I have had 2 Cadillac STS's. They both had the Northstar V-8. They were nice and fast. My Buick Park Avenue Ultra is a nice car, though. It has a little less power than the Cadillacs did, but overall I am pleased with it. I got it about a month ago for a good price and have done several repairs to restore the engine. I think the 3800 is a great engine and I appreciate your post to support our 3800 community.

Thank you for the video! The 3800 engine is very dear to me. Buick did a spectacular job with that engine and the engineers should feel proud.

This motor is a boss 302 that Buick chopped two cylinders off,and the legend was born,I've worked on 65 buicks and they were also used in jeeps the Buick Reatta had a pretty cool series two I currently have a 99 Bonneville. SLE. These motors are bullet proof.

+mrromantimothy are you saying regal's 3800 II is/was a boss 302?
@mrromantimothy
@mrromantimothy 8 лет назад
+jw Keith by boss I meant a racing motor that met the SCCA's maximum 305 cid requirements, the Buick small block V8 and Rover V8 was all aluminum and would easily smoke a ford boss, the 3800 is an all new motor but it shares a lot of the characteristics of the odd fire buick 215'

The 3800 was a descendant of the old fireball v8 from the sixties. You are correct about the 2 cylinders being chopped off, thus it became the fireball v6. It's amazing what over 50 years of development can do for a not so great engine, as the 3800 became pure Gold.

If you add a throttle body spacer you are changing the functional length of the intake runners, which retunes the engine somewhat. It should probably be tuned to accomodate that. In general longer runners mean more horsepower, and shorter runners mean more torque. The 3800 has more torque than it knows what to do with on account of it's displacement, so this might be a good mod but it depends on how much explore the top end of the rev band. Hope that helps. Great video.

In the early days of 3800's SLP had a GTX package for the Grand Prix and a GSX package for the Regal. The top package was the Stage 3 but it wasnt too special. 3.5 inch pulley,High flow mufflers, 180 degree Thermostat, Intake and Hypertech tuning. Nothing major nowadays there are way more mods available. Your car with the mods you listed will need a tune too reach your cars potential. It'll have way more then 260hp/300torque

Nice video man. One of the first mod I did was to trash the front exhaust manifold with a Plog from ZZP. Excluding the Ubend the front exhaust manifold is the most restrictive part on the Regals. Went with the 72mm high flow TB from ZZP, 3in catless DP and Intense PCM, CAI, running a 3.5 pulley now just to fight KR along with AL 104 and 180 Tstat. I had to take out the solid dogbones just too much vibration for me at idle and the AC on. 10.3 mm ZZP wires and coil packs. Like you said its not the fastest regal on youtube but from 60-100 its fast enough for me...Happy modding

Hey I know this is an ancient RU-vid comment but i wanted to ask you a quick question about your regal. I heard regals have the same kinda KR tendencies that Bonneville have, which is what I have. Do you think a new DP, throttle body and cold air intake from ZZP would support a 3.5 inch pulley without to much KR?
@jeans1889
@jeans1889 7 лет назад
D Clark just go to zzp and look at the stage one kit. then do that. as far as I know those are the best supporting mods for a smaller pully
@Thom1883
@Thom1883 7 лет назад
If you're just starting to mod your 3800SC car i would not get a bigger Throttle body just yet, they are a good mod but wait till you start making more boost and have a good supporting mod platform. After all that i would then get a bigger throttle body.
@MegaZombie101
@MegaZombie101 7 лет назад
Really? Why is that exactly? I've read that a bigger throttle body is a good mod to do before you drop pulley sizes along with a cold air intake and a few other bolt on mods.

These motors take 4.6 qts of oil. (I know bc I'm an auto technician and I change oil in these every day) from personal experience... iv found that the best way to wake these up is to run 4qts of Mobil 1 full synthetic (5-30 is what this takes) with the other 0.6 qts Lucas additive. Along with that, run 93 octane premium, always premium. If you are able to, use Shell V-Power premium gas. Shell VPower premium gasoline is the next thing to formula one car fuel. And it costs a just as much as every other premium gas out there. Nice job on the home made intake. This should help out a lot.

