Make your own R2-D2 part 1. Today we'll be going over printing the dome pieces, sanding, joining them & prepping for paint. 450mm Lazy-Susan gear sizing will also be covered to ensure your R2-D2's dome drive gear properly fits your particular lazy-susan bearing.
For this particular 3D printed R2-D2 build, I'm using Mr. Baddeley's Full Size R2D2 Version 2 200 cut print files. These are available on his Patreon download page along with all the other R2 files & PDF instructions for each part of the build.

Man love all the videos in this series. Watching them to get an idea of what I'm getting myself into lol, but man, he must have changed the gear ring or something. My Susan was also 448mm so figured I'd use the same size as yours, but turns out it's too big 😔 reprinting at the normal 100 percent now

Great build videos! Working on my R2 right now. Just an fyi the guy that owns the Amazon page you posted grew wise and raised his prices from $35 to $92. I guess the traffic drove demand. I found the same one on another Amazon page for $35.

You should use dichloromethane as a glue, gives you working time and is a solvent. The parts are literally welded together.

I'm really enjoying this series - I'm curious what orientation did you print R2's Radar Eye in and also the small logic light holders? Did you use supports? Cheers!

As stated in the video, I printed it with dome/curved side facing down - used supports. Guess I should have printed it according to the Printed Droid Guide I reference & link to in the first video (left flat side down). Not sure why I didn't follow the guide on that piece? Perhaps I figured I'd get better results printing it back curve side down? I can't remember as that was many months ago now. I think I printed logic surrounds flat (back) side down going by the layer line directions.

I'm really enjoying the series. Do you happen to know if the version 2 R2 files for the drive wheel have been corrected to fit the larger Lazy Susan? Or have you uploaded the modified files anywhere? Thanks again for all this helpful info.

Thanks for the views and glad you are enjoying the build series. To answer your question re. the version two (2) dome file, I don't know if Michael has any other main ring gear files? He does however have the two lower ring files for adequate L-susan clearance as I mentioned. Because there are slight dimensional variations between different L-susans, I can't think of any other practical way to obtain good fitment other than changing the scaling ratio in your slicer program to fine tune the fit.

when you printed the blue panels did you have to cut the backing my files for most of the blue panels for the dome had support on the back

Hi John awesome build love the detail, can l just ask with the purchase of the lazy susan from Amazon link does it matter with the depth of it as there is a 10mm one and a 12mm?

hi john did you print ring sections d and h when you reduced the sizing, i can only see six red ring pieces ???

Hi Martin - I actually increased the sizing of the gear sections (102.4%). The ring gear I printed was the 6 piece version with the cross brace arms as an integral part of two of the gear sections. I can't recall exactly what Baddeley folder they were in but it's not the 8 part ring gear with the two small additional cross arm tooth sections. It's only 6 parts which you can see if you look closely at the glued and finished ring gear.

Hi John . Got my sv01 and starting testing next week. Buying esun pla+ grey for dome. How much did you use for dome as 3kg cheaper but don't want to get that much if don't need that much. Thanks

I honestly can't remember. Even if I did however, it wouldn't be of much value because it's totally dependent on your slicer settings (infill & wall thickness), and mistakes. You'll get a pretty good idea of how much weight of filament is used on each part when you slice them in your slicer program as they indicate the weight of the print.

I just received my bearing in the mail and it is way undersized. The outside diameter is only 444mm. Would this be useable or would it be best to return the bearing and try and source one that is closer to the 450mm OD?

"Way undersized"? 4 mm smaller than the one I'm using so less than 1%. That is nothing and is perfectly fine. If I would have been lucky enough to get that size, I wouldn't of had to reprint my entire lower ring sections as there would be adequate clearance giving an extra 2mm on either side which would have likely been just enough for bearing to thick sidewall ring clearance.

I see your ring gear has elongated holes but the Baddeley files only have round holes. Did you mod the files, or are these available somewhere?

Didn't mod the ring gear (other than rescaling it to fit my specific susan). The Baddeley Mark 3 body file ring gears all have the elongated holes.

Comparing the MkIII gear files against the V2 it's clear they're quite different. which is why I originally couldn't figure out why your scaling factor was so different to mine. The V2 one fit my lazy susan hole profile quite well so instead of scaling it I just made the gear wall thicker so it fit more snugly against the lazy susan.

It depends on the specific part being printed (cosmetic vs. structural) and of course the type o filament used. I mostly used the recommend print settings as outlined in Michael's instructions as well as the Printed Droid Guide; both of which I mentioned and link to in the first video in the series covering resources. Did tweak a few of course but kept it about 90% as per the recommendations.

What are you talking about, I don't even fit the radar eye in this video. I don't fit it until part 2 (painting the dome) where I clearly state its position is all over the place; some level, some crooked. In short, we fit them however we want because there was no consistency on screen either.

@Mickael Jansson - According to the Mr. Baddeley full size R2D2 print file instructions, between 20 & 25kgs depending on screw ups and specific print files used.

Hey well to give you an idea I’ve used 17 rolls of filament so far and I have ordered another 2 rolls, that should roughly do I think, in saying that I did reprint some of the parts by mistake and I did have acouple fail too. The body, skirt, dome, legs, battery boxes and all 3 feet are all printed but I do have to do the foot drives, I’m thinking I might do the Omni wheels too as I was going to buy them but don’t know yet. Plus I have a lot of the little things to print, like some of the coin slots, the power couplers and so on. As for time printing I started around the middle of August last year, took a week off from printing over Christmas cos we went away but the printers gone no stop basically for the rest of the time.

Got it from our local auto-parts store, I don't see it on Amazon. Any lightweight body filler should work fine.
