After I filmed this video I did look up this .45 ACP+P round on Underwood's website and identified the bullet. This is what they say about the bullet- "Underwood Ammo™ standard Jacketed Hollow Point rounds are unrivaled. We use Nosler bullets which feature a tapered copper alloy jacket which extends to the rim for increased feeding and reliability. These rounds are also characterized by a form-fitted pure lead core, which allows for reliable expansion and maximum accuracy."
@Nytmstr While I think the concept of .357 Sig is cool, the only cartridge that the .357 Sig compares to in .357 Magnum is 125 gr .357 Sig, hence how it gets it's name. Once you go heavier in bullets the .357 Sig becomes the lesser of the two in every regard other than capacity.
Interesting but not enough penetration in .45.....never scene a DGU where the bad guy let the defender position him and not allow an arm or shoulder to get in the way. SAM I gave u a shout out in my new Ball vs Hollow point video
@@DanTheWolfman damage is enough in this case. This is like taking a .75cal Musket Ball, it doesn't matter where youre hit. Its like a shotgun slug but without the overpenetration. The old 200gr "ashtray" hollowpoints for .45s turned into dinner plates too but they frequently had jacket separation or fragmentation issues, this one doesn't seem to have that problem. It turns into a 20mm ball.
I believe the Nosler bullets use pure lead cores which are softer and expand more reliably than a lead alloy core. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. Old skool Nosler bullet with a proven track record...A classic round.

Thank you Sam. This is the first time I've seen a faceoff between .357 magnum and 45 acp where the magnum didn't totally dominate. That expansion with the 45 is unbelievable and the reason for lack of penetration. That said, either will get the job done if needed.
Wish these ammo companies would test their ammo in the guns most folks are going to use. Most probably have the 4" barreled 357 mag rather than the 6".
Buffalo Bore is the go to company for consistency as they list many different tested barrels and are realistic with their numbers. Believe it or not Remington and Federal are also really really close to rated velocity and they both pretty much use 4" for everything, 45,9mm,.38,.357 etc
@@donnawinchell908 Yeah I see that Hornady uses an 8" for .357 Mag American Gunner but I think they use shorter for Critical Defense, so they can rate without "lying" that both the American Gunner and Critical Defense 125 gr both get "1,500 FPS". When in reality in a 4" barrel the 125 gr Critical Defense will get about 1,475 FPS but the 125 gr American Gunner gets 1,250 FPS. They would have done better to swap the loads and bullets and gave the American Gunner more recoil and the Critical Defense less. The American Gunner is perfect recoil for a snubby but it's a hard XTP bullet, the Critical Defense bullet is designed to be used in short barrel handguns. The reason why it's not this way is obvious though...typically Critical Defense costs $25/25 as where American Gunner is as low as $15/25...
@@GunSam yes I remember your tests. The lucky gunner is the least expensive 357 I've ever found. Even with the decreased power I would not want to be shot with one. Ruger Rich
I think if I really want to know what i'm getting i'll have to go to Buffalo Bore. They have a round that lists 1,600 FPS from a 4" S&W and my experience with Buffalo Bore is that if they list a velocity number, it's always spot on.
The .357 Magnum Buffalo Bore with the Hornady jhp is what I carry for concealed and carry. Very accurate and great expansion. I really don't have any problems with re-aquisition of target either.
I have a good friend that's a retired Texas State Trooper ...from shooting through vehicles to stopping bad guys .. he said in his own words there is nothing like a .357 magnum as a duty round ... he repos cars part time and yes he does carry a .357 magnum... 686 + to be exact.... long live the king ..
Nice video Sam! As for accuracy, for me 45acp has always been inherently accurate. I carry a G 30 gen 4 or Colt Defender lightweight 45acp around home and town. Its loaded with Underwood 230 gr +p Unicore or HST 230 +p. I also like the 185gr. +p Unicore (Gold Dot). Just a little shallow on penetration.A boxer 3 of Speer Gold Dot 230 is always around close though. The Underwood Unicore 45 acp bullet seems to penetrate better than the Nosler. The test I did with the 230 HST were tarantula looking. Between .76 and .81 most at the high end of .81. To me accuracy and penetration are the most important factors. But if handgun bullets just do crush damage ,I'll take my .45. A bigger bullet would give you more margin for error, in connecting with something vital. I'll take every advantage I can get, no matter how small.
