I'm in the process of building a custom 1/10 scale rock crawler. I intend to use steel to make the two frame rails for this chassis, but out of curiosity I decided to 3D print frame rails from ABS plastic to see how strong the chassis would be with them.
I also added some panel lines to the Jeep Cherokee body, and talked a little about future plans for this project.

This is a really good video.And your voice fits it accordingly. Keep up the content. You've inspired me to design and print my own on my 3d printer

To strengthen the plastic frame rail you could design it as a "C" channel.

My instinct would be to make a thin-wall print of the rails that is open on one side like a mould, put a few pieces of steel wire into it, and fill it with epoxy. The stiffness of epoxy differs by brand and type and can usually be varied - the manufacturer won't tell you this, but here's the secret. In 1:1 mix epoxies, the resin part is pure epoxy, and the hardener part, since you don't need that much crosslinking agent, contains filler and plastifier. Now you actually have quite a bit of leeway how much hardener you add, you can add around 30% less hardener, and as long as you still mix everything very well, and preferably heat cure it, it will still cure, but since you also added a lot less plastifier, it will be a lot stiffer! Conversely, you can add more hardener to make the models more flexible. Or you can just skip this bit of useless knowledge and buy epoxy with powder hardener that doesn't contain plastifier and comes out really rigid. Price and time wise, DIYing it like this certainly beats having to order a custom metal part. There's even numerous ways somebody could built the rails without a 3D printer, there's little to say the mould walls couldn't just be papercraft or the whole thing could be made out of sheets of card epoxied together. Or you could just make the frame a bit or a lot thicker and printing it out of PETG. That really isn't going to break. Even ABS and PLA at 100% likely won't break under the weight of the model itself, as long as the print was good.

Have you ever built a lowrider or air bagged rc car with working suspension

Cool project!!! If you want to make the chassis stiffer try to make the rails into c-channels and put more connecting bits between them. I've seen 3mm metal frames twist similar to this just because they are just flat metal but if you out strength within the rails and between them they work way better :)

Awesome! I've been following your content and i am now thinking on making a crawler. What axles are those? Do you recommend any cheap ones? Thanks!

I purchased the same axles and the steering problem was the steering link,it was way to short but I live the vid bro!

Took a look at the links and could not find the chassis to print out. I am building a crawler and owning a 1994 Lifted XJ this is a must to build. Can I get the STL files? I am printing out axels and difs but like your chassis design. Thanks

Hi Scott, These STL files will be made available in the future. I'm still working on the design and I'm putting together a component kit that includes everything that cannot be printed. I'll be making an update video in the upcoming months.

Hello. I know this is a old video but its hard to find videos on people doing 3d printed rc bodies. What body filler would you recommend to smooth out the 3D printed body?

Would you ever put the design up on thingiverse, I enjoy the 3d printing but I'm no idea on creating something like this. But great work glad to see 3d printing and rc in one.

We suddenly want to get this frame or something like it! That could totally be useful for visible bed flex at the rear of the cabin, or at least it might be, where do we get them?
@MakeItRC
@MakeItRC 5 лет назад
Yeah, I like how it has some flex just like a full size frame. Currently the STL files are exclusive to Make It RC Patreon supporters, however a public release will happen in the future.

What is your opinion on those eBay metal axles? I've thought about building a rig around them also
@MakeItRC
@MakeItRC 5 лет назад
They're okay, they have been holding up good and I haven't had any issues. The steering geometry is not great though.
@BobSmith1980.
@BobSmith1980. 5 лет назад
@@MakeItRC do you mean something in the axle design or because of the long shocks. With those long shocks, the castor angle changes which will give you more camber at full turn. I put long shocks on a few of my trucks and then have to adjust the link arm length. Of course you have to find that happy medium between correct castor and a acceptable pinion angle
@MakeItRC
@MakeItRC 5 лет назад
I'm referring to the Ackermann steering angle not being that great.

Some time ago I found a website selling files for a fully 3D printed land rover defender crawler. For some reason I didn't bookmark. Now I can't find any sign of the thing, it's as if it never existed. Do you have any idea how or where I can rediscover it?
@maxman1244
@maxman1244 2 года назад
Don't know if you ever rediscovered them, but the company you're looking for is 3dsets They've massively expanded their lineup of vehicles and have some seriously nice files these days

2 questions. Can you supply a link to the drive train, it really looks good (scale wise). Also, would you be willing to share the model in an AutoCAD compatible format? I would like to modify it so I can make a scale model of my Jeep TJ, but your frame will be too long. Plus I have some ideas to make the frame more rigid, plus mounts for the receiver. I found a nice body to work with, downside is, it isn't a TJ body: r.ebay.com/XfhO2E
