I used to have this exact lock. They were really popular when I lived in China. The funny thing is the key that comes with it works with the other locks! I borrowed someone’s bike once when mine had problems!
I mean with 3 pins there's bound to be pinning collisions. But I'm also not surprised if they only make a very low number of different pin layouts to cut cost further.

This is not a lock, it's a latch. It's a cheap "security theater" object to deter theft, not a lock. If you're cheap and whatever you're securing with this isn't worth a lot, it's useful to keep honest people honest, which is all a lock is meant to do, but it's definitely not a serious security device and shouldn't be used as one.
"They gave it a core that is very easy to pick, they gave it a locking mechanism that can be easily bypassed, it literally falls apart, it smells so bad it's making my eyes water, and it's made out of very, very thin materials." But other than that, it's perfect, right? I mean, it's red, and all thieves know to stay away from red because red means danger. Maybe they figured the smell alone would be enough of a deterrent. Honestly, I've watched several of your videos over the past few days, and it's been a real eye-opener. What layperson would have thought the "security" industry was making basically useless products and marketing them as "security" devices?
Having worked in the security industry i can tell you most people wouldn't know good security if it popped out of a hole in the ground and bit them in the ass, but boy do they know how to hire talented propagandists to market their shit. And that's just the people actually making decisions in the industry itself, not even talking about lay people outside of it
In Switzerland the Police recommends investing 10% of a bikes value in the bike lock. this 3$ lock seems adequate for a bike worth 30$ and not a penny more.
@@miru99de a $2000 bike will get stolen if it's left outside for too long. Bcs its so expensive it's probably your mountain bike or your road bike. Get another cheap bike for your daily so you don't have to leave that thing unattended ever.
We will all see him up on top of the pentagon on in 2021 sticking the pick him and bosnian bill made into the ether muttering "...clicl out of 6, nothing on one, two is binding..." All in the hopes to unlock the world
The fact that it doesn't open that easily probably tricks people into thinking it has at least some pick resistance. But nonetheless the fumes coming from it probably repel a lot of customers. But now that i think about it, the piece of metal that locks the shackle looks so thin that with the assistance of tools you can probably break it and just pull it out.
Funny story…last summer I found my old bike at my parents garage and It happened to still have an old bike lock around the frame which I didn’t have the key to. But after watching all these videos on how cheap locks are made I figured I just try to stick in a screwdriver and see if I can manage to open it. Surely enough after sticking a screwdriver and turning it slightly the lock just fell apart :) Special thanks and shout-out to BosnianBill for that one :)
Someone tried that to my lock at school once. Came out of class to see my lock completely bent and almost broken. I never used that type of lock again.
Since this lock is only $3 you can easily get 15 locks for the same price a good one costs and if you lock up your bike with 15 locks I think you should be ok.
Marketing 1-0-1 if you have a shit product just label it '' the best product ever'' and put a low price, there are always idiots cheap enough to fool. Its sad but unfortunately true.
Hey lsl, Im going through a rough patch in my life but your videos never fail to make me smile and instill me a little knowledge as well. Keep up the good work, man!
Thieves see a U lock and don’t even try. Honestly, you don’t even have to lock it onto a bike to scare people away. You can, in most places (excluding high crime areas), just make it sorta look like it’s locked onto the seat and they don’t steal it. They carry bolt cutters, not lock picks and shims
@@Guythatyoudontknow I most people use cable locks, they are so much more convenient. Also, everything you said contradicts with my knowledge of bike thefts, which have happened to me twice, and many others I know, in high crime areas. I have, during a few times where I was sprinting to my destination, just set the lock to where it looked sorta locked up in the middle of various “sketchy” downtown areas, and it’s never been stolen
@@AFN2750 I’m not saying it’s an ineffective deterrent most of the time for relatively short amounts of time (which is to say it deters thieves who only possess a bolt cutter), I’m just saying it’s basically a bare minimum sort of deal for a good bike I also see posts every day for stolen bikes in local FB bike groups, and most of them have ulocks, so I’m glad your experience with them has not disappointed you thus far
You are the dumbest person ever if u beleive that ffs u locks are probably the easiest locks ever to open ... 2 belts of a hammer every single time without a fail im after breaking 100's of u locks so dnt be so stupid in all yur life cos if u think that bike thiefs will see a u lock and just walk away your very wrong my friend ffs🤣🤦🏻♂🥱🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
I hate to go against the grain here, but that's not a bad value for $3. Please show me a better bike lock for the same price. It would serve the purpose of deterring someone looking for a completely unlocked bike. Of course you should get a proper lock, but if your bike is only worth $20 it's better than nothing...