Both rounds of the Underwood brand are impressive. The .45 ACP+p definitely performed very well with power and velocity. The.357 Magnum is equally powerful. Either round or both will offer personal protection.
I've bought a few boxes of their rounds myself in both .357 & .44 Magnum for my Ruger GP100 as well as my Desert Eagle. Haven't tried them in my Ruger just yet, but they cycled flawlessly through the Deagle.. In fact, i've even purchased several boxes of 9mm rounds from them as well, and should be testing them out sometime soon.
I'm very impressed with that 45 ACP load. I think if you hit someone in the arm with it, that arm isn't going to be doing much afterwards, assuming it's still attached.
@@GunSam I knew it was 45acp just saying I use the nosler in 10mm out of a kimber long slide target its cooking I'll have to see what I have wrote for chrono numbers but a 180 hits hard
I mentioned to you a while back that i used s 45 para ordnance with those 180gr bullets. They were purchased from advanced bullets.( master cartiriage) in villa rica ga. I do not know what bullet they used but it was large, maybe speers gd. It was rated at 1150 fps from them. Im glad you did a 45 180 grainer test. I still carry them in my Michigan armament survivalist 45. It powerful. By the way. Lived in Mi for 30 yrs. Downriver area. Hunted in Gleenie mi for yrs. Us michiganders gotta stick together . Great video sam.
I carry the underwood .45 +p daily in my S&W Shield. I have a lot of confidence in that round. It clearly is an improvement over the 800fps types. Another great video!
I know you probably aren’t firing off many of those and the case may be different for the Shield 45, but I have a Shield 9 and Smith told me +p Ammo is not recommended - just wanted to share
That 45 was exceptional. Kudos to Nosler for that bullet. Glad it met velocity claims (i am always suspicious of underwood). The 125 gr 357 just can't reliably exceed 1450-ish unless u use a long barrel (or a carbine). I will stick with Rem or Federal there. Back in the 80's the Rem 185 gr +p was said to reliably reach 1100 fps in a Commander. I think that load is probably still made in the HTP line. Might be less expensive than Underwood too. Either should do quite well. Great test.
Thanks. The .45 in general is a pretty good cartridge. With standard power 230 gr ammo I find the recoil to be identical to 9mm. I always hear of people claiming the muzzle will jump, but not really in my opinion.
I love shooting my Glock 21. One of the easiest gums to shoot. Recoil is actually pleasant. It is there, but mild. I personally would rather shoot it than my Glock 17, except for the per round cost ;-)
Awesome video. That 45 round through that gun was amazing. But I doubt it would be so great in my 45 shield or I'd be wanting some of those. That bullet looked like a hydro-shock to me, but I don't have a huge amount of knowledge on bullet designs. Lol 🙄🤣
I just bought a box of Underwood 45 acp +P 230 gr. They're loaded also with Nosler Sporting bullets. I only paid $22. I couldn't resist that price. I wish you could test those. They are rated at 1000 fps and 511 fpe. I was a little hesitant because I couldn't recognize the bullet but when I realized they were made by Nosler and I saw your video, I was glad I bought them. The ones that I bought before from Underwood were loaded with 200 gr Gold Dots, standard velocity and they expanded great on water jugs.
After decades of use we downsized from 1911s to .380 (Sig P238) and I went Ruger .357. So much easier to carry and shoot. Thanks for another well made vid.
I've shot some of that Underwood .45 +P 185gr through my 1911 and it's a seriously impressive round. And yet the recoil really isn't that bad, and certainly feels more mild than hot .357 loads in my revolver.
It had less felt recoil than most .45 ammo as the bullet weight just don't rise the muzzle much. It was a funny feeling, I could feel the pressure and hear the snappy sound through the ear muffs and the recoil was snappier, but not snappy like a .40 or the like. Sort of like preparing to fire a .30-06 and you just realized you fired a .243 instead. Just very easy to manage.
@@GunSam The Glock 30 has substantial less felt recoil than the 36. It also seemed much easier to shoot accurately, probably because of the extra heft. That said, it can be a bit much to carry around all day, though it's definitely very doable. Now I carry a Glock 30S, which is easy enough to carry, but recoils a bit more like the 36.
