Do you still want to update the project camp academy website regularly? You never mentioned it in your videos. I thought documenting your work for others was a big part of the idea of the complete project. Plus: the winter is now the perfect time to write documentations and tutorials when you can't work much on the land.

Yes, there was a TV programme in the UK a couple of years ago where a chap was living in (IIRC) France and used smashed clay tiles for his paths around the property. It was a cheap and easy way to get a permeable but hard wearing path surface, which meant he could go from his house to his greenhouse without getting covered in mud on wet days.

I know a situation where the owner of the land was fined cause he utilized ruble to repair a local access road, judge understood that he was trying to help and reduced the fine still he paid some of it. The law exists, cause many decide to dump the ruble illegally.

Check the roof angle on your project. It might not be steep enough for tiles. Tile roofs require steeper angles than corrugated metal sheets or shingles
@tamasdedinszky9143
@tamasdedinszky9143 2 года назад
Agreed. I built a very similar structure for a car once and had enough tiles left over from the roof of the house to cover it. I had to use plastic sheets as underlay because some of the water didn't slide down fast enough towards the gutter but down between the tiles. Also, the vertical and horizontal beams need to be joined together with a piece of beam as a triangle, just as you draw the gallows in the game 'hangman', to avoid the whole structure swinging, especially under the weight of the tiles.

those buildings in stone are of a specific type of construction in portugal with the name '' propianho '' (pronunciation and writing may vary from region to region) which really just means that the walls are built with trimmed stoned at least on tow of its faces and stacked together until the wall is formed. It's a very old and secure way of building that lasts hundreds of years. It is also very praised and valued among Portuguese people and it also increases the value of the house a bit. Normaly it's a very expensive way of building so be prepared to take that into account when deciding, and also the ones that know how to build well that way are becoming very scarce and they cost also more money to hire.

Look into prehistoric building techniques to find interesting ways to use those small trees for buildings. One technique that's very interesting is burning the end of the wood before putting it into the ground it keep it from burning.
@davidorf3921
@davidorf3921 3 года назад
Given the fire issues, you can get away with wood in buildings provided you separate it from the outside with a non combustible (preferably insulating) layer, tiles are great, the problem is if the ends of the roof beams are exposed, the ends catch fire and take the fire along the beams which then fail and the roof collapses, keep a fire break around the house and don't have any exposed timber on the outside and it will survive all but the worst fires, if you get a firestorm though all bets are off
@sim-sam

Cool work, re-using is everything. You could even use the roof of the oven-shed as water-collector. The broken tiles are still good for repairing or filling up - or you can grind them and use it to mix it with sand for a water-filter (the more you will use water as in the shower, the kitchen and maybe elsewhere, the more you might consider to filter it via a pond-sand-crushedTile filter...

@SolarLantern424
@SolarLantern424 2 года назад
12:03 This was mostly a structurally solid roof. You can see some issues at one end where someone has clearly made a bit of a dirty hack, maybe to protect the part of the roof in good condition. There is obviously stuff that needed replacing but this was a repairable bit of roof. When something terrible happens like a fire or damage etc, it's tempting to write something off and buy or build a new one but sometimes with a bit of thought and imagination repairs can be made. I think someone made a bit of a hack to this roof to try and protect the bit of the roof that was good so more work could be done later. It's a surprisingly well built structure in great condition compared to some of the ruins you see in Portugal. Look at those solid tree like supports. They appear to be in very good condition. It appears like there is minimal fire damage to the building too although it's hard to get a good look from he videos so far. What are you going to do about this building next?

Quite weird indeed... When I was asking for advice on choosing between wood, aluminum or PVC for the new windows, I was warned by an architect that only with the consent of the city council I can proceed to change the colour of the street-facing walls of a decaying house, as well as its window and door frames... To replace the roof structure from wood to light steel, an architectural project is needed... Meanwhile, my neighbors keep building unlicensed additions to their homes, in plain sight, without consequences! This in the outskirts of a small town in Ribatejo.

@@m000Theevilcow I actually went to city council and wrote a formal complaint against one of them who was about to remove a crumbling fiber cement roof with exposed asbestos fibers... To give you an idea, the demolition people were breaking the sheets with their knees and feet, so the pieces fit better in the pickup truck! An inspector came to investigate and, shocked, said I was right. Months passed until I received a letter from the city council saying that the owner had a legal project to renovate the building. The letter had no reference to asbestos... and from then on I have a reputation as a whistleblower! Plus another neighbor of mine who built a huge illegal outdoor kitchen in front of my yard is a cop...