The WS6 is one of the most over the top looking cars out there. It's on the Level of a Viper in ridiculousness. It's glorious! The deserts out in California are super nice. Right now I have a Ford Econoline to do my desert field trips. I'm limited in where I can go. Even got stuck once! It was a nightmare! I really want something so I can explore more. I want a 3800 Series 2 swap into my Grand National. Far better block than the 109 block found in the 86/87 turbo Regals
@sinusbradycardia
@sinusbradycardia 8 лет назад
***** Well, I have $7k invested in my 109 block and I'll probably spend another $4k. For that amount, I could have found a series II block, had it machined and swapped out the stock internals, rods/pistons bought an aftermarket ECM and probably be making 700wrhp reliably, without worrying about cap walk or my block splitting in half. The series I/II/III blocks are all stronger and more reliably than the 109 block when built correctly. Not sure what year you have, but if I were you I would be careful putting a turbo on with NA stock internals. Now, if you could get a supercharged series II/III you could use the rods and pistons out of the those blocks and then turbo your Camaro. I'm only sticking with my 109 block, because it is the stock block for my Grand National. If I ever buy another Grand National or T-Type, I plan on buying a roller and putting a spare supercharged series II/III block in it. For the 109 block you start losing reliably when you're putting over or around 600rwhp. This number isn't pulled out my butt, my engine builder and Kenny Duttweiler(sp?) have said this exact number. There are a couple of guys running 900 or 1000 rwhp with the 109 block, coolant passages have been filled and you basically can't drive on the street with the block because it would over heat. These engines could genade at any time. Now if you are taking a Stage I/II block or TA Performance block, then the sky is the limit. The TA performance block can put out around 2000hp to the flywheel. There are guys running this block in the TSO group with full weight Grand Nationals/T-Types and running 7.6x at over 180mph. As you probably know there is a series II block Camaro or Firebird making over 800rwhp, with forged internals and stock crank and main caps. He can do it reliably.
@sinusbradycardia
@sinusbradycardia 8 лет назад
***** As you are aware the internet is full of info. I do have a question, what model year is your vehicle? Just curious to see if it has electronic throttle control. If you are only planning on running 5lbs of boost, then I would think you should be good with stock internals. Again check on the internet with those who have turbo charged their NA 3800 series II block. Do you mind sharing what turbo and IC you have? What size are the stock injectors? The stock injectors on the Grand National/T-Type were 28#. Initially I upgrading to 42.5, which is good for low 11s or maybe better, then to 60# which should support my goal of mid to low 10s. Just a personal comment, if you can get your car running good with 5lbs that is what I would do. Once you start upping the power level you start having to worry about the transmission and rear end, etc. Good Luck.

@MendingSilence You will need to replace the a/c compressor or replace the a/c clutch which can be hard to do. Replacing the compressor as a unit is much easier. Just have the a/c system vacuumed out by a shop and vacuum again to check for leaks before refilling the system.

Like I said I've heard Rockers combined with the HV3 gives awesome gains. Cams are very labor intensive and cost more like $700 or so to get installed compared to the Rockers and like you said huge MPG loss VS actual MPG gain with rockers. I love the Intense PCM The biggest improvement with a PCM is 40 mph into wide open throttle runs.Your going to like it.The guys at Intense are the coolest 3800 vendors in my opinion. Once you get one your going to wonder why you didnt do it sooner

I noticed a lot of people who first owned a L67 car eventually move onto LS1/LS2/LS3 powered GTO's,Corvettes,Fbodies/G8's or move onto 03-04 Cobras. It sort of seems like an Unofficial rule =P I love my Regal and never intend on giving it up. I think its the perfect compliment to an LSX car =)

Sweet man! Yeah these Supercharged 3800s are Cobras on a smaller and Cheaper scale. Same Idea, easy to add power fast and it has that cool Super Charger whine once you get an intake on it. I would go intake,Intercooler,Modular Pulley system and a tuner just to see if you can run a 3.2. 3,3 should be no problem though. Riv and Cobra, cool combination!
@JohnFromSpace
@JohnFromSpace 15 лет назад
To run a 3.5 with about 2* of KR my mods were Fenderwell intake,3 inch downpipe,ubend delete, intense pcm,ported exhaust manifolds,high flow muffler,colder plugs and 180 degree tstat.If you dont live in california and have 92 or 93 octane gas available you probably could run a 3.5 with those mods with no KR and possibly a 3.4 but you need to scan to be sure. And you dont need to replace the mufflers on a GTP because they arent restrictive like the Regal. Remove the resonator though.

