Yeah, the best round was the 125 gr sjhp. I'm just going by the fact that the original .357 Mag was 158 gr, so it's very common and a good balance for many uses.

Thank you for this analysis and your credentials. I'm arguing all over the comments here in favor of lightweight bullets for high-pressure rounds like 9mm, ,357, .40, & 10mm, and heavyweight bullets for low-pressure rounds like .38, ,45 ACP, or .45 Long Colt. The crucial difference I argue is that low pressure rounds (can, ought to) use a softer lead alloy and thus expand well at low velocities, while high pressure rounds use harder lead, and thus only expand well/consistently at very high velocities. Some bullets are poorly designed, and any company could save money by using a .357 bullet for a .38 w/o using the softer alloy. I think the 158g .357 has plenty of velocity to expand reliably, at least a hot round should, but the 125g likely has enough penetration already. As I estimate, the 158g will perform better against barriers, soft "armor", or side/angled shots where extra penetration helps, and the 125g better with straightaway shots. It seems the FBI likes to err on the side of "a bit more penetration", at least with the 9mm, but I wonder if that even matters with 125g .357.

I don't believe 125gr is more effective than 158gr, a 158gr from a 4" barrel flying at 1,250 fps is going to stop any two legged threats faster than the 125gr.

@@perplexingperceptions8888 Today's bullets are better than in the past so the 158 gr is better. However, being a working lawman from late 60's through 80's when the 357 magnum was carried a lot, it was proven over and over that for self defense, the 125 gr was the best. Back then, most hollow points would not expand consistently unless the round was traveling at least 1200 FPS and most factory 158 gr barely reached that velocity.

The rounds don't seem comparable to me. 158gr for 357 mag isn't the best round, and BB is an extra hot brand of ammo.

i'm not sure why they made it a +p loading when you can get 1325fps +/- with about 600 energy using a standard load. but going +p in a 40 gets same pressures as +p in a 9, so why not go to a 357 sig (which puts you on the same level as the full power standard 40) instead of 9+p?

That is true but not everyone can afford to go buy another guns. There is lots of young dudes out there starting a family and one gun is the best they can do. Also I don't think the +p load is something that will be shot everyday, just like nobody drives there car as fast as they can on a daily bases. I think the 40 is a cool round and never really understood why the FBI didn't keep the 10mm and use the lighter FBI and have full power on hand for punching through heavier barriers.

I have noticed that also. Buffalo Bore in revolver is always hotter than Underwood, but Underwood wins in semi auto ammo, like .45 ACP at near 700 FPE and 10mm at 800 FPE.

I agree 100& this new keys see how small and light attitude has really hurt the fill potential of many rounds. Like Clint Smith owner of thunder says your carry gun should be comforting not comfortable. I've carried a full size all steel 1911 for 30 years its not hard to conceal a full size gun you just make adjustments to your wardrobe.

Actually, like a human sausage, size has nothing to do with it. Fatter bullets are less affected by barrel length compared to .30 cals (9mm/357sig). A G27 is often MORE accurate than a G23. A G30 in .45 is definitely more accurate than a G21, as the subcompacts have more sectional rigidity. However WEIGHT makes a serious impact towards recoil mitigation. The most accurate concealment .40 would technically be a Glock 29 with a .40 cal barrel conversion.

Buffalo Bore lists an 18.5" Marlin with this ammo at 2,153 FPS and 1,626 ft lbs. I don't know Hornady's ballistics, but I guarantee it's not that powerful. Hornady's is probably more than 50% weaker.

I always look at it like this; when I see that gel block lift and shake, makes me think there is no way the wind would not be knocked out of someone even for just a moment, as where stuff like 9mm never lifts and shakes it.

@@GunSam a lot of it has to do with how committed is the individual to the fight. Take out the heart and if the combatant is committed, they will operate until the oxygen is depleted to the brain that causes it to shut down. Best example of that is the 1986 Miami FBI shootout. One combatant had a fatal wound but stayed in the fight until oxygen level dropped and shut down the brain. Shot placement is key. Most bad guys aren't that committed...

