In this video, I want to make a case that 3D Coat can be easily used to create large fantasy environments and it is probably the best software to do it at the moment.
High poly assets that I've shown are available here

3D coat is amazing and we need more tutorial on environment design since 99% is always about those sci fi gizmo that serve no real purpose!

Haha, thank you! I'm guilty though doing a bunch sci-fi :) But yeah I have a ideas for proper fantasy environment because it's fantastic for that.

@@AntonTenitsky I have nothing against sci fi just that 3d coat tutorials are mostly compose of hard surface stuff and i think often people think it is mainly a hard surface software.

yeah, it's a good point. I'll definitely be outputing more non-sci-fi stuff in future.

so coool man do you have process videos of sculpting them

thank you Raja! Unfortunately, I didn't record much. I think I might do a proper training course for environment building later on. Meanwhile you can check this video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XtEQAzTisRM.html and this one ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Jht5wagE4I8.html This process applies to the environment I'm showing.

When using 3DCoat for hard surface modeling how do you do the retopology? I'm quite new to modeling and tried the 3D coat demo to sculpt a weapon. But because it is voxel-based I ended up with a wonky retopology in the end. Do I have to use something like Blender for this or is there an easy way in 3DCoat for doing this?
@AntonTenitsky
@AntonTenitsky 6 лет назад
Hi Sc4r3crow, well, you can, it's a bit hard to easily describe. But if you search for 3D Coat retopology you can get a number of pretty good videos. Basically I would just poly draw on top of the voxel mesh.

how many polys can 3d coat theoretically handle on a good rig? assembly stage exclusively in the game engine?
@AntonTenitsky
@AntonTenitsky 6 лет назад
m4R, hm, I really can't say man. I'll upgrade to a much better laptop which is probably 4x better than my current rig in couple months and I'll be able to test it out.
@AntonTenitsky
@AntonTenitsky 6 лет назад
right now i'm only comfortable at 5-10 mil, with 20-30 mil being sluggish but operatable, so I hope a better rig will allow me to easily handle up to 30-50 mil. I pray for that.
@AntonTenitsky
@AntonTenitsky 6 лет назад
ah, and the assembly inside game engine is all optimized and baked down to 500-2000 triangles per mesh so it can be handled on any rig.

@@AntonTenitsky at 50mill you can in theory be ahead of ps4 graphics by at least 2 gen of home game consoles, ps5, ps6 even maybe-ish ive been comparing videogame low poly application as a benchmark with engines. if say the last of us, infamous second son or gta5, max out at 11mill poly per draw call realtime and if coat can handle screens with a few batched drawcalls then in theory coat should be able to handle a full painted environment. would be great to have a voxelized world map, buildings, assets running in coat but heh likely no textures you meant? =)
