This is a video of my 3D printed R2-D2 project/experiment. The files are located here / mrbaddeley other links: astromech.net/ www.curiousmarc.com/r2-d2/mar...
my brother is actually doing this build and is taking him a very long time but this is like the best thing i have ever seen anyone do with a 3d printer and is part of the reason i purchased a printer.I will get around to doing this build someday.Nice job man.
This is really impressive, fantastic work. Love all of the electronics and sense of detail. I'm going to keep my eye out for any updates on this project :)
Excellent job! I'm currently building thr split file MK3 version. Watching your video reminds me of how much I have left to do but also how awesome it can be when I get to the point you're at. Keep up the great work!
It's absolutely phenomenal. Thank you for sharing this incredible project. Your way of describing the project build is very articulate and professional. Looking forward to more of your work. You're truly an inspiration.
brill video buddy, love the speaker mount you made, is there any chance of getting the stl for that from you, would help me out no end, keep them coming
That is so clean! Very nice printing. PLA+ wow. "I love to solder" That explains a lot! I hate it myself. There are a lot of mods on Thingiverse you can download to enhance things. Stuff like hiding a plug in port in one of the octogons, stuff for the speakers, those 2 buttons on the dome, there is mod to turn them into power and reset buttons, etc. I too went to the MIII drive, I finished my assembly of those a few months ago. Black undercoat: Yup. "Sanding the tops of the pie pieces at 45 to work:" Nice tip. "Split the power" Michael Baddeley mentioned that several times. Good call. Awesome job!
That is one AWESOME build... I'm just starting out with 3D printing.. Wanting to do an R2D2 and C3PO.. Looks like I have a lot to learn. Thanks for the informative video
Brother that is an awesome build. Congratulations! I'll buy that r2 off ya! Lol. I'm just in the beginning stage if building r2 using an old empty keg! Lol
Amazing job Kev!! Wow.. can't put into word how much time and effort you put into this. Just result is worthed and amazing. I found your video cuz I search and was debating if I should build my own. Again.. great job and very inspiring what you accomplish. I'm so gonna build one now. 😁👍💯💯💯
Just started this project, about half way done with the dome. Can't wait too we're you have gotten to!!! Great video and thanks for sharing this job well done 👏
I wish i had your insight, knowledge and abilities, to allow me to do something as phenomenal as this, absolutely awesome work, i'm thoroughly impressed
You are a god!!!! congratulations...I´m an Electronics Engineer from Mexico...and you work its really amazing!!!! Your hardware selection is the best...
I just used spray cans from Home Depot / Lowes. I honestly had no luck with filler primer. The silver and blue are the Chrysler and Ford colors if I remember right. The clear was also of the shelf from HD or Lowes
Outstanding! I have been looking for a chassis to put together a gaming computer in. I am a total noob, but given time I think I could figure it out. Do you think the gears and track pads could handle an additional 15-20lbs? If not I could make it just a stationary case. But wow could you imagine that awesome rig with a gaming computer in it ?? Wow.
I’ve ordered a 3D printer, obvs I’ll start with small projects like rebel rank badges, then blasters, then helmets. But ultimately I’d like to build an R5.
Impressive stuff, we've started on ours and I'm excited, just frustrated at how slow the printing is going. :) Two questions, where do I find the proper color codes for the painting? I don't want to try to match the blue by eye... and where do you get the Marcduino boards now?
Hey Darryl Sorry for the delay in the answer. The color codes for the paint can be found on astromech. I can get the exact ones I used if you like. I ordered the Marcduino boards from oshpark I believe. You can also send the gerber files to a site and have them made. You will have to flash the arduino chips. marcaduino.com has all the info
Nice! I’m in process of researching to build one of these, and I also want to 3D print everything but the dome… so this is cool to see. What is your username on the forums?
i myself is a help with mr braddely ive got the dome all done printing wise and started on the body but cant find some of the parts like grabe arms and the doors that are on the body any help would be great
Hello, I am currently printing the 2nd main body frame, of the ring that is, I have come to the leg holes in the body, (part 9a,9b,9c) how do these play in the finished kit?
I got part way through mine and essentially killed my printer. I've got the dome, the body (which is a bit wonky due to poor print quality) and one and a half legs I think. I'm currently trying to build my own printer which has a bigger build area to help with completing the build... but I might end up redoing a lot and I'm even debating learning metal casting and trying to cast some/most/all in aluminium. I also have a plan for making a miniature projector (and using laminar flow technique to create a portable "screen") for the Leia message... but the way I do things this is probably still a few years off. Love the finish you've got on yours... looking really great! Makes me want my printer up and running so I can get back to tinkering.
You want a great printer get yourself a ender 3 max . I got one and I love it, if you make it all square as you put it together, then you get amazing prints off it.
How could anyone not like this I want to do a 3d printer of r2 I at this moment don't have a 3d printer this is why I'm want one just to build a life size r2
trying to the electronics for my dome is gonna be a nightmare as I have no experience in doing this, just 3d printing ahah. how did u learn to do the electronics
You’ll be looking around 20 to 25 rolls of filament give or take and $25 each roll, electrics you can get the padwan 360 system which would cost you around $500 , you can buy a lights kit for about $200 , then you have motors and other little bits and pieces.
I shouldve took better notes, lol. I used primarily Hatchbox regular PLA (basically why I call this an experiment), but for some tougher parts I used eSun PLA+ and Raise3D Premium. I had great luck with all three. The Hatchbox PLA is so nice for PLA printing and the Raise3D was my favorite. I did try a number of other filaments but I think it really depends on your settings how much time you are willing to tweet them.
I tried to search for the R2 files but could not locate them. Do you have the files that you used available? I so want to build R2. Wish I could find a C-3P0 as well
Hi James, the files are generously free by the creator, Mr Baddeley, on his site. www.patreon.com/mrbaddeley/about please consider joining his patreon if you do download and print his files. His work is amazing