We love seeing all of your progress! This is one of our favorite sustainable living projects. Much love & respect from America, the land of maximum waste. What building system to use in a fire prone environment? The obvious answer is a building system that uses fireproof building materials like stone, brick, ceramics, cement, adobe, steel, etc on the OUTSIDE to protect all of the flammable materials that are on the INSIDE like wood, fabrics, plastics, and people. The very definition of sustainability & resilience is built structures that last for hundreds of years with just basic, minimal maintenance. Structures that easily survive fires, floods, high winds, and extreme weather. Here in America, watching people who live on coastal land below sea level rebuild homes previously destroyed by hurricane flood waters in exactly the same fashion as before makes one question the triumph of style over substance. If they rebuilt on tall rebar reinforced concrete pilings and built round hurricane resistant structures like a Deltec house, then each year's seasonal hurricanes would cause minimal damage that would be easily repairable. But, of course, that is not what people do. I wonder why? You folks already have fireproof metal shipping containers for your core infrastructure, so you are off to a wise, truly sustainable modular architecture. For these other, larger, custom buildings, the wisest approach is a fireproof outer building envelope that will protect the inside from even the worst forest wildfires (which you know are coming someday). Given the long-term, repetitive costs of re-building & re-provisioning after catastrophic fire losses, even the use of cement would probably be more CO2 efficient than wood when ALL the fire losses are totalled up. Build once, build for the local conditions, build for long-term resilience, build for low maintenance costs, use local materials when practical, but avoid purism in favor of a practical permanence. (You'll appreciate this last value when all of your belongings & people are safe inside your buildings while broad swarthes of charred landscape are still smoldering and all your wooden structures are toast.) My 2 cents in a nutshell.

Isn't possible to transform plastic that goes to the trash into good beams to use instead of wood? I see some advantages: - it last longer - don't need treatment - probably lighter - transform trash in reusable things Maybe someone of precious plastic can help with that! I WOULD LOVE TO HELP YOU WITH SOMETHING!!! I'm a Portuguese waiting for some challenge that I can apply! All the best! ❤️

There are many waters within Portugal that a person could potentially find gold by panning in the creeks and rivers. ... The Ceira Valley and Gois region has been known to have gold for thousands of years. Would you consider panning for gold in the creek you cleaned up in update #23

Is Rita your secret weapon when it comes to befriending all these fantastic local people? :) I am assuming she is Portuguese. How is your own Portuguese, and do you intend to include some Portuguese people in the project in a more permanent way (not only as tradespeople, but as residential participants).

The angle of roof tiles is a big thing. There are many different tiles and I looked for option for myself and came to the lowest angle of 42° for basic clay tiles. The problem is the heavy rainfall back splash that you sometimes have in southern Europe...
@SolarLantern424
@SolarLantern424 2 года назад
I don't understand why you did this. It's a big building, if you were worried about falling tiles then why not work in the half of the building without tiles? The existing half of the roof seemed solid and was still protecting that half of the building. The danger of a falling tile hurting someone was minimal especially if you were aware of the situation. What is your plan for this building now? Are you having a new roof put on it? Why didn't you repair that part of the roof instead of having it trashed?

@@Roosmarijn035 Sawdust for the compost toilet will be fine. Pine chips on pathways also no problem. Adding pine chips into compost with horse, cow, chicken manure, other green waste etc. , shouldn't pose an acidity problem if you leave it 12 months or so. Portugal woodland is dominated by Eucalyptus & pine.

You could begin harvesting the largest mimosa trees. Dry them over the winter, and mill them in the spring. Smaller mimosas can be used for wattle & daub constructon, as you showed in the video. Your greatest resource is also the invasive species you are trying to rid the land of.

10:28 I couldn't believe how shit that was. You should have told them to take down all tiles carefully instead of smashing them on the ground. What is the point of smashing them on the ground, it just creates more work for later and it doesn't take that much longer to hand the bad tiles down with the other tiles. When they are on the ground they can be sorted into good tiles and bad tiles and you might even find a less critical use for the bad tiles. What a load of nonsense. This was an awful thing to happen and you should have made sure it didn't happen. There are only a couple of ruins on the land and you should be handling this better. I couldn't believe this.