So Ive watched some of the older videos last hour, and I really had some laughs about the sarcasm that pops out from time to time - absolutely great XDXDXD
Actually, I think LPL just convinced me that this lock is a great deal. It's only $3. For $3 you get a bike lock that will make it LOOK like your bike is secured which will deter most people from bothering. Only a thief with enough knowledge/determination to pick it, bring bolt cutters or know enough to shim it would bother. So if you're cheap and reluctant to buy a serious lock, why not get this? It's a visual deterrent. It's kind of like the Coral Snake approach. The Coral Snake is venomous but several snakes have evolved similar colors and looks and benefit from potential predators mistaking them for Coral snakes. This bike lock is not venemous, but it looks like it to those who don't know better.
True. For a small town or suburban area. Even at a college, if your college is fairly safe, this is better than those combination cable locks for $10 that look like they can be cut with scissors. Even those locks work fine for those areas as long as your bike isnt very flashy. That said, unless your bike is an absolute piece of junk, spend at least $15 on a nicer U lock. Walmart has plenty of options from Bell and Kyrptonite. (Still not great, see LPL 735 and 455)
I am reminded of the old University of Pennsylvania TV show that pitted a bunch of archaeologists and related experts against an unknown archaeological object. The lead in from the "offstage voice" was "What in the world?" in a slow, deep, and spooky voice. I imagine the same voice saying: "The worst lock in the world."
I'd like to think of myself as an honest person. But when i see locks this bad, i feel the urge to do something. Break it, bypass it, whatever. Not to be malicious, just to prove a point. Still. Locks like this one are so bad, it tempts the honest person who wouldn't have been interested in the first place
I figure for three dollars it's value is purely in deterrence value. The same as non-functional camera shells. 3 dollar piece of plastic, your average robber is slightly less likely to break into your house because it looks like it has a camera.
Yeah it's more of a psychological thing. I don't know the numbers, but I would bet money that even the cheapest lock in the world would deter potential theft significantly
@@garywilliams6124 To be perfectly honest an expensive is going to get stolen no matter what lock you use, if you leave it outside because you used bike to commute, go to library etc. As the LPL mentions, you should always carry the bike or leave it under someone's surveillance unless you're riding the walbike and the likes. At that point anything that remotely resembles a lock would stop people.
@@garywilliams6124 Most security measures are psychological. It's almost impossible to create ACTUAL security, just various levels of temporary deterrence. How thorough that deterrence has to be depends on who you expect to be trying to take your stuff. Even a really cheap lock will put off most casual, opportunistic thieves. A fairly solid one might put off a more professional thief. But probably only because there's an easier target nearby... But I doubt you'll stop anyone taking your stuff with any kind of lock or other security device, no matter how good it is. Because it's still not good enough...
yes LPL should design and build a lock that he has a hard time breaking into ... then market it ... people would buy it for sure ... and instead of showing how crap current manufacturing is ... he can show what QUALITY means
His $ per time invested ratio is probably better spent just taking these videos. Though I'm sure any form of partnership or sponsorship would work great for both of them, but possibly undermine his credibility.
They're called dollar stores because the prices are in even dollar amounts (e.g. $5.00 instead of $4.99). Which is silly when you think about it, considering that sales tax is still a thing, and a lot of items are round but not dollar amounts, e.g. $1.50
Soon as you asked "what can you do to a spring loaded piece of metal?" i immediately said SHIM IT! and when you concurred it I realized I've learned so much watching your videos in the past few months. You are a great teacher. Love your vids.
I bought a bike a little while ago second-hand, and the previous owner wanted to be kind and threw in this exact lock, as well as a chain and . . . a particularly bad masterlock padlock. I politely accepted them, (the chain is actually really thick and quality), but yeesh, wonder how she never got it stolen on her all these years. Any lock you can open by standing next to the bike, hauling on the lock lightly, and banging with your knee just seems completely pointless. The masterlock she included was nice and heavy and "quality" feeling in the sense that heavy = quality to many people's minds, but it, too, opens with a sharp rap while pulling on the shackle.
