Testing the Underwood Xtreme Defender and the Inceptor ARX through the 2.75" Ruger LCP2 and the 3.25" Glock 42 through heavy clothing and into calibrated homemade ballistic gel and Clear Ballistics. Do these non-expanding defensive rounds perform as well, or better than, regular hollow points? Watch for the results of our comparison.

Wonderful video. Been waiting, for years, for a no BS, no yak-yak, comparison of the "solid spinners" with conventional self defense 380 rounds........that INCLUDED energy levels. THIS IS IT !! Congratulations, guys............keep up the good work. [ have carried the ARX in my Taurus 738 for years......and now in my LCP Max. Feel quite confident with them, especially after these analyses ] ........and...........much less felt recoil..........

Thanks. That was the goal on this vid - 'apples to apples' comparison. Granted it came out a bit longer than I wanted. Trying to improve with each vid.

That "un" felt recoil can really sneak up on a shooter

ARX wouldn't run thru my Ruger security 380. I tried 15 rounds and none even moved the slide back. I have ran over 20 different types of ammo with no issue! Underwood extreme defender worked great!

Nice comparison video. When I carry a 380 its an LCPII with the +P Underwood Extreme Defender. This test looks good for both non-expanding loads tested so I see no reson to change what I'm using.

Excellent Video....Thanks !! Looks to me like it's going to be Xtreme Defenders and Arx for my Sig P365-380

Something to add for you. Just did my own accuracy test between the ARX and the extreme defender, 7-10 yards. Out of my P365-380 both rounds group phenomenal but the ARX groups to the left of my point of aim. The Underwood is dead on with all my other range ammo. I think this is a big deal considering that your range ammo and your defense ammo should group relatively the same. Example, G-d forbid you get into a defense scenario you might have to double or triple tap in a hurry. That will usually result in a right handed shooter pulling to the left. If your defense ammo already hits to the left you may not get a good center mass shot, forget a head shot altogether!

Solid reminder to practice with what you plan to carry! Good reminder for everyone

I agree I believe it has something to do with the direction of the flutes on extreme defenders they are straight down but the inceptors are directional if that makes sense 😆 but that causes them to spiral towards the left

The average male chest is 11.47" "thick." Therefore IMO setting 12" as the ideal penetration standard is a tradeoff with an array of probabilities. The FBI standard was sort of based on the worst case... shooting through the right side to hit the heart. Obviously there are a wide variety of tissues: bone, cartilages, muscle, blood vessels, organs, etc. Generally. the brain and the heart are lethal shots. Some others are leaks leading to significant blood loss. Since the brain is protected by bone, the better choice might be through the nose/eyes to hit the brain. There are targets that show all the organs, etc. Therefore the ideal training would be with those versus the traditional bullseye, etc. Realizing no matter where you get hit, it's going to hurt.

There is noticeable less recoil in the ARX imo, I just shot both today.

I have some of the ARX and extreme defenders. The extreme defender + p is my 380 carry round in 380. Federal HST + p in 9 mm.
@NorthwoodsTesting
@NorthwoodsTesting Год назад
I tend to prefer standard pressure rounds. I think any HST in 9mm is an excellent choice. I prefer the 124 grain in the short barrel 9's.

Hollow point and fluted are equally effective, IF the HP changes shape, as intended. Sometimes they don't. Fluted doesn't have to change.

Those nice wound channels sort of look the same. Pretty cool. Underwood, I mean.

Excellent review and explanation! Well worth the time. I especially applaud the comparison of organic gel versus "clear ballistic gel!" Organic gel is the one to better show the wound track, and for what it is worth, shooting in the shade really works better to see it, and you took the time for us to really look at those wound damages. To my eye the Underwood did better! And the velocity of the Sig ammo was typically disappointing! Very useful test!..............................elsullo

I carry the Xtreme Defenders in my P3AT. They're worth the extra price to me for the additional energy and because I'm not going to cheap out on my defensive ammo. I'd also be curious to see how the polymer/copper Inceptors hold up against hard barriers like wood and steel. The XDs perform very well even after passing through windshields (it's realistic that an attacker may try to hit me or someone else with a car).

Not good

Well I don't think the ARXs are 'cheaping out' but I see your point. I always prefer to practice with my carry load and cost for me is a concern. When 7 rounds approach $10 it adds up fast. Oh, and I want to know why someone wants to hit you with their car and yet maybe I don't....
@rickh9396
@rickh9396 Год назад
@@NorthwoodsTesting Maybe a poor choice of words on my part, just trying to be brief. My point is that the extra energy in what is a somewhat anemic round is well worth the added cost to me. (I understand that other people may be more cost sensitive and I was only talking about my own situation.) I practice with them occasionally (a magazine every few months), just to make sure they still feed properly and to verify their point of impact hasn't changed relative to the sights. I've seen plenty of videos on Active Self Protection of defenders shooting into cars or from cars to know it's a possibility worth considering.

What is the felt recoil like, on these two rounds, compared with heavier (e.g. 95 to 99 grain) 380 defensive rounds?
@NorthwoodsTesting
@NorthwoodsTesting 8 месяцев назад
The size/weight of both the G42 and LCP2 are small enough most rounds are a little snappy, but to me still feel like a 9mm-lite.

Interesting tests. However, from prior videos on the .380, it's my understanding that Underwood's Xtreme Penetrator is the best performer. The XD's are better for 9mm, but for .380, the XP's seem to be better because a .380 needs a bit more oomph.
@NorthwoodsTesting
@NorthwoodsTesting 11 месяцев назад
I can see that argument. Too cost prohibitive for me though to actually practice much with those rounds. I am more than satisfied with the ARX in the short barrel (2.75") and more traditional HP rounds in the G42 and above (3.25"+).

Less recoil with lighter weight ammo? Ruger vs Glock
@NorthwoodsTesting
@NorthwoodsTesting Год назад
Honestly I don't notice much difference in the 380 felt recoil. There's more to hold onto with the Glock as the LCP2 is basically held by just 2 fingers.

This is a great test because it shows the Clear gel is not real, but your homemade is lilke the FBI gel, more flid like human flesh. More expensive showing the 380 ACP is adequate. Unederwood Xtreme Defender is best & adequate. 9 is better if one can hide it. LCP Max: adequate & better than not carrying.

Their is a severe difference in cost. Copper bullets that have to be cut on a C&C machine are much more expensive than a bullet that is made through injection molding polymer and copper particles. Great test.
