Well, mostly it proves that Brian May is an astrophysicist. :-) (Relativity-caused time dilation was well known and even proven experimentally by 1975; anyone in May's "avocation" would be well aware of it. I was 10 when this song came out, and even then I understood exactly what it was about. Of course, I was and still am a voracious SciFi reader...)

So, '39 is the #39th song of whole official Queen discography. The composer (Brian May) was 39 years old when Queen made his last live show. 39 years later of the release of the song, Interestellar was released. Also, the planet Mercury is 0.39 Astronomical Units (AU) from the sun. Too much 39...

Brian is so underrated. His songs are something else of his own. We know Roger's songs, Freddie's songs, and John's pretty well. There's something about Brian's songs that stand out. They're different. They're probably the most intelligent of all Queen songs.
@ZENOBlAmusic

Brian has very clever songs, but generally Freddie's songs were the most complex.

Brian's songs tell stories. If you really think about it, in some way, all the members of Queen have written songs that tell stories in some way. But Brian's way of telling a story through song is certainly unique.

I've always felt that '39 is the companion song to Interstellar, but I never, ever expected to be so affected by a mashup. This is beautiful work! Two moments really affect me: When Brian sings "Never looked back, never feared, never cried," and you see Cooper taking in 23 years of messages, punctuated with Tom showing the picture of his new girlfriend; and "Your mother's eyes from your eyes cry to me," as Cooper is reunited with Murph. This is stunning and encapsulates so much. Thank you.

I've been to see Dr. May some 4 days ago performing '39 here around, and he introduced it as inviting the audience "to a cosmic journey to deep space in search for new land that might be dangerous and some of us may not return", so The Man Himself made the connection obvious, and his related background video also summoned indeed an interstellar space travel... Or maybe he might have seen this on youtube previously...
@MrJest2
@MrJest2 8 лет назад
Well, "a cosmic journey to deep space in search for new land that might be dangerous and some of us may not return" is what the song is explicitly about - it's very fair to say the movie takes more inspiration from the song (which came out in 1975). However, time dilation is a concept that's nearly a century old now, and has been proven experimentally back in the '60s, so it's not like anyone can accuse Nolan of stealing from the song. Can't even accuse May of stealing it from Einstein. ;-)
@nurlindafsihotang49
@nurlindafsihotang49 6 лет назад
+MrJest2 meh. Nolan gives nods to the song. there none words could described admirations than action. if Nolan blantantly dedicates this movie to May's 39, there will be someone who accused him trying to ride Queen's famous song to publicy his movie. May would get the nod. they would mutually understand the mutual respect for science and the dream for someday human kind could surfe the space.
@dr.jpdixon6299
@dr.jpdixon6299 4 года назад
Brian May is an astronomer, and he has said in many interviews that he wanted to make a song similar to those old songs about people going away to explore new lands but with a sci-fi twist. He explains that because of time dilatation, the people who went on the journey at great speeds, experienced time much slowly than those back on Earth, which is why, when the protagonist of the song comes back, he sees his (presumably) daughter as a much older woman ("Your mother's eyes, from your eyes, cry to me." Her mother has passed away, but she now looks the part because she looks older).

This is simply perfect. I think Christopher Nolan needs to re-cut Interstellar with these 2 very minor additions: include a shot that will show a wall calendar with the year 2039 around the time the expedition leaves, and include this song in the final credits. And make this video the official soundtrack. Interstellar is clearly an adaptation of the '39s lyrics.

Damien, thank you so much for doing this. I could kiss you. We must leave our mother if we are to survive as a species. So few people understand the great sacrifices that must be made to achieve this. Brian May, DOCTOR Brian May, wrote such a haunting yet sweet song to express the heartache of time dialation. Interstellar, an under-rated film if ever there was one. did such a great job of mythologizing that process, with so many level of homage to 2001 and to science fact. This was a joy.

Found the movie thanks to the song. Nolan has to be a Queen fan... "Don't you hear my call though you're many years away" -- Cooper communicating to Murph in five-dimensional space through the bookcase. "Write your letters in the sand" -- the code written in sand on the floor. That has to be more than just coincidence. Either way, fantastic movie. Wonder if Brian May has ever seen it.
