In this video I attempted to design and build a 3d printed RC plane. The design was definitely a challenge, but did it actually fly? Watch the video to find out.

I wonder if it would be better to design and print most stuff horizontal. Should make it less prone to crack.

Hah, great job, man! I also design my own RC plane, your video was helpful in some details. You can consider not just gluing one round part to another, but to make like small protruding cylinders on one part which will fit the similar cylinder recesses on another part. It will make your plane more sturdy.

Yes I thought of doing that, but it's hard to do since the part has 0% infill. Support ribs are needed for the cylinders to actually stay attached and it's a lot of extra work. I will add these features on bigger designs though.

@@GregMakesStuff have you tried some software that simulates the air fluxes around your plane during the flight? And another question - have you calculated the center of mass and other stuff for your plane? Or you just designed it and tried to fly without any calculations? :)

Mostly I just eyeballed it and hoped for the best lol. The center of gravity should be approximately 1/4 of the cord length from the leading edge of the wing.

I wouldn't trust those tiny rubber bands to hold my wing and your ailerons may be prone to fluttering due to a missing hinge in the middle. Also, designing such a beautiful plane without a big black spinner in front is sacrilege ;)

I also have files for the fuselage available without the skewer holes so the wing can be permanently glued down

@@GregMakesStuff Nothing wrong with fixing wings with rubber bands, I only meant you should use much thicker ones.

Why so suprised when it flies, of course it will as long as it's balanced, a plane will fly. Can't wait to get my Prusa 3d printer, I will be churning out all sorts of r/c models, boats, planes heck maybe even am r/c car (complex ) but I've seen designs for them.

Here's an explanation: the solid parts were copied and shelled out in fusion 360 (0.5 mm wall thickness) to create the "skin". Rib lines were then sketched using the design as a reference and extruded. These ribs were then cut by the skin and holes were created in them to reduce weight. Finally, these ribs were subtracted from the original solid parts and these parts were mirrored when necessary. Hope this helps!

Great job! a CAD tutorial of that would be great. I think you could even use the timeline for not having to do it all over again (i'm assuming you used Fusion360)

Yes, but I had to delete the timeline l. There were so many steps that the timeline just make it more difficult to work on (you can't just simply delete stuff because all the geometries are related in a way)

Anyone think it would be possible to print this in tpu? Pla is just so fragile one crash and this thing is done.

TPU is too flexible. There would be too much wing flutter. If the design was optimized for TPU, it would be too heavy.

Nevermind i looked at the files i see you designed it yourself. How did you make the criss cross sections of it? Was it some kind of pattern then a split body or cut?

It was a painfully long and tedious process. I designed the rib structure and then subtracted it from the solid parts. The outer wall is only 1 perimeter thick, so 0.4mm

@@piaso244 yeah it means that it can be super light. I printed it at 220°C so that the layers fuse to each other.

Are these 3D-printed plane considered durable?

I'd say they're about as durable as balsa wood. If you crash it hard, it will explode into a thousand pieces

can you share the cad files with us? what program do you use?

What CAD files do you want in particular? I can't share the whole design since someone could redistribute it with different branding. Stl files are available in the link in the description and I used Fusion360 to create the design
