From Guy Miner: In case you didn’t already know - I’m beyond excited about my upcoming trip to Africa. I’ve already showcased load development for my 30-06 and threading the same rifle for a suppressor, but I’m also taking another rifle, a Ruger Number One 375 H&H.

@Who_Tee_Who I know you've filmed shooting larger... but the .375H&H is 'so missing' from your great YT collection! This caliber is the original racehorse stallion that sired so many household caliber offspring - probably the most that don belts and strut their stuff! Just like "Who's Ya Daddy?!" :)

Guys, I'm not a rich man. I saved for years for this African hunt. Sold my motorcycle. Sold a nice road bicycle. Sold some nice guns. Did some odd-jobs here and there for folks... Eventually it added up to an African Plains Game hunt... You can do it too.

Guy I please take pictures of the performance of the CX bullet. I just returned from South Africa using 178gr ELD-X out of 30-06 and 300 H&H. All the animals died, but the PH was not happy when the bullet upset violently and didn't get pass-throughs...Granted we went 9 of 9 with 2 animals being sppine shot and needing follow ups.. We had an in-depth discussion on monolithic bullets and his reasons for chooing them over others.

I'm a SA farmer, hunting with the same setup of Ruger no.1 and 375HH...very versitile and abselutely adequate. Single shot was never a problem. I never used the 260gr bullets, but groupings with the 270gr Hornady Interlock are very good, using our local Somchem S335 or S341 powder. For longer shots in savannah open country up to 400m, the Peregrine 230gr copper bullet does amazing work. The No.1 is an excellent platform for walk & stalk hunting giving the comfort of a shorter, portable rifle with a 24" barrel. It really comes to its right in semi-bush country on a moving target. A quick snap- shot with a lower powerd mildot scope is so easy and deadly. Very, nice video! Please come visit South Africa again, we love all hunters and we are fortunate to have some amazing animals and hunting venues.

Will Stokes here. I am a South African who hunts at every opportunity. I have hunted with the 375 H&H over the years and love the caliber. I have been reloading since 1981 and started with the 45 ACP, 9mm Luger and 357 Mag doing combat shooting. I then progressed to to rifles and load from the 223 to the 375. My sons gave me a buffalo hunt for my 70 th birthday . I used a 350 gr Rhino bullet loaded with 68 gr of Vihtavouri N550 powder at a velocity of 2300 f/s and 4000 ft pounds of energy. The shot was side on and penetrated the heart and we found the bullet under the skin on the opposite side . Expansion was excellent at 3/4 of an inch with a retained weight of 342 grains. The Rhino bullets are made here with excellent results on the big 5.

For a South African plains game hunt the 375 H&H is a great choice. I use 260 grain Nosler Accubonds for up to 500 yards, and 300 grain Swift A-Frames for bigger game (at close range).

The 375 and the 9.3X62 are very popular here in SA. Don't worry, the PH will have a backup rifle (or two, or three,...) if you should need one. Enjoy the trip! Edit: just bring some components along with you as you will find RL-15 here in SA.

I had a CZ about 40 years ago, extremely accurate. I loaded the 300 gr Sierra bullet, I forget the powder charge but the recoil was almost enough to detach a retina. A threaded muzzle with a good brake would have been nice but since it didn’t have that it went away a long time ago.

Good luck on your trip Guy! I actually just recently acquired a custom built Rem 700 chambered in a wildcat 30x375 M&R. It’s a 375 H&H parent case resized and necked down to 30cal. I’m brand new to reloading so I’m not sure when I’ll be confident and ready enough to load for it.

WARNING! Africa is highly addictive! Lucky enough to have been several times. Had to miss the last couple of years due to Covid. I only take the 375 H&H. A good 300 grain bullet (Swift A-frame, Barnes TSX, etc.) works for most everything if it’s accurate in your rifle. I’ve used 235, 250, and 300 grain with success, but the 300 is by far the most universal! Best of luck on your grand Africa adventure! My 300 Barnes TSX load is R-15 1 grain below Barnes’s maximum screaming along at 2,655 fps. Accuracy is 3 shots in 1/2” consistently at 100 m. Took antelope from duiker to eland as well as cape buffalo. My 250 grain Barnes TTSX ahead of CFE223 is running at 2,827 fps and will cluster 3 shots at the 100 m range consistently. It has taken croc, sable, warthog, impala, black wildebeest, gemsbock, etc. My 235 grain Barnes TSX suggested to me by my outfitter for lion. It worked, but I will go back to a softer 300 if I shoot another lion. It too was very accurate ahead of R-15 and screaming at 3,038 fps. I have been accused of only firing 1 shot at 100 m and saying it was 3, but it was 3 shots all in almost the same hole! My rifle is an MRC stainless with synthetic stock made two years before they sold out then closed.