Not yet. I have taken it to the track though but unfortunatly my friend sucks at filming so the film I do have of it isn't worth posting on here since he only got the first part of the races and not the last because of where he was standing. I know your itching to get some major horsepower out of your car but get a scanner. It doesnt sound fun but you'll love it. It even reads 0-60,1/8 and 1/4 miles times so as you mod you can actually see whats giving you the biggest gains.

wow, I have always been a believer in the quality and durability of the 3800 gm engine until our recent tragedies. The rod in the engine broke about 3 months ago in my girlfriends boneville. We bought a new engine and paid to have it swapped in. We have only put 500-1000 miles on the new engine, and a rod has gone out again about 20 minutes ago. We barely got a month out of the new engine. Terrible, there was only 125000 on the first engine that went and 100000 on new one. Got lemons!!!

Okay since nobody else brings it up... Bigger pulleys create more resistance on the crank thus lowering horsepower and torque, not increasing it if you want less resistance on the crank you want "underdrive/smaller diameter pulleys". But these will over time take their toll on the crank as well

Tuner is something that you can use to reprogram your computer (also called a PCM or ECU) or you can get an off the shelf tune if the prospect of tuning your own computer is intimidating. A programmer is $500 and a off the shelftune is $100 or so. An off the shelf tune is a reprogrammed computer they send you to relace your stock one. IF you want an off the shelf tune I would get one from Intense-Racing. They know Bonnevilles best.

Short Stack is what it is. A smaller intercooler. Of course a fullsize ones the way to go but at the time I got it thats all the budget permitted. It did let me drop from a 3.5-3.2 inch pulley with little to no KR. Maybe I'll try stacking another core someday =)
@JohnFromSpace
@JohnFromSpace 15 лет назад
To my knowledge there isnt a silencer. The Reason the Supercharger is quiet stock is because of the way the stock airbox is designed. So once you replace the stock airbox and put in anyform of intake you'll hear the S/C whine even if the intake is the only mod you do. Since you have an HBody you dont have to worry about the Ubend like Regal and GTP guys =)

L36 is a Series 2 3.8, L26/L36 are popular for Supercharging swaps due to their higher compression ratio, matched with a top swap as many call it, which is basically swapping over Heads, Lim, Supercharger, Injectors, etc from a L67/L32, they can be a very good combination if done right. If your average Joe puts it together half assed and beats on it, expect him to be crying in forums about how his motor blew up.

Intake,Ubend delete,180 degree thermostat,2.5 inch downpipe and a reprogrammed PCM will give you a nice power boost that should make you happy. Thats less then $500 in mods. If your strapped on cash get an intake, 180 degree tstat and a reprogrammed PCM. The reprogrammed PCM is probably the best mod you can do because it lets your car go from 3-1 and 4-2 down shifts rather then 3-2 and 4-3 so from a roll your car will be a good amount faster. Thats $200 right there.

With a 3.5 you're going to run some knock. Get a DownPipe installed ASAP. Dont worry about replacing the mufflers. GTPs dont have restrictive mufflers until your past 400 horsepower. Changing mufflers are more for sound. Do remove your resonator though. It should cost about $40 at a muffler shop

Actually, "messing with the engine" is the way to avoid the problem, which is quite rare (less than 1 in 1000 cars had issues). Simply replacing the valve cover gasket and/or re-routing the plug wires is all that needs to be done. That's it. There are 2 ways to react to the word "recall": make ignorant assumptions, or find out what's wrong and fix it.
@stanbernadino
@stanbernadino 15 лет назад
Awesome, that should be cool to see. Far as engine mods go, I'll get to that when I have some extra money but for now the rear electric windows need fixed, and I have a vacuum leak that keeps turning the engine light on. I'd like to install a new air filter first though since that's a relatively easy and cheap way to gain a few hp.
@JohnFromSpace
@JohnFromSpace 15 лет назад
The GTP doesnt have restrictive mufflers but the Regal does. Get a high flow muffler and get the resonator removed. It wont be too loud. I have a video of my exhaust somewhere on my channel its one of the first videos I made and its done with no resonator.

