More than 360 buildings have been destroyed or damaged in Jasper after a wildfire hit the town Wednesday. As Sean Amato reports, town, provincial and federal officials agree that nothing could have been done to stop the flames.
They did everything they could. Could someone please elaborate. A friend was there who defied the evacuation order. He saw very little done. The evacuation was Monday night. Tuesday was a nice day, no wind, clear skies. How is it that heavy equipment was brought in and not used. Where was the fire retardant, respirators, firetrucks, helicopters, planes etc. My friend watched as his house and neighbourhood burned. Saying we did everything we could is like Doctors watching someone die and not doing anything. Give people the equipment, the resources, and the opportunity and it's amazing what can be done, but without leadership and the quibbling about federal vs provincial responsibilities no wonder Jasper burned. There were plenty of research papers, fire management plans and solutions over the last ten years. Very little was implemented. So sad. Municipal, provincial, and federal leaders need to be held accountable.
No one cares about research anymore. They think climate change is a hoax, and it's mere coincidence the pine beetles have spread rampantly into new environments. They see rampant fires and record heat waves and are like "Hmm, that's odd". Meanwhile, the scientists and researchers and fire protection agencies are losing their minds trying to warn people that this is what happens.
Apparently, in Canada, trees can only be cut down AFTER they are burning. Otherwise, each tree has to be personally interviewed about their feelings for the future, and then that interview has to be analyzed by a psychologist, and those counsellors aren't easy to find, because they need special PhDs mandated by new provincial agencies. INSANITY!
Absolutely OUTRAGEOUS. Mayor, Emergency Dept and Fire chief should resign. Who in their right mind pats their own back, congratulates themselves and each other on doing a good job AFTER causing the entire population to evacuate and after 300+ buildings have burned. Go get a reality check. Govt. officials praising themselves after a failed test is ultimate cringe and narcissistic behavior.
@@MercifulHunter For years people wanted those dead trees removed due to their high fire hazard risk, but Parks Canada refused to do so, said that doing so would be an unnatural thing to do!!!
The mayor lost his own home, 37% of the town is destroyed, and he is ignoring Parks Canada's policy of criminal negligence towards land management. . . Wow!
We are so sad for Jasper residents. My wife is from Jasper where we met over 50 years ago and were married in the church that is now burnt to the ground and shown in some of the videos. The home she grew up in is gone, many of our old friends lost everything including their hard earned businesses. A little sympathy and respect is needed not finger pointing and uninformed blame games. Natural forces are sometimes unstoppable and can override any effort and plans that humble humans might make. A little help right now might serve everyone better.
Honestly it might be best to close national parks to the public and make them conservation areas. It will cost less and protect the land. The nation park models are essentially designed as amusement parks
Our own canadians are in need . Let's see if federal government donates any billions to our hard working jasper canadians who deserve the financial help!
I wonder how much of the money that went to Ukraine could have been used to clear the dead forest around Jasper. Very sad. It was such a beautiful town. I hope for them to proudly rise from the ashes to rebuild more beautiful than ever before. -From the Okanagan BC.
Yeah, it might have. But how many towns do you know with proper fire barriers? Ive been across the continent, specifically the interior, and i haven't seen a single town with such measures in place. So the issue isn't the lack of a fire barrier, its the lack of such precautions being mandatory/common practice. But even besides that our species wide agenda against wildfires is just making them worst. The natives of this land co-existed with wildfires since the beginning, they are part of the natural ecosystem with entire species of plants and by extention animals relying on this cycle of renewal, just look at Redwoods, their seeds litterally require fire to germinate! But instead of having fires occour naturally and burn themselces out we battle them. This only leaves dead foliage to build up on the forest floor for DECADES. So when a fire finally gets out of control there is nothing stopping it from becoming a true monster. Where there would have been a small fire "decimating" a forest it would grow back stronger and heathier just to wait for the mext cleansing by fire. Instead, we fight the fire, and by doing so it only makes things harder down the line..
@@EthanLomas Governments often fail to use their police power to protect the public health, safety and welfare. I am not sure if that's in the Canadian Constitution.
Yes 400 feet high. I have seen video like that from a fire in 1986 during the provincial fire orientation required to work as a fire fighter. If you take that short course, you have it for life.
