The second week of April 2022 was a real busy one! Pretty much 5 round trips a day from our materials yard to our gravel pit and back. I ran our Superliner for 4 days and back in the W900 on Friday.
i have driven just about every truck there is there aint nothing like the look and feel of a superliner if it had an e9 it would be perfect but you cant beat the old mechanical engines and longevity of the old macks those trucks were meant to last forever the kenworth is nice but after 5 years it will be falling apart
I love the look of the Kenworth and I had a Kenworth of my own It was a very good truck but I just think the new stuff has so much plastic in it and even the quality of the metal they build the frames with now aren't what they used to be I just can't see them lasting long with all those electronics and cheap plastic parts it's really a shame what a new truck cause my boss ordered a new western start tri-axle and it caused over $250,000 and we could spend $30,000 on an old Mack and it would do the same job and make us money instead of costing a bunch of money
My great uncle has a Mack Superliner as a heavy duty tow truck, then he had added a Peterbuilt rotator, then a Mack R flat bed, then a Freightliner. He was going to teach me how to drive truck and get my CDL but he pass away before I was 18 unfortunately.
Stone age from the frame rail's up. Totally badass,,indestructible from the frame rails down. I drove a Mack transfer unit 350hp with an 8 speed with a deep reduction. A 15 speed would've been better, but the engine pulled really well. Surprising actually. There was a hill, Altamont pass, I'd been driving a Pete with a brand new out of the crate 3406B. It pulled the hill Westbound at 40 mph. This Mack pulled at 36-37 mph at 80,000 lbs. My hot rod '65 Pete model 281 (had Rockwell SQ-100 3.70 gear's with a 12513. A Cummins hot rodded so far beyond insane, and design parameters, pulled that hill at 55 mph with 6 K-rail. 6 K-rail weigh 48,000 to 50,000 lbs. Either side. Or, 51,000 lbs of asphalt shingles. Everything else I hauled was light.
@@unclealansyard5176 There's a guy with a small window Peterbilt that's got a Mack V-8 in it. Hot rodded. These engines will go 1,000hp, and not even sweat. 1693TA Cat, too. C-15, and 16 too. Can squeeze 1,000 hp out of an NTC Cummins without much trouble.

Just Purchase a 1985 Mack Superliner RW713 WITH that V8 AND I put in a new Super 10Speed it used to have a 15 Speed but that Transmission was destroyed and the Super 10 works Great just put in some LED Headlights and Fog Lights and got Dayton Spokes Tires
Our just restored 83 R model,it has the same powertrain. But the deal reduction is on a second stick, not a switch. Heimlich won't work the R model,but I'll bring it to shows. Especially the gear jammer show. And as far as the mack,,'s. Yes their Volvo own,before that it was Renault. Mack was always owned by someone else. Kenworth, Peterbilt are in the same family. And with the MX engine, a European design engine. International is particularly owned by Volkswagen. Freightliner, Western Star are part of Daimler. So I'm ok with a outside ownership.
Then I sold my Mack and bought a 85 auto car tri axle had for about 6 months and ended up having a bad injector sold it and lost a lot of money ended up buying a 78 Mack 10 wheeler with only 100,000 miles truck had 58 rears truck was really nice
I cut my teeth on Mack’s and never looked back I’m a Mack freak I drive a 88 R model 285 with a 12spd ain’t nothing like a 12 spd that kenworth is in the shop again ?????? Stick with the Super Dog Mike
Love that Mack no def no electronics on the motor she just gets the job done what a beauty. That Mack pinnacle is a beauty to I love that style of Mack always looks good
Happy Easter Mike! Very cool video, I like the in-cab shots. Our old 12 spds had a separate stick for lo-lo. I usually only used it on the jobsite but I was never grossing 99,000. We could almost feel the difference in acceleration between the Mack and the KW. I've gone back to work a little bit, sometimes in an R Model...good times! (just an 8 spd tho) This thing is an ex-snow plow truck, weird combination. Rears are on air but the front springs are HUGE...so my knee is always hitting the heater box as the truck beats me up😂

If I had one at work, you'd never get me out of that Superliner. Currently trying to get from a 2014 Peterbilt 367 into a 1997 KW T800, but they might not decide to fix it. At one job, we used to have an '83 Mack R, and drivers used to fight over who got to drive it for the day.
Mack’s definitely have dominated the Northeast when it comes to construction and or dirt hauling. Definitely built tough. I learned on a R model with a two stick 6 speed back in the late 80’s and early 90’s. I much rather drive a Pete now though. It’s just a style and comfort thing though. Also love a CAT when it comes to power. I haven’t driven a new Cummins or Paccar so I don’t really have an honest opinion on them yet. Never was a fan of Detroits either. I’ve never been an owner operator so I don’t have an honest opinion on cost of running to profit made on anything either. If I was an owner operator I might be partial to Detroit’s on account of their fuel mileage benefits.
Pop got a new 1986 superliner Mack with 350 9 speed we used it for years and years hauling logs.. was a great truck I drove it a little but I mostly worked in the woods running a skidder or really whatever needed doing..lol

Mack was the premier truck, you got your money's worth and then some with those trucks. And they are easy to work on, you can get to everything without taking the whole damn truck apart
Be lucky it's an old Mack We bought 3 2016s new. Over 5 years they had more vertical miles than horizontal miles from being in the shop every other week

