@@AstroToad626 Some things are extremely difficult unless you have a talent for it. Sam seems to pick up anything with relative ease. Musical instruments, tech, sailing, building, repairing electrical, hand navigation, and now he’s 3D printing wind foils. He adapts to whatever he wants to do with relative ease. I’ve tried playing guitar, and while I know I could learn with enough practice, I tried for a couple years to no avail. Sam says “I think I’ll do this or that, and just does it. He’s quite a multitalented man.

I have a lot of experience with fiberglass layup (my dad built fiberglass speedboats out of a backyard shop all threw my childhood) - I think the three bolt attachment will never be strong enough; the area of glass around the bolt heads (X3) is taking all the forces. I think you need to make the stabilizer, the bar, and the foil, all-one-thing using a 'layered sandwich' lamination. Or fabricate a high-strength steel all-one-thing 'backbone' and surround with a matrix/epoxy to get the final shape. Neat watching you learn!

Nice job, man! Main issue with snapping foilwings is the top laminate is too thin in the middle. Put 2-4 more layers of carbon, better unidirectional, on top-middle area. When you print the core, make it 0.5-1mm thinner in that area to accommodate laminate thickness accordingly.

Instead of doing 3d core composites, perhaps try the vacuum bagging technique with 3D printed negative molds. Then just glue the two halves together, plus you can reuse the molds over and over if you wax it. The edges will be more refined as it's defined by the mold instead of wherever the composite wants to go.

Hey Sam. I have cut literally hundreds of R/C plane wing cores from polystyrene using a hotwire not much different from your setup. I have found stainless steel trace wire or aircraft locking wire works better and uses way less power than nichrome wire. I use a 12vac low voltage lighting transformer with no dimmer.
@samholmessailing
@samholmessailing 5 месяцев назад
Cool. Thanks for the tip!
@maarten_notjustagrip
@maarten_notjustagrip 5 месяцев назад
I just checked the wire I use and its 0.025" MALIN brand Aircraft locking wire, and the transformer model, for reference, is EUROLUX ET60T. My bow wire length is about 1m . The trick is to not force the wire through the foam because of the curve in the wire, and also not to go too slow, otherwise you lose size on the profile due to melting. If you watch some R/C wing building videos, youll learn a LOT. about what youre attempting. You need some sort of spar running the full span of your foil. I suggest an old wing batten or two, on edge, preferably a carbon item. Simply cut through your core perpendicular to the chord, spanwise, and glue the spar in and sand to size. Then do your skinning. I suggest carbon/kevlar combo weave. If the dynamic soaring guys can get speeds in the 500mph range with unimaginable G's, YOU can build a successful foil.@@samholmessailing
