Welcome to Ron Spomer Outdoors! Hello, everyone. I'd like to tell you a story about a mule deer hunt. A Texas mule deer hunt to famous West Texas. This is desert country, and I was fortunate to have been invited by Remington Ammunition to test out a new prototype type of bullet, the Remington CuT Bullet, that they're going to be releasing. In fact, I think they're going to release it at the start of the shot show this year.

Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

I got to visit Big Bend National Park back in the 90's. That is some of the harshest most beautiful and desolate property in the West. The Apache hunted right there.👍 Thanks Ron.

Texas looks like the place to be for deer. About 75% of Colorado has large numbers of deer with CWD. That makes their meat untrustworthy.

I was really impressed using the new core lock tipped 165 gr 30-06 ammo it has very consistent fps and just as accurate as higher end offerings. I took a large Michigan doe dressed weight at 142lbs with it this pasted November 175 yards quartering too, shot placement was just in front of her left shoulder and the bullet stopped just behind the last rib of the opposite side under the hide and i was very happy to see a perfect mushroom waiting for the display case i planned on making for it, weight retention was amazing at 154gr. I will definitely give the all Cooper Remington Cut a good hard look....but I'm still not liking the parent company's currently business objective. It's a damn shame to have a company that builds ammo and other items be sold to a foreign company regardless of the manufacturing location staying here or not.

I'd like to see some different bullet offerings. 150 grains in copper is a little light for things like elk. i would love to see a 168 or 175 grain option. For now, I think I'll stick to the core locked tipped in 180. I've also had really great accuracy and performance with them.

Congrats to all. New Bullet looks a whole lot like the Hornady CX with a Green Tip... Surely Remington wouldn't do that...n Not give Hornady a pug. Could also be a different alloy but same profile.

Seems like the hornady CX bullet. Remington has done it in the past with the accutip which was just a sst bullet and their new core lokt tipped bullet which Is also a hornady sst bullet with a green tip. What makes me think that is that when you pull the bullet it has the exact same profile and if you cross section it you'll see the hornady interlock and when you compare the two side by side when both are cross sectioned they are identical

So Ron , how do the New Remington Copper , Poly Tip , bullets compare to the Remington Core Locts ? I shoot a Ruger M77 7mm mag . And it prefers the Core Locts over several that I have tried . Just curious to know ?
@RonSpomerOutdoors
@RonSpomerOutdoors 8 месяцев назад
Mark, I find the CuT and coppers like it retain more weight than Core-Lokts and similar cup-and-core bullets, expand as reliably but more consistently (same expansion, rarely mangled) and generally shoot through the other side (deeper penetration) to leave a 2nd hole for blood trailing. Chest-shot deer tend to run 20 to 100 yards before expiring from blood loss.

They probably walk uphill in the real early morning to the top of the ridge due to the downward thermal wind pull too. And when it switches they’re nearby the thermal tunnel, and bed in that on the other side. A buck is a buck weather in Illinois or Texas I’d say!

Great Video! Reminds me of hunting the southeast quadrant of Colorado, south of Cheyenne Wells. Its great Mule deer and Pronghorn country. Most of it is private land. Up until 20 years ago it was easy to gain access by simply asking the rancher/farmer for permission. Recently, private "Hunt Clubs" have begun leasing the land making it almost impossible to find unleased land worth hunting. That's another discussion for another day. We now hunt northeast Colorado on private lands under different circumstances. And yes. all of the grazing lands have prickly pear and cholla cactus along with spikey yucca and sand burrs. Fun times! Most shots are between 150 to 300 yards. I use a 200 yard zero which fits my old reliable 270 Winchester. Its stoked with 130 grain Speer "Grand Slam" bullets over 57 grains of IMR 4831 powder. We like to hunt early, before the infamous high plains winds begin to blow. Driving the section roads and accessible farm roads, we scout with binocs. Hunting deer is different than Pronghorn. Once we spot white butts or antlers, we figure out how to make a stalk to put us within ethical range for shooting. After the winds begin, we walk the edges of dry creek beds - arroyos, attempting to surprise deer who are bedded down, or jump shoot them if they spot us first. Pronghorn....another story for another day!

Ron Do you have access to anyone at Remington who might be able to tell us if those bullets will be available to us handloaders? They look like they would work as well as the Barnes and Hornadys that I currently load and my be priced a little more reasonably. Reloading components most certainly are not the saving that they were in years past. Hoping for an answer from you Ron. Thanks

Vista, who owns Federal ammo, CCI and a whole conglomeration of other brands purchased Remington ammo out of the Remington bankruptcy. Vista is now selling the ammo division to a Czech billionaire and thus putting 2 of the 3 largest ammo manufacturers into foreign hands.

Ron. You said, “you’re never going to get as high a BC out of a copper bullet as a lead core bullet of the same weight.” Hornady’s 30 cal. 180 grain CX bullet has a BC of .469. Their 180 grain Interlock BTSP has a BC of .452. While it’s true that the their 180 grain SST is slightly higher, at .480, you’re not making sense. Stick with the hunting stories, which I enjoy.
@michaelcolthart4006
@michaelcolthart4006 8 месяцев назад
Bullet shape affects BC….the SST and CX are comparable shapes whereas the BTSP is not. You literally proved his point.
@orr89rocz
@orr89rocz 8 месяцев назад
His point is correct. When both are Optimized for high bc, a copper bullet will not get the same bc as a lead core copper jacket design. Copper of same weight ends up being much longer requiring faster twist and wont seat the same in the case. Plus the shape/form of the bullet with the drive bands on copper reduce bc potential
@scottstruif3939
@scottstruif3939 8 месяцев назад
@@orr89rocz true, but Ron has all kinds of experience shooting game. He could tell us about how different bullets performed when they struck game. Minor differences in BC on spreadsheets gets old.