The 158 grain Buffalo Bore .357 was chronographed at 2153 FPS out of a 18 1/2” carbine. That’s approaching 30/30 levels of power at the muzzle! Excellent close range deer slayer I’d say. Would need to get a .40 in either a keltec sub2000 or a Ruger PC40 to see what it could do

Funny, my ammo design was designed to open up about and inch before hitting anything, and break into honeycomb shaped fragments to slip through honeycombs. But of course i'm joking.

I recall a video of shooting through a Kevlar vest with a 7.62mm Tokarev into a pine board. Interesting thing was, the hole the 7.62 punched through the pine board was SQUARE! This means the weave of the Kevlar swaged the bullet from a round into a square cross section as the bullet penetrated. Something to consider.

Titanium plated ceramic discs that make up the new flexible rifle armor (sorry,can't recall company name but they advertise regularly on gun media platforms) sounds closest to your concept. The titanium backed with zirconia ceramics attempts to smash the bullet as much as possible for the laminate layers behind the discs. It is the new evolution of Dragon skin(which for some reason has failed to perform as promised.) Oh, "Safelife defence", check it out.

Low-pressure rounds (eg .45ACP, .38spcl. .45 Colt) tend to work more efficiently with heavier bullets, recoil notwithstanding. Low-pressure rounds are fundamentally different than high-pressure rounds, due to the softer lead-alloy they are (can be) made with. A .45 ACP (or .38 spcl, .45 Colt) hollowpoint can mushroom at very low velocities, but not so a 10mm or .40 cal or 9mm or .357 mag. High-pressure rounds rely on velocity for expansion, low-pressure rounds rely on softer lead. Heavier 10mm bullets (185g) with moderate loading pressures expand unreliably, and the same for many .40 cal bullets. Virtually all .45 ACP rounds will expand above maybe 600 fps.

@@berettaxd7566 True, but the Power of each of those rounds is virtually identical. (Power = Mass x Velocity). Energy is Mass x Velocity^2. The purpose of squaring the Velocity is to derive an "instant", while Power is given over time (ie, Mass X Ft/Second). The difference between light & heavy bullets amounts to higher energy bullets dumping more power sooner, while heavier bullets retain more Power deeper into the wound channel. The bottom line is that "muh ft/lbs of Energy" isn't all it's cracked up to be. It doesn't make sense to give a "Power" rating, so Energy is the rating because it's given at an "instant" or point in time, not over some or another period of time. Heavy vs. Light is a tradeoff because if the round dumps too much energy too fast, it makes a big splash, but doesn't penetrate very well. Heavyweight .45 bullets tend to do their dammage deeper into the wound compared to lighter weight bullets, which is a significant bonus if/when barrier penetration is an issue. With .45, it's nearly a moot point, as 185g and 230g are both quite good, but with other rounds like 10mm, .40 cal, and 9mm, using the lighter weight bullets is more crucial.

@@jorgesolis9468 10mm is a much higher pressure round than .45 ACP. The big difference is that 10mm bullets need a harder lead alloy, meaning they require high velocity to mushroom, while .45 is much softer. .45 ACP HP can mushroom at very low velocity, but with 10mm (and .40 cal, and 9mm), heavier bullets and/or light loads can yield inconsistent expansion.

I have thought about what little I know about your laws and realized, that I never leave home without my snub nose revolver. I live in Michigan so it's real easy to cross over, but I couldn't even declare I have that and legally enter. I'd have to carry something bugger like my 5" semi autos and case them in the trunk probably, if that's even allowed.

They aren't all alike. Lots of different 158gr bullets meet different barrels. Even if you had the same 686 that left the factory right next to his it's not the same. If you want to share your experience you have to name what kind of 158gr bullet from which company or with which load, which powder and out of which revolver and barrel length at what distance. Do you use the same buffalo bore ammo?

@@onpsxmember no I haven't tried them yet but I have shot several different brands and from round nose, semi-wadcutters, to hollow points and in my Ruger revolver they shoot the same

158's are great as the wear and tear is low, nice forcing cone seal. I wore away a small amount of my inner forcing cone just from .38+P alone, as I shot thousands and thousands of 125 gr.

.357 Buffalo Bore 125 grain expands very rapidly, to rapidly IMO. I agree that 140 grain is the sweet spot for there ammo when it comes to 2 legged protection. It’s also cooking out of my 6” GP100 7 shot.