@@BenjaminGoose Ottolock is another company that makes bicycle locks and they are even worse than this company. I would recommend watching LPL's video on them it's so embarrassing
I used to know a professional bike thief who preferred taking bikes that used "Krypton" locks because they were so easy to get off. But he didn't pick them, that took too long. He would just walk up to the nearest BMW [they were everywhere in those days and most people didn't lock the trunks] take out the jack and would place it between the U and crank it open. Ping. 4 turns of the crank and the "hardened" steel just popped open. 30 seconds and on his way.
I was in uniform and working yesterday, and went to the ACE Hardware in town to find a good padlock. Another guy was also there trying to find a Master. While we were both waiting I mentioned to him that Masters are a "beginning pickers" lock. He told me as long as he had something that took at least a key or combination, his insurance company would replace his boat no matter what. After watching this video, I think he made a great choice between the Master 40mm plastic and this piece of junk!
LockPickingLawyer I do wonder how many theives there are that pick/bypass/saw locks VS theives that are simple opertunists stealing unlocked stuff and thieves that go around with angle grinders.
@@petermichaelgreen It's definitely interesting to consider since so many people end up committing crimes for so many different reasons. Although it's just so convenient to paint them all the same, there is a difference between a big money career criminal, gang related planned thefts/burglaries, a petty opportunist street thief, and even a homeless person trying to make it to tomorrow. While obviously there's little that can be said to justify crime - as an example, in heavy snow deep wilderness areas, there's typically a laws that make it legal to break into a cabin, house, remote shelter, etc. should anyone be lost out in the middle of nowhere, a legitimate life or death situation(obviously them breaking in, eating some food and taking some fuel or something is significantly different than the aforementioned 'common criminals') - this is still a very complex and layered aspect of society, one that most prefer to slap a generic one-size-fits-all 'bad person' label on it, then shove it in a closet to be ignored after the smallest amount of logic has been invested. It would certainly be quite interesting to see some kind of research into this, seeing how it breaks down, but it isn't like anything like this will be funded anytime soon - just shove it in the back of the closet and ignore it
just got an add for a decked truck storage lock....ive seen enough of LPL to safely assume the lock on that thing is garbage and can be picked faster than it takes to order number 3 with a coke and waffle fries and an apple pie
I have a coinbox that I could pick with a pair of scissors. I am not some kind of lockpicking master, I just jammed the blade inside after losing my key and it opened...
"This is the lock picking lawyer, and today we are going to pick my enemies' lock, break in, and light their furniture on fire" "As you can see i already tried this before the video, hence the dead body on the floor"
@@CroissantMoon "Now the first issue that we see is just this thin, flimsy body to the whole thing. I was able to use this thin shim *holds up knife* to bypass the entire rib system and just get immediate access to the interior"
By watching you and bill over the last year I am terrified about any lock I see storing anything. I even told my company what junk they are buying. They dont listen btw.
If it gives you any comfort, know that picking is a skill that not many people have the patience to master. Once you get above the bottom shelf crappy locks, it takes an uncommon level of skill to reliably pop locks within a practical time frame.
yeah my dad came and wanted to switch the basement padlock that i bought on a budget has ball bearings to hold the shackle lots of meat not hard metal and butter core in it for a Chinese cast iron spring loaded 3$ potato i think Bill made a video on how to bypass them with a knife even why ball bearing locks are hard to use WELL SHIT i suppose ignorance is bliss
Seeing both crime gangs and crackheads in action, literally none of them lockpick and always go for the brute force method because most of the time its quicker. They use a screwdriver and a hammer to break into shit. Same thing they did with my car, they just shoved a screwdriver into the lock and hammer it once and it destroyed the lock, but thankfully my mitsubishi wouldn't unlock when the lock got broken and I managed to catch them in the act.
Thanks bro! because I have the same lock with the same keys you have in the video and i have forgotten my bicycle lock keys and thought that that was the end of me but luckily i was looking on ways how to pick a similar lock to the one (1) i have and i saw this video on how to pick a bicycle lock similar to mine and when i saw how to pick it, I couldn't belive my eyes! Thank you soo much bro for helping me out. Now i don't have to worry about lock situations any more, because i have learnt a thing or (two) on how to pick a bicycle lock like mines. Thank you very much bro! Keep up the good work😉😉