I think it's less about firefighting equipment and more about clearing dead wood away from the town beforehand, and making fire breaks. When the fire is roaring and it's windy there is literally nothing any humans can do to stop it. Has to be preventative not reactive.
Even if most critical infrastructure is still standing who will be using them anytime soon? The other homes that weren't burned will not likely be livable for awhile since there will be smoke damage to them. It will likely be very tramatic for any residents to return to the homes left standing.
My heart goes out to all Albertans affected by these dreadful destructive wildfires - the video cannot convey the acrid smell, deafening noise, glowing fires and dense smoke which combine to fill the sky with an orange hue. I am still waiting for the climate change deniers all I hear are the crickets
From what I gather from the comments, this falls under Federal jurisdiction. So... blame Turdeau. But honestly you should nnot make it political at all, it's a tragedy. Wish the victims the best and move on instead of acting like a keyboard warrior freak on the internet.
@@sylvariatzaka from what you gather? Lol… Maybe we should ask Trudeau to walk off the flat earth huh. Provincial emergency protection programs are funded by ‘provincial revenues’, provincial taxation. The one Danielle cancelled… $500 million. How is that a federal accountability? From what you gather… seriously? Where’d you go to school? Mars?
@@Dale180Outside the town site, the entire park is under Federal jurisdiction for everything that includes forest management. Even in the town site Federal Government has much of the control and owns all the property. All property is leased from the federal government, no one owns their property except a very small number of properties that are grandfathered from long ago.
So Jasper is a National Park! It falls under Federal Jurisdiction! Where is the federal government? Where is Justin Trudeau! Good on Daniel Smith she is a good leader but the PM may want to show his face in a situation like this!
Smith cut firefighting spending. Even if she's not responsible, she hasn't helped. She also delayed emergency funding for residences compared to the last government who got payments out in just 2 days. She told these people "that's what insurance is for".
@@extrememuffineater you would think that old Justin with his extreme views on climate change would show up to a MAJOR event such as this and not send one of his lackies. Do me a favour DONT VOTE! Actually forget that last part…it won’t matter anyway!

Halifax, Jasper, etc. first events like this in modern history for these cities. Climate change is real and it's going to get worse. Government needs to be incredibly proactive about improving our fire control
We've actively fought forest fires for many decades, curious as to what effect that has had on the amount of fuel available for fires to burn? It'd be naive to not think that it couldn't be a contributing factor as well.
Why are officials there ?? Why are reporters there ?? Why aren't fire fighters there ?? Where is the fire ?? Wasn't it going to engulf the whole town ?? Did anybody turn off gas lines ?? Did any body turn off the power ?? Where are they all staying ?? Did they all just get flown in for photo opps ?? Are they not concerned with where the next town is going to burn down ?? Why are they always around after a disaster ?? Never around to stop one ?? Hhmmmmmmmm Lots of simple questions people should be asking. If they didn't try and save the town isn't that ARSON ??
Actually they sent help when asked and furthermore parks are a joint shared responsibility between the municipality, province and feds and the province amid wildfires every year decided to cut funding for fire services and on top of that D Smith to talk about separation and her fake tears during her press conference.
The forest around jasper has been dead for years due to an invasive beetle. You could see it pretty clearly from the skytram. It sucks that the buildings burned down, but that area was way overdue for a fire. This one had nothing to do with climate change.
@@chnbal Hate is a pretty strong word. My different from pointing out she is and incompetent, uneducated and anti-science. She plays populist games for political gain. Perhaps finally she will stop pretending climate change is not a truly existential crisis to us all. The tears just don' t cut it.

The majority of the population of Jasper are not rich people. They are in the service industry and often work at minimum wage and live in very modest rented premises. This fire will put many of them out of work and home. Their futures are very uncertain and the financial uncertainty will be immediate. A little sympathy might be a better option for your soul.
@@dougstewart3243 From what I heard this one was caused by lightning. But bro, if you think there weren't an absurdly high number of arsonists the past few years in Canada you've had your head in the sand. No clue whatsoever if the government had people do anything on purpose, but there was arson. And a lot of it. In the town I live in we've had two arsonists lighting fires everywhere and we recently caught one of them.