@@TheBostonTrucker actually i meant the other 2 gears ( deep reduction) wich are activated by the switch in the dash the tranny itself has 10 gears if counted correctly.. and the switch im the dash has the other 2... happy easter sunday from.puerto rico
Hi Boston trucker , I used to drive an ERF (British Truck sadly no more ) with a 12 speed Eaton twin splitter gearbox with an m11 Cummins what a gearbox very similar to the Mack your driving , by the way brilliant you tube channel 🏴👌
Love the old Mack! The engine sounds a lot like an old Scania 6-cyl and the gear box is similar too, a 5 speed with hi/lo-split. I read that Scania helped Mack develope their direct injection engines in the 50´s. In return Scania got a licence to copy Macks buses too sell in Sweden. Kind of cool that you still can see some similarities 30 years later.
Really enjoyed this video. Nice Superliner. Slick looking trailer too. Used to a Superliner just like that, in the 80's. Thoroughly enjoyed the 12 speed. Used to use 3rd and 4th reverse at an outback concrete plant at a minesite where Cat dump trucks and 988 end loaders would be working as well. Roadtrain rated (2 trailers) truck with lower ratio diff gears than this one here would have.
@@christianmendez8299 paccar bought out foden and DAF as well, tbh on our normal roads it's bad enough driving our short cab over's. there are a few heavy recovery firms here that have KW and international loan star wreckers. other wise most US trucks here are show trucks not working.

Had a Eaton fuller13 speed direct drive transmission...it was in a gas truck( 427 with oil breather) tandem 1977 GMC 5 ton .had to shift all the gears, no splitting ie 3 in low..5 at intermediate and top 5 were in direct.
Nothing like the growling sound of a Mack !!! Your either a MACK man or you ain't !!! I've drove several of em and I loved em. Nothing like a good running old dog !!! Superpooch.
Like #934. Uhh....I love the whine of the transmission. Brings me back to my youth when i drove a Rd600 w/a 350 anda 2 stick. Mack engines pull hard in hills.
Hi mike, I am 13 and know I am far off from getting my CDL, I was wondering if someday you could make a video going over some tips and tricks that you may have learned over the years as well as any tips for driving a manual as am going to be learning on a 94 Mack CH600 dump with an Eaton 10 speed transmutation. thought you would be the right person to ask and I would be glad to be getting advice from a fellow masshole!
Hey guys listen I realize I'm not a Big truck mechanic but why would you wanna drop both your agitts on the shop floor busting your hump to muscle a Big radiator in place when you should be using an overhead crane type Gantry ?
I drove a 1986 R model for a nursey in Lexington. The truck had a mack12 speed and watching you brings back a lot of great memories. Where abouts in Waltham is your yard?
@@jimherman859 very true, but unfortunately the mack brand is popular where he lives,but parts are vary scarce in most other states. Plus the macks ride rough,and most so called drivers can't shift them.
Got my first superliner because I got my cabover stuck lol was 21. Cabover was fastast truck inthe fleet 350 mack cranked up. Had coffin bunk on superliner I loved it
Had so many air fresheners the lead man took it home a day said he didn't dare light a cigarette for 30 minutes after got out. Had it spotless and smelling great
I just picked up a 12 speed out of an 88rd gonna put it in my sigle ch I don't think mack ever had a ch with a 12 but once you get shifting a mack the hell with an eaton they're to simple lol
Yes- theres nothing dast about a bulldog 3 5 0 - but- big diff between CATS, CUMMINS (WHICH I LOVE) AND VOLVOs (blech) it will give suoer torque Climb like no other totally Bulletproof Forever (unlike my beloved CUMMINS) its build quality was better than anything, DETROIT DIEDEL, CAT POWER or vol-TRASH SWEDEN.
To the Boston trucker. Got a question. I have a 1980 r model mack with a 5 speed and low and high. Can u please tell what order or how do I go from low gear to high gear while driving. Is there a certain way to do this. So if I start out in low 2 and then go to low 3,but yet now the truck is moving pretty good, but how do I go in to high 3. Do I push in the clutch and the switch the divider,or click the divider while on the gas. I'm lost bro🤦♂️
There’s nothing quite like an old BullDog Mack the exhaust sounds the rattles the smells I drove a few of them the DM 685 tin nose DM 886 RD 882 tin nose R models MR model even a U model just a test drive I almost bought it 😆 you would take one of these Mack’s over anything new today I don’t want a Automatic gear box Def Egr computer it’s a mechanical Mack engine for me and A/C is a option 😊Love my Mack’s

I had a mack with a transmission like that. I pulled it out and put a 15 speed over drive in it with3:65 rears. It already had 24.5 rubber. I had the parameters set so it would go as fast as the 455 horsepower would pull it. It was a good tanker tanker after I did that to it. I drove it for a while and traded it for a new 379 with a 475 and an 18 speed with 3:55 rears. Set at 127 mph. I liked the Mack better. Haha
Wild how diffrent the modern kw is compared to the liner. It like when i went from driving the family business DM rolloff to a Volvo at trucking school back in 2008. World of difference. Last truck i drove was a 16 Pinnicale. i like the volvomacks lol