nice video...i would add a few mod options though...ex: higher ratio rockers good 4 at least 10 + to the wheels, cooler t-stat, def get a pcm upgrade! you can upgrade your brakes by getting a big brake kit using caliper brackets from an 00 or so intrigue. you get 12.5 inch rotors which looks great so is stopping

My last 3800 series 2 in a 2001 Regal just may be my last...i never knew about the fatal flaw which I never hear no one speak about....faulty fuel pressure regulators, causing a backfire resulting in cracked intake manifolds and worse case scenario like mine...engine fire which also resulted in a total loss. I hear this is only an issue with series 2 non s/c engines. Can anyone else shed light on this topic, cause at the moment I'm really considering getting a 2.2l 4cyl Camry lol

Installation is simple. 1 cable goes to the OB2 port and 1 is the power. If you want an easy way to power it simply go to the electronics section of an autostore and get this thing called the "Add a fuse" kit They cost $7. The manual the scangauge comes with mentions it. You can install it in 10 minutes.

Since your going with flowmaster 40 series Im guessing your going for loudness? If thats the case ditch the resonator. The 3800 makes enough torque that you wont notice a loss in low end power. You'll get it all back up top. Some parts of the stock resonator is as narrow as 1 inch so its a restriction. If you remove it will drone inside the car and if you dont like the droning you can always put a glass pack where the resonator is/was

Yeah I really need a better tune but my cars still running great even without a custom tune. Better then stock for sure. If you go with the short stack intercooler its going to be about $1000 with modded fuel rails and all the gaskets and stock part replacements you'll need to do the job. Fullsize is about a $2000 project because when you drop down smaller then a 3.0 pulley your going to need bigger injectors. Youll still be happy with a short stack if thats your budget.

@TBomberger You could remove your oil fill cap and see if there is a light brown "goo" accumulating in the top of the cap. Usually happens when antifreeze mixes with oil.

My factory digital boost gauge burnt out so I replaced the air/fuel gauge with a mechanical boost gauge. You can actually install a cam by dropping the subframe so the motor doesnt actually have to come out. Im leaning more towards rockers because I heard you will need a new transmission shortly after a cam install. Knowing me though I probably will go cam =P

I just bought a pair of TOG Headers. Expensive but Im in California so I needed headers that are smog legal and togs are the only pair. Hopefully I'll be able to drop down another pulley size. Once I get the Togs in. Im boost stacking to almost 15 PSI with a 3.2 inch pulley right now. Im staying Supercharged. A lot of the guys who Turbo demod within months. I guess they get in over their heads and cant afford the upkeep. I'm gunning for solid 12s and I'm calling it a day.

This is before I got headers. Im still running shorter dog bones with the headers. I've had them since April and it hasn't melted any wires or anything.

If you have a budget of about $1000 you can upgrade your LS nicely. The cheap stuff for less then $300 is 2.5 inch downpipe, highflow muffler and build your own intake. I have a video on how to do build your own intake and it'll work with your LS. If you want even more performance get high ratio rocker arms and an updated PCM. That will help especially past 60 MPH.

Holdens in Australia use L67s and are RWD so I figure if you get a Supercharger from a Holden it will work with a 3800 camaro. With the heads and intake of course.

best mods you have are the manis and the downpipe. mabye the tin shield under the x pipe. for the money spent id ditch the sc and pony up for the turbo kit. stoopid fun !!

Yes sir you can. And actually a N/A with a Supercharger makes a little more power then a 3800 that came with one because of the higher compression in the non supercharged engine. Your going to need the heads,intake,moddified fuel rails and of course the supercharger to accoplish this. Its going to run you anywhere from 1500-3000$ depending on where your source your parts. It can be done on your own. This is by far one of the easiest cars to work on.