@Tyler Miller concealment express kydex holster and a 9 round flush fit mag. The flush fit prints much less. I run the Underwood 185 as shown in the video. Over penetration is a problem a lot of people overlook in an edc gun. This round is a great balance of stopping power and penetration.
That was so awesome. I loved both rounds and would carry either. I carry some V-Crown now in my Glock 30. It’s ok. Not too much recoil. Manageable and accurate. I carry Gold Dot in my S&W 66. Another good round form me. Thanks for all the great content. Some of the best stuff on RU-vid.
I have v-crown 230gr jhp in my Smith&Wesson m&p m2.0 45, but I wish they were just a bit hotter like 900fps instead of 830fps, but they do perform and function well!!!
Can't go wrong with either round/caliber... both calibers served for decades; the .357mag (125grSjHp & 158gr) was serving Law Enforcement & the .45auto (230grFmjRn) was serving our Military 🇺🇸 And 👍👍 to Underwood... "when you have to SEND-IT, send the best!!"
Have 14 of them in my Glock21sf as we speak. Def pushing 10mm/41 magnum ballistics, really wakes the 45acp up. Love these rounds and trust my life to them.
" jug or naut" got me started towards the like button but the reference to "bologna" or " Baloney" (you'd be surprised) Got a sub !! GREAT CONTENT AND FUNNY TOO ! (the best humor is unintended) 👍👍🇺🇲👍👍✝️
Easily, it would stop a wolf well. If you look up the goats at Strasbourg test you can get a good idea on what works well for a goat sized animal, and I would think that a wolf would be even easier to put down than that.
Bro these 45's will not only stop the wolf, it will make him reconsider his entire existence lol. I don't think people take me seriously when I tell them this 45 acp load is no joke.
Up front, both are excellent defensive rounds. Honestly, when you indicated the manufacturer stated velocities, I thought it was nonsense. It would be difficult to believe that the extra 2" of barrel length would get the 357 up to 1700 fps. You correctly noted that it performed like many other "average" 357s. The 45 was a shocker. Having watched videos of other +P rounds that never got close to 1200 fps; this was extremely impressive. Additionally, your results probably show that you don't have to worry about your neighbor down the block if this cartridge is used. The expansion was amazing. A nice demo overall.
Overall, Underwood rated velocities for semi auto cartridges are usually correct, but they are wrong for revolver cartridges. Buffalo Bore is always right about stated velocity revolver or auto. The thing I will give to Underwood is they are cheaper and bullet specific. Buffalo Bore is often $40 a box and just say "JHP", and you never know if it will be an XTP, a Sierra, or anything else. Underwood is half the cost and is specific to the bullet. If they say bonded it's always a Gold Dot, if it's an XTP they say XTP.
Those .357 Magnum 125 grain GDHP's are great for enhanced barrier penetration, and would make a great duty round, but not necessarily more useful for home defense than your run-of-the-mill 125 grain SJHP's from Remington or Federal. I'd argue that the later would be more suitable for home defense if you had neighbors nearby to reduce the possibility of collateral damage. Just my two cents, but YMMV. Great test, thank you!
Thank you. My interior wall is 100 year old cinder block lol, so I don't worry too much, plus no wall penetration or even chipped paint in my hands! Well, I suppose I could miss and like you mention, it's good to know what sort of collateral damage is possible.
@@GunSam What would you need min 7 rounds to test? What would your guess be a bit less expansion and decent penetration because of mass to about 14" jug 3 at least? it's 230 at 1000fps prob 5" barrel...so from 4ish " maybe 14-16" your jugs maybe so about 12.5" real gel? I plugged you big time in my new 380 ammo selection vid, and maybe in my upcoming 9mm and 45 vids
Gun Sam _Revolver Aficionado_ I agree. I’ve seen a video of a guy testing 45 out of a carbine and pistol, can’t remember the barrel lengths. Tested several types of ammo and in the carbine all types had an increase in velocity but the +p ammo had I think around 200 FPS increase vs the 40-110 FPS increase with standard pressure ammo. I think with a carbine and that ammo you could get around 1400 fps+. Cool stuff
I used to handload 45 ACP 185gr to just over 45ACP to just over 1100 in a 1911A1. Thought it was pretty hot. Garrett's +P load would be an outstanding anti-goblin round. Not to say the 357 Garrett wouldn't work.