I purchased a second hand Remington 700 BDL Safari Grade in .375 H&H, back in about 1985. It was for a grizzly hunt in north central BC back when you could still do that. I worked up a load using 300 Gr. Nosler Partitions and a certain amount of IMR 4350. It gave both excellent accuracy and velocity, not to mention results. So far, I haven't seen any need to work up another load.

My favorite cartridge of all time! It's manageable recoil and bullets available in multiple weights makes it applicable in so many different situations. I recently used my 375 h&h for a December whitetail freezer filler hunt, I found I have way less meat damage when I use the 375 h&h vs my 7mm rem mag

Its all about bullet selection. If you use some cheap core locks or eldx its going to be more than the bullet can handle. A good bonded bullet wont cause nearly the damage.

I always here about meat damage and loss with the big hitters like 375HH and .45-70, so much so that my grandfather won’t even allow me to use either on his land for whitetail. Yet from people that actually use them (or say they do) the consensus is usually that the meat loss is far less than even .243

Ruger guide gun; .375 Ruger, 20" threaded barrel, main load is 250 grain Barnes TTSX/ 270 grain Barnes LRX depending on what groups better. Working on low velocity loads for whitetail, mimics the .375 Winchester using Lyman data. Also working on two Speer loads, a 235 grain hot-cor and 270 grain boat-tail. Main purpose is a once-in-a-lifetime hunt in Alaska for moose/bear but making loads for use on any medium to dangerous game.

Hello Guy. Good luck on your trip to South Africa. Looking forward to seeing some results when you return. A few years back I bought a 375 H&H from McMillan. It is the last 375 H&H they built. It is on their G30 action. I often travel to South Africa and have hunted there a few times. The person I work with in South Africa recommended a 375 H&H and that is why I bought it. In this video you mentioned that you would like to take a bolt action 375 H&H and take it out to 600 yards. I would be happy to bring it up to WA and let you shoot it at those distances. I have worked up several accurate loads that I think would work well. If that was ever an option please let me know. It would be a real honor for me to visit and have you shoot my rifle.

@@guyminer3168 Yes, the 260AB did the job - first shot was forward into the front shoulder, which it shattered - moose was still hobbling on 3 legs - put a 2nd into the boiler room and he face planted - neither exited, which seemed a little odd, but I would use them again; I plan on testing 250 TTSX, as I like to punch two holes and Barnes always seem to do just that - moose fed my family and friends for 2 years

I hope you have a great trip Guy. My father and my uncle went to SA back in around 2010. When they got back my father bought a 35 Whelen which was supposed to be for the next trip. He said that there was a PH there who swore by them. He said the trajectory is nearly exactly the same as the 30-06, but the muzzle energy is very close to a 375H&H or basically the same as the 9.3x62.. This meant although it isn't legal in most places for dangerous game, if you are hunting plain game and someone's life comes into danger you had enough power on hand to stop anything. I've kept it for my one gun for large animals.

I only shoot paper and squirrels on occasion. I visited that rifle every week or so for a while until it finally sold. Someone got for a great price, I’m sure. Do not shoot eland with a 30 06 ! I’ve used my 375 h&h for the past 50 years and have never required another rifle. My rifle was made by Holland in 1914 for my grand father. In my younger days I used the leaf sights and have shot large antelopes out to 400 yards , but with Father Time catching up with me I now use a Zeiss 6x42 scope. For following up dangerous game one feels safer with a 520grain 458 win mag double barrel and for this purpose I use my over and under Ferlach 458 win mag. The only 375 bullets to steer clear of , are the old 235 grain Kynoch rounds.