Since you're just starting off I would just go short stack Intercooler from the start. $600 mod but if you start off with that you'll be able to drop down to a 3.3 or maybe even a 3.2. That's a big time horsepower increase. Were talking 50 horsepower and 80 Ft Lbs of torque and you'll have yourself a car that will do the quarter in the 13's.

Great video man i can personally vouch for intense they are in ohio and i have been to the shope and spent a lot of money there ( LSJ mods and 3800 mods) met the owner and a couple of co-workers there those guys live and breathe 3800's they have some damn quick cars as well!! LOVE the Regal GS!!! good job on your car!

If you arent supercharged and just go with a intake and free flowing muffler you'll pick up about 10 horsepower. Not too much but you'll love how your engine sounds. If you want to pick up a little more horsepower I would get ER Rocker arms and that should get you 10-15 more HP

I just got an 02 Pontiac Bonneville with the 3800 supercharged, fully stock. Not looking for crazy power, but one thing I was thinking about doing was modding the exhaust. Should I go with aftermarket mufflers or could I just chop them off and straight pipe it? I chopped the muffler and just put in pipe (leaving the cats on so it was leagel) on the 98 Chevy Tahoe I use to own and it worked great. Not too loud with a nice little HP and mpg increase.

What I meant was if you're just driving casually your transmission is probably going to be in 3rd gear around 40 and if you step on it just kicks down one gear for more power. A reprogrammed computer will kick down all the way to 1st gear. Reprogrammed computer also raises the RPMs by 500 and increases timing. It's worth it

Mine wont be clean ever. I'm actually going to take it off roading =) Basically what sold me on the H3 is you can get it in a manual. So hard to find vehicles that come with a manual now!

@barffboy217 Hey man glad you enjoyed the video. To run a 3.2 inch pulley your going to need an intercooler, or a high performance cam with headers.
@JohnFromSpace
@JohnFromSpace 14 лет назад
@calistameghan KR is a safety measure for Supercharge and turbocharged cars. If your engine is getting to hot you're engine gets knock and your engine pulls timing to protect your engine. Your computer can only pull so much timing thats why if you add too much boost and you dont have enough mods your motor goes BOOM! You can monitor KR with a scangauge. Ideally you want 0* but 1 or 2* wont destroy your motor. 10* or something nuts like that and your motor will be toast in no time

You and the guy below are severley mistaken. GM owns the 3800 architechture which varies from the 3.8 found in the early to late buick 3.8 v6's. Thats why 3800 was in alot of GM platforms as opposed to the 3.8 that buick used

@AutomotiveVlog Ill check it out now. Yeah, it is tough to meet car enthusiasts who appreciate, and do not hate. I can talk about cars forever! The H3 is very nice. I have ridden in them, and they are cool. The only thing i don't like about them is they are so big still it will be a pain to keep one clean.

wow...i wasnt aware of that! now that u mention it i guess u could. if u have the hd trans u might not have a problem. i think if you have the performance shift option on the shifter you have the hd trans. yea a cam would def give you more bang for the buck and i sounds sick.

No clue never taken it on a dyno but I have taken it to the track. The only year I would avoid is 97 since it was the first year of production. I always try to avoid first year cars but I'm sure there are plenty of 97's doing fine.

Mines just an off the shelf tune. I'm guessing with a custom tune I'll gain a good 20 horsepower. My tune is for the basic supporting mods like the 3.4 and a down pipe. Currently my setup has headers,IC and a 3.2 plus all the other small stuff.
@JohnFromSpace
@JohnFromSpace 15 лет назад
Headers come with a downpipe. Definately a good mod especially if you plan on being faster then a 13 in the quarter mile someday

I dont want to bash ZZP since I have parts from them and they always been cool to me but I've been reading from a lot of people that their PCMs have been shorting out or something like that. In Intenses early years people were claiming they were shipping pistons with overly aggressive timing but it seems like Intense has their act together with PCMs Like I said I been running ming for 4 years now and I drive hard. So I got no complaints with Intenses basic tune.
@JohnFromSpace

Its worth the money bud. Youll go from 0-60 in 8 seconds down to the low 6's/high 5s and go from a 16 seconds car to a high 13 second car. Massive gains. Just remember in the quarter mile .1 second is about 1 car length so 2 seconds is a massive difference =)