Thanks for another great video. right up my alley - 357 carry and 45ACP nightstand. having trouble finding Underwood ammo, and when I do 10mm is less costly than 45ACP ... ???
That's actually very good of Underwood. The .40 cal bullets will cost wholesale less than .45 cal bullets. So rather than mark it up they pass those savings on to you.
I'll bet the local varmints love you when you leave shreds of bologna everywhere! Nice shooting at 50 yards. Hey, have you ever tried 45 ACP Winchester 230 grain Ranger T series? Lucky Gunner got 1.00" expansion.
I have not tried that ammo but did test some of the 230 gr PDX1 which I think uses the same or similar bullet. Tested it a few times in the 3.7" G36 and it always expanded well.
I have both those rounds. I haven't yet shot the 45, but will be doing so from a Nighthawk Custom Firehawk with a compensated 5" barrel; I'm expecting awesome results. For the 357, you need to fire that from a 5.25" or 6" barrel to allow for more burn and velocity build-up in the barrel. I'm betting on 1600 fps and 1700 fps, respectively.

I have a New Service Colt in 45 long Colt with lanyard hop at the base of the grip . Issued by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Prior to the automatics was carried by them on horseback. There’s not much to say about the 45 except for the fact American and the only nation which has been using since our beginning
Just watched several of your videos and am wondering why Underwood doesn't load their 357magnum ammo hot....you're getting 1400+ FPS here and the last video I watched you had Buffalo Bore 125grain that averaged a little over 1700 FPS. Thats significantly more powerful than Underwood. I don't look for an answer this is just an observation.
I have noticed it too with a lot of their ammo. They claim their test barrel is 6", however I have tested some of their ammo rated at 1,600 FPS and I end up getting like 1,380 FPS or something of that nature. If Buffalo Bore says lets say 1,600 FPS in a 6" barrel, my 4" will give me something like 1,550 FPS or the like.
nice defense round, but when I leave the city I switch to either a flatness fmj or a hardcast in my Smith&Wesson m&p 2.0 45acp!!! love that 45acp+p 255gr hardcast!!! serious hog stopper!!!
A Glock 35 in 40sw or 357 sig would also be a great candidate for comparison against a 4" 357 revolver. They should get very similar performances and similar weight despite the revolver having 9roynds less capacity
Great video. I wished you had a Glock 30 or a S&W Shield 45 to test that bullet in. That might be a good comparison of guns as well. Too bad I don’t live close or I’d let you borrow mine.
I used to have a 3.7" G36 in .45 ACP. I traded it because I got way too many comments how my testing was invalid because I did not have a 5" barrel. So a couple of years ago I traded the G36 off, then found this G41 MOS for an even $500. It was used but never fired, 3 mags and all the MOS attachment plates and screws never opened from the bubble pack. A new G21 was what I was looking for, but they ran $600, so getting an extra 8/10th of an inch and extras for less money made it hard to resist the G41.
I understand completely. I’m strictly speaking in regards to short barreled 45 autos. Because a lot of these .45ACP hollow points can’t get up enough velocity to expand properly in these short barreled guns. I always shoot jugs of water with 4 layers of denim to see if they will expand. I like the bologna idea, but with the price of ammo and guns right now I’m too poor to be wasting food. 😉🤣😂🤣
Wow, that 45......meat mist. Love to see both these rounds chrono'd with carbines. (Rossi M92 .357, maybe a semi-auto hi-point, JR carbine, TNW, kriss vector, etc for the 45acp
As with nearly all ammunition or firearm, it just depends. In bear country the glock with more rounds and larger bullet, is what I would hike with. Does the .357 pack more of a 'wallop'? Well it always depends.
In .357 Magnum, no question - Buffalo Bore. I have ran a lot of both companies, and with semi auto calibers they are about equal power, and with some varieties of .38 Special+P, Underwood is more powerful. But in .357 Magnum, the hottest ever Underwood load I fired was something like 605 ft lbs energy or so. With Buffalo Bore the hottest was 794 ft lbs energy, both from the same 4" S&W revolver here.
