Edward Burne-Jones is sometimes called the last Pre-Raphaelite but although his work represents the medieval period of myth and legend he uniquely creates a timeless dream-world knights, lovers and femme fatale.
An affair with Maria Zambuco became public and created a scandal so that he received few commissions during the 1870s but in the 1880s his reputation grew and he became one of the most famous international artists in the latter part of his life.
His reputation declined towards the end of his life and did not recover until the 1990s. His work is essentially Victorian but is now seen as an important stepping stone to twentieth century art in terms of its influence on international Symbolism, and as a stepping stone to the deeper psychological and sexual insights of the twentieth century.

It is disgraceful how these great artists work have been treated thanks to Modernism, lets hope Rothko, Pollock and Damien Hirst end up in the skip for ever.

As the vid early on explains, the Symbolists (who were Modernists exploring dream link mediaeval myths and mysticism, eg Klimt) were much influenced and inspired by Burne-Jones. The 'artists' that you mention are of course, of the Post-Modern variety. Both Burne-Jones of the pre Raphaelite Brotherhood and the Modernists wanted to re-invent the past; this cannot be said of the Post Modernists, who aim to deconstruct the past and reject any grand narrative.

Interesting presentation. One of my favourite artists, although I marginally prefer Waterhouse. I don't think either would have appreciated the art movements of the early 20th century, which all tended to reject beauty, dreaminess, mythological inspiration, chivalry and historicism.

OMG, the story of how The last sleep of Arthur in Avalon was damaged and how they "solved" it is simply barbaric.
