Holy crap... Thank you for pointing out the magnet (for the camshaft sensor), I'm putting together a 3800 with a double row timing chain & I forgot to take that off the original (single cam gear). Thanks for saving me a mountain of grief (my motor is still on the stand at the mo...).
I was a big 3800 guy when I was a kid…but then I grew up. Are people really still modding these engines bragging about 400 whp? Just get a junkyard LS and throw it in some dirtball Camaro, turbo it, make 800 wheel and grow up. Props to ZZP for staying true to themselves and not taking the easy way out.
Plenty of ppl making over 500 hp with theses engines buddy and there a few ppl also rwd swapping theses cars and a few also throwing LS engines in them as well
Hello friend. A little nerve wracking getting a big cam in one of these 3800's eh? Least I always thought so. Excited to see my OG car, my first car 98 GTP back when I was hanging with Scott Cook and Zoomer on forums, have new life breathed into it again.
I found when using studs in these engines, the studs grow when warm and you loose tension on them. I could never get the gaskets to hold big boost until I retorqued them when the engine was at operating temp. Not sure if you guys found the same? Talking 1000hp/turbo stuff.
@@600zxr, apparently if you use top notch vavle train components, titanium springs, roller rockers, a high lift cam, bigger injectors, larger fuel pump, custom throttle body, cold air intake, custom ECM, (I'm sure your getting it), then the bottom end of these 3800 will take the power (for a while, your mileage may very). You may want to poke around your local strip to see what the local mad scientist's are doing with their dependable 3800's.
@@shovington67 while there are a lot of sixes making that kind of power, I just don't see it with the 3800......it's even harder to believe the trans can take it. It is a very reliable engine at stock levels but it's not a good base for a high powered reliable engine and efficiency is not going to happen. I only bought my 3800 GP to have a good car to build an extensive stereo system.
The Buick v6 is at top dead center compression stroke when both the gear dots are at 12 o-clock. The same goes for all brands of American made iron block v8s. L6s, and v6s
The desired results are even better when the dot on the cam gear is at 6 o’clock and the crank gear dot is at 12 o’clock. No point in wasting time to determine if those times are pm or am. A quick look outside will usually help with that little detail 🥳.
It's the first time I've ever seen someone put the cylinder heads on before the camshaft. Usually I'll put in the can before the Pistons and rods. It goes in after the crank. I'm sure these guys know what they're doing but I've never seen it done like that before
I know this is a old post. But I am wondering if you or any viewers can give me some advice on the crank gear position. There is about three positions it can fit on the crank and I presume it is each a 2 deg change to the crank Cam timing as a result ?. If there is a possibility that when reassembly was undertaken, that the gear may have been put on the wrong location, what could be the result with the engine when running? As I am wondering if a lack of power, economy from what should be around 7-8L/100km is now running more around the 12-14L/100km highway. Would there be any other noticeable issues? Without removing the front assembly to view the timing gears is there a way to check the cam and crank timing somehow?
I have a '99 firebird V6 & my dad & I replaced the oil pump but I still don't have oil pressure (oil sensor is new & I don't have oil leaks)... Now I have lifter noise.
Unfortunately that’s the situation with these engines if they aren’t maintained with reasonable oil changes or when they are high mileage survivors. The leaks, if any externally aren’t the problem. When internal bearing clearances are worn excessively, a new oil pump won’t help much if at all. Your noisy hydraulic lifters that rely on reasonable oil pressure for proper operation are telling you the bad news. An engine rebuild using quality components will restore the oil pressure along with some performance as well.
Arp sends moly lube for the studs, shouldn’t use oil it’s not the same as the moly lube viscosity. Also when doing head gaskets good practice to not touch the head gasket with fingers use gloves.
Love these guys. They help me eliminate a nasty power delay on my 14 Cadillac CTS 2.0L when going off on ramp onto Interstate. Car is totally balls out now, just had to remove the noise intake silencer from air intake, and get K&N filter from ZZ. I even put proudly the ZZ sticker under hood, and funny thing is car is NO louder than OEM.