A bit underwhelming on the 357. I got some 158gr hardcast 38 Special from them a week or two ago that does 1300 from a 4" Taurus. And it keeps going and going like the Energizer Bunny. That 45 is cool, and perfectly adequate against bipedal predators. It's too fast to do well against any sort of game. Massive initial damage, but the bullet jacket is too thin to keep it together to get penetration. Not generally necessary vs a biped
I would guess that using either one of these rounds INDOORS AT NIGHT in a home defense scenario would probably result in having the shooters hearing and vision compromised/incapacitated for several seconds following just a single shot.
I really don't know. I didn't see any flash with either, typically if there's a lot of flash it can be seen even in the day time so i'd say they are using a good flash suppressed powder. As far as sound goes it would depend on how much fear there was. Usually there's audio exclusion in a high stress situation that brings 130 db noises down to like 40 db to the shooter. Doesn't mean there wouldn't be hearing damage later, but it does mean that the sound won't effect the ability to keep shooting without flinching or whatever.
Thx Sam, interesting as always. My former department is trading their Glock 23 for the new Glock 19 and will issue a 147 grain HP for duty. As retirees we qualify for LEOSA in June and I have a Smith M&P Compact 2.0 in 9MM I’ll use. I know it’s off topic but what’s your opinion of this heavy for caliber 9MM?
The main aspect of 147 gr vs 115 or 124 is that it will penetrate through auto glass in a straight line better. The downside is that the energy of most 147 gr is lower so it's slightly less effective than 115 or 124 gr.
Gun Sam, can you perform fmj 10 mm vs. fmj 45 +p? i have a glock 41 that i want to use if i encounter Bears. love the g-41. don't want to purchase 10mm, already have .45acp.thanks

I would look into 45 super and 450 smc. The latter is a 45acp magnum and the letters stand for short magnum cartridge. Both will give you all the protection you need without having to monkey around with a conversion. Ask Sam how he feels about conversions all you would have to change is a couple springs and keep your gun as 1 unit
Sam, At this point I'm not sure how much further you can keep going with the same guns, since I think you've shot every kind of ammo you can buy and make LoL!. Next phase, maybe sometime you can use a 16" and 20" .357 and 44mag, 9mm, carbine and rifles and see/show the full extent comparisons of pistol ammo chambered in both, as many of us own and love our revolvers with same cal rifles.. Still Love the videos bro!.
Believe it or not there's still a lot to be tested especially since the .357 revolver can test .38 Special which there's a lot of that out there. The .45 ACP I still have yet to test HST so I need to do that. At some point I plan to get a 10mm barrel as well as 10mm mag and 24 lb spring and converting this Glock to a 10mm.
Great comparison!! You can keep the bologna this time!! One question. A glock, a glock really. Just kidding fanboys it was awesome. Ruger makes a 45acp/ 45colt revolver, but you have to use moon clips. Ruger Rich
Thanks. I have always wanted Glocks before I got Glocks, but now that I have owned two I really don't like them. They are "fine" I supposed except for this 41 has had issues. I also have friends that feel the same way. I have one friend that only carries Sigs but he also has Glocks and he had to carry a Glock while his Sig was at the shop getting grip panels fixed where the threading on the Sig grip screw got stripped. He carried his Glock 23 and was like, "eh it's fine I guess".
@@GunSam my son had to carry a glock 19 when he was a correction officer and he hated it. His carry pistol is a custom built 1911. It was built by a military arms manufacturer that he new while in Iraq. It's fantastic and I'm jealous. Ruger Rich
I plan to get one of those combo Redhawks. I csn't imagine a more versatile and useful woods gun. Warm 45 Colt loads for the woods (esp if i move to AK), and excellent 45 ACP's in a moon clip or 2 as backup. That and maybe the 44 Mag snubbie (the backpacker model, not the SRH Alaskan) and i would be pretty well set.
@@GunSam my glock 41 wouldn't run my favorite carry ammo the hornady critical duty 220gr+p absolutely wouldn't run it, so now I have a Smith&Wesson m&p m2.0 45acp!!! and I love glocks, but that was the first glock that I ever had that wouldn't run!!!
