this this is the video best I've seen on RU-vid. Almost like watching my father do it. We always took a very long 3/16 drill and oversized the top oil galley hole above the camshaft. This holds more oil at the top of the motor. Then we tap out both sides of this plug and put a pipet plug with red thread lock tight. We also put a high volume high pressure oil pump on or we convert these by stretching the relief spring in the oil pump.

Those TBI engines can make decent power with nothing but a cam swap , we did one with what they call a TBI power cam from Engine Tech and it made 320 hp which it good for a TBI 5.7. Really good video.
@jaysgarage3616
@jaysgarage3616 3 года назад
Thanks for the comment , I will look that cam up. We will be debating cams when we reassemble this TBI engine which is currently at the machine shop.
@bondpit8750
@bondpit8750 2 года назад
A cam swap for an additional 130 hp? I’m calling BS. The primitive, by today’s standards, ECM on these engines, (350 L05) severely limit what you can do and still have the engine properly function. The cam you refer to has to be able to work as a whole within the limits of the ECM. While I’m not familiar with Engine Tech, or the specs of the cam you mention, there are several well known cam grinders that have an “RV” cam that is designed to work with the existing limits of the ECM, TBI, heads, and C.R. of the 350 L05. By itself, the cam might be good for maybe 30hp tops.
@SaneCayne
@SaneCayne Год назад
@@bondpit8750 I'm trying to do this very thing: eek as much HP as I can from my original TBI 5.7 while not upsetting the stock ECM on my 1987 Chevy Silverado. Unlike the 727 block in this video, my 5.7 TBI block is "roller-ready". So I was planning to put the newer (90-96ish?) L31 truck roller cam in it. But leave most everything else alone. Do you think I can get 25-35hp just from the cam swap and still keep my stock ECM happy?
@boharris8179
@boharris8179 3 года назад
The actual stamping on the water pump boss passenger side would tell you more than the casting numbers you reference in the beginning. Those bearings looked typical for an engine that sat that long. I didn't see copper on any of em. A couple old straight plug boots go a long way when your messing with rod/piston removal/installation to not gouge the crank.

You should be able to install a roller cam and roller lifters for reliability. I installed a retro roller cam in the 350 of my '73 Nova. Check around to see the parts needed for your block.

Thank you for responding back with my question with gasket missing between the throttle body and intake. My other question is what could be causing my truck sometimes bog down when I push down the paddle to give it gas Could the missing gasket from my first question causing it or could the catalytic converter be causing it to bog down like it's not getting enough fuel I've changed fuel pump, filter and everything I could think of relating to fuel

love your video! I am hoping to get your opinion on something. I have a chevy 350 that I want to freshen up without machining. I specifically want to replace the main and rod bearings to increase engine longevity. So regarding the rod bearings, can I just replace them, do the clearance checks, and retorque them without having to change the rod bolts/nuts? Its just a stock, average HP late 70' engine that is just a daily driver. Thoughts on this?

Subscribed. I have a 727 non-roller engine that came out of my 92, was wondering how you plan to remove those lifters that are slightly mushroomed at the bottom. Is there room in the cam tunnel to drop them out the bottom? This is a spare engine as I went back in with a 638 block roller setup. I’d like to see what I can do with it so I can have an engine more or less ready to go for a near-future project.

Hi Robert , There is room to push the lifters out the cam tunnel , all 16 from this engine went out that way. Thanks for the question!

I have a 93 5.7L 350, i want a 355ci build with high torque.. 5.7L is in a 4x4 93. The idea is too to rebuild the motor to 355 specs, swap rear inards and make it an awd truck. Lot more complicated but its what i want at the end of the day

Kind of liked the music actually. Mind you I was a rave kid in the late 80s and 90s, and still hit the festivals every summer. In this video the music is such a complete out-of-the-blue surprize that it made me laugh out loud. Also, its a good video, the only thing I would change is that the engine should not have the balancer face the camera, turn it away at a 45 degree angle so we can see what you'redoing.

i have a 92 chevy Silverado. that has the cooling connection at the passenger side on the intake of a tbi that the threads are gone can they be retreaded?
@ypcomchic

You should use a separate piece of cardboard for bolts etc for each part tbi, pulleys etc. if you throw them all in one bucket chances are you will forget what goes where.

i just had my 350 5.7 rebuild from the crank on up..about 3 months ago..and its blowing blue smoke out the pipes i got about 2000 miles on it now and im using quart of oil about 250 miles i pulled the plugs out and #7 has lot of oil on ,that spark plug on the threads only..tell me what you think
@jaysgarage3616
@jaysgarage3616 3 года назад
Do you have a valve cover leak or any sign of a leak that would go toward that plug? If the oil is on the threads only it's a leak If not it is likely carbon deposits Were the heads rebuilt? when does it smoke? If it smokes at start up its usually valve guides and seals. What rings did you use? Does it run well other than this? To check rings do you have access to a leak down tester? I can only make suggestions but this is a start. Good luck and keep us updated.

It typically would not , a spun cam bearing maybe but not common in a 4.3.

Mr Jay, one of my buddies gave me a 350 out of a 92 chevy k1500 i was wondering what would be a good rebuild kit to use? all the ones i see on the internet are stage 2 or 3 i want a stock one
@jaysgarage3616
@jaysgarage3616 2 года назад
I usually don't buy kits , if you know someone who has an Engine tech account they offer a stock kit. I usually have the machine shop supply pistons and bearings and I buy everything else from Rock Auto. Not sure this helped much but it's what I do here in Canada. We will be starting to video the assembly soon , I will list the parts as we are going and where they came from.

You should fill the cooling system with water to make sure the block is not cracked.

47:22 is the 727 block one of those 2 or 4 bolt main casting , you don't know what you got till you drop the pan or was it a 2 bolt only block ?
@jaysgarage3616
@jaysgarage3616 2 года назад
That's right , you can have either a 2 or 4 bolt with the 727 block , you would need to verify by dropping the pan.

You need a cam bearing removal / installation tool to press / tap them out , and then re-install.
