Picking and gutting an Aegis dimple lock. This one has 18 pins arranged in three rows, twelve of which relock as the plug is turned.
Picking begins at 1:04, first stage open at 2:28, second stage from 3:22 to 3:44, and gutting from 4:30 to 12:36.
Note: While wrangling pins at 6:17, I incorrectly described the resting positions of the spools. The spools sit at shear for the zero-lift pins (by definition), in the belly of the spool for the middle two bitting heights, and on the top section of the spool for the max-lift pins, such that the spool comes into play on every pin that needs to be lifted.

You made that look easy,a sign of a person at easy with the task at hand. This type of lock is not found here ,so watching you pick and gut this lock Is twice the joy.well done again and thanks for this unique pick, billbo.

Surprising to see cheap casting bible & plug. Wondering if you ever came close to jamming one of those tiny spools sideways in the shear line? Nice pick with excellent technique and tools, plus great explanation of the Aegis 18 pinner.

That's a very interesting setup with this lock. Quite high security but still "cheaply" manufactured. The simplicity of the lock helps a lot too, without reducing the security of it. You seemed to avoid all false sets. How did you manage that? Awesome picking and thanks for sharing 👍

It's not that I avoided any false sets -- I spent the vast majority of the pick working from a false set. You can see that the witness marks on the plug and the housing line up at the very beginning, but once I start setting pins I gradually fall deeper into the false set, and have to counter-rotate the plug to keep setting pins. If you watch where the tensioner crosses the fulcrum pin on the left side of the vise, you can see how much plug movement there actually is as I progress though the first stage of the lock.

@@legendofthesamurai I'll check that. Just woke up when I watched the video lol. Sorry about that :) You sure didn't struggle with them. It's always good to see methodical and precise pickers like you put theory into practice. Sure keeps me motivated to pay attention to precision so thanks for sharing what you do!

Nicely done. Did you find out you needed something to block the pins the hard way? Where do you find all these wierd and intresting locks?

Any time a keyway is more than ~2.4 mm wide I expect the drivers to be an issue, and I'll usually gut the lock to check before I attempt to spin the plug fully. In this case I anticipated the drivers falling through, but my normal packing pieces were a tiny bit too short to retain the ball-bearing, which did end up in the keyway when I first spun the plug. As for sourcing these locks, the vast majority are coming from Yahoo! Japan Auctions via a proxy-bidding service.

@@legendofthesamurai thats a good way to think about the keyways. I hadent thought much about it. Something new I learned. Japanese auctions through a proxy bidding service. Sounds like it could get expensive
@legendofthesamurai
@legendofthesamurai 3 года назад
@@Deadlocks86 It certainly can get expensive, but if you plan your purchases carefully, buy a large enough volume of locks, and use relatively cheap (and very slow) consolidated shipping methods, it can be reasonably economical overall. It's also one of the only ways to get these locks.

@@legendofthesamurai that all makes sense. Shame stuff like this isn't more available. They are really cool and intresting locks👍

Great picking of a very cool lock. It's a shame about it being cast. Take care and have a great week.