@@hayden6056 a "cold" air intake doesn't do anything for ya unless it actually over to a spot where it can get cold air. And even then it doesn't make exhaust louder...
@@johnscott1981 how is it a cold air intake if it's not breathing cold air? Really defeats the purpose doesn't it? You can still make more power though even if hot if the intake pipe size is a restriction. Lol no it doesn't change the exhaust note but who mentioned exhaust?.... Everything makes noise from tyres to valves not just exhaust. Intake noise makes a big difference go put a hard pipe and pod on an m90 car after removing the paper filter and box and tell me it makes no difference to the noise....
I think this project was abandoned. I'm not aware of any rods or crankshaft aftermarket parts that exist for a stroker build. There is a guy, Richard Holdener that is going to do a big bang test on a 3800 series 2 block. Can't wait to see how that tests comes out, because I'm seriously thinking of swapping a 3800 into my Grand National.
@@charleslowe522 c.o.m.e racing do some stroker sets. Have had some cranks break in supercharged form at the nose. I think it's $4500 aud with h beam rods , forged pistons etc.
If you made it to 240.000 miles. It is a good one! And will make it to 300.000 miles. Mine made it to 270.000 before it had a "internal noise", or rod knock. Still drove fine but idled sounding like a Harley-davidson. Untill 184.000. Getting a engine replacement ( used not rebuilt ) w/ ZZP full powerlog exhaust and, heavy-duty ZZPERFORMANCE bottom engine mount & Transmission is being totally replaced too w/Remanufactured 🚗 2008 laCrosse is the car!
Without knowing anything about your GP, I say of course. You should ask any of the ZZP people that currently have dedicated drag cars. I’m talking about quarter mile record setting W-bodies at ZZP 🏁🏆.
I got a question i did head gaskets on my buddy's 2002 firebird stock 3800 series that he got handed down from his dad and when i torque the rockers down to spec on tdc it opens the valves when they are supposed to be closed and ideas?
We are staying with the 4t65 for this build, but there are an increasing number of F23 manual trans swapped cars out there. It's the transmission out of the Cavalier/HHR/base model Cobalt.
I have the same car thats all stock, could you tell me why my car just cranks forever and wont turn on anymore? I already put in a new fuel pump, and starter 🤦🏾♂️🙏🏾
Perhaps the Fuel pump relay? Mine is doing the same thing now but in my case it wasn't just the fuel pump and fuel filter, there is so much going on with this car i have. 😰
Poor girl ask you a question and you completely ignore her even forcing her behind you while you crap on then turn and finish... Pretty poor camera etiquette.
thats because he's condescending and rude. She could build a better engine then this dud and I mean dud not dude. You can tell she wants to learn and instead he does it like shes never touched a wrench before its annoying and the content is shallow because of it
@@socknetea , That’s very well said and exactly what I was thinking too. This guy needs to lighten up with the superior attitude and stop the constant low key brow beating. Besides Ashley’s good mechanical abilities, she obviously has all of the desirable physical features that anyone who appreciates female beauty will agree on. I don’t think that the producers would be so narrow minded to think that having Ashley on the segment just for pleasing eye candy wouldn’t eventually become a uncomfortable situation. Who knows 🤔.
8:24 Why are YOU USING THE WRONG PROCEDURE TO INSTALL THE CAMSHAFT???? YOU are putting yourself out here as a expert, teaching a young little Virgin. Correct procedure is to stand the block yp vertical, yhen install camshaft. Then put engine on engine stand. 12:50 little virgin: you are such a great teacher. NOT
I have NEVER seen a cam installed with the engine vertical. By anyone anywhere ever. Its not even a realistic thought in the real world while doing cam swaps. I hope your either joking or at least will never teach anyone to do this.
@@geoffreygetzin3972 , The Nelly technique of cam installation is news to me also. After over 50 years and many speed shops, I’ve never seen it done by Pros or the novice builders. 🤔.
Awe, this is that annoying woman that answers the customer service emails and doesn't know anything other than how to repeat canned lines taught to her. At least she could be cute if she tried.