I love the .375 H&H magnum and I own a Blaser R93 in that caliber since 2010. It's a very versatile caliber and I have hunted animals with it from hares to elephant. I reload it with several powders, depending weight of bullets. I like Vihtavuori N150 powder with 300 gr bullets (Degol Bullets and CEB Safaris Solid ) and Reload Swiss 52 for Nosler Partition 260 gr. I also reloaded Nosler Accubond 260 gr with RS52 and now with RS60 but I'm not able to reach the same velocity than the Nosler Partition 260. I get 2624 f/s with the Accubond while, without any supression, I get 2820 f/s with the Partition. For Fun, I also reloaded Hornady Interlock 300 gr with Reload Swiss 60 and I got 2657 f/s...starts to kick but no problem at all.

30 years ago, I wanted to buy a Ruger #1, because they are beautiful(!). Even though I'm not a hunter, I figured if I was going to buy a single-shot, I might as well buy a cannon. I settled on a #1-H Tropical in .375 H+H. Even if I did started to hunt, it's big enough for anything in the western hemisphere. Just messing around, I fell in love with the cartridge! 😊 For the last 15 or so years I've had a CZ 550 Safari Mag in the same caliber on my "wish list," but life got in the way. About three years ago, I went to my favorite gun shop to order one... and their suppliers did not even catalog them anymore. I came to find out CZ discontinued the entire 550 line in 2020. 😢 I've been looking since... and only just recently found one (and won it) at auction! 😂

Another old jarhead here who's been shooting .25-06 for around 40 years. i shoot Barnes 235 and 300 grain in my 375 H&H. Even though in modern day Africa it's considered a "minimum" caliber you should realize 1912 wasn't too long after an old hunter named Bell was shooting lions and elephants by the dozens with a 6,5x54 MS. It's said a solid 160 gr 6.5 bullet would shoot through two meters of oak and it for sure shot through many elephant skulls. I bought my 1st 375 after reading one of my heroes, Elmer Keith, expound on the attributes of the 375. Being primarily a meat hunter I especially liked Elmer's comment about being able to eat right up to the bullet hole with the 375. Have a great hunt and take plenty of pictures for those of us who will never make that trip! My 700 Safari is very accurate although my days at Paradise Island probably helped also

Looking forward to hearing the story. I'm not shooting a .375 H&H but did just buy my "Africa Gun" which is a .375 Ruger Mossberg Patriot bolt action rifle. Kick is pretty stout in the 7 pound rifle, but I hadn't loaded for it yet. I'm currently working up a load using Ramshot "Big Game" powder for it and the new 250 gr. CX bullet from Hornady. I wasn't able to find unloaded brass, so I bought a couple boxes of Hornady DGS loaded ammo and paid a whopping $198 for two boxes. Being limited to 40 brass at the moment means my shoulder gets to learn to deal with the kick using the 300 gr. solids for starters, but it's still not as bad as my 12 ga with Brenneke KO slugs in a 5 pound shotgun. Please put up some info on the outfitter you are using and locations you'll be hunting; when you can. ;)

375H&H, I did find one used at the auktion side "egun" there is absolutly every thing on the market , I did buy my Drilling Johann Fanzoy, and my Krieghof double rifle cal 375H%H. I payed USD 3600, and suprpisingly it has factory new barrells. I have hunted a lot with it, I do remember one hunt, I got the stand very close to the border, a Moose come very close to me, about 15 meters, I did shot the under barrel first, the Moose did not stop, I fiered the upper barrel and it fell down some 10 meters on the wrong side of the border. A mobilecall to the landowner and the moose was given to us. It is very suprisingly soft recoil, it is notthe kick like 300 WM, it is more a slow punsh, and best of all it shoot fantastic with two holes like an 8 at 100 meters.

Very cool. I also own a ruger #1 cambered in 375 h&h. I absolutely love that rifle. When it was my father's, he took several large bull elk with it. He never needed more than one round per animal. He is also a big fan of the 260gr accubond. I have killed two bears with it, but I prefer the 300gr Barnes X bullet, loaded by Vortex. The accubond, I would guess probably has a better bullet coefficient, but I like that rapid expansion of the hollow point style partition frame of the X bullet. On the very short blood trails of both of my bears, it was more like walking the red carpet. Anyways, thanks for the video, and hope you have a great trip to Africa.
