Spend hundreds of dollars to save $190 Duh

yeah but he gained some tools that can be used for other stuff in the future in the process and made the part himself i kindah like it when someone asks me "where did you get that ", and i can say : "i made that myself" if thats the only thing you will ever make its like trowing money out the window , but most hobbyist dont work that way

no many people are doing this to save money, rather to learn, which is part of growing, no matter your age. By your comment, i suspect youre teen to early 20's?.

i know its been 4 years, but printed gears for threading work well too! when the tolerance gets too great, throw it away and print another one. also, if you crash the head, maybe the plastic gear will break before something expensive??

Once I heard South Bend lathe and a 3D printer in the same sentence, I subscribed! I just finished restoring my 1926 South Bend 9” model C and also bought an Ender 3 pro 3D printer.

That was super. Who would have guessed you could just find a print file to make that gear and housing. This is one of very few practical uses for a home owned 3d printer that I have seen. You show a few more uses and I may wind up getting one myself.

Thanks Harold! I'll admit I was hesitant on 3D printers myself, but the one I got was only $160 on eBay and between this project and making toys for the kids, it's been worth it! :) I'll see about showing some other uses I've found for the printer- I've been printing my CAD designs as sort of a real world test, which is very fun, as well as designing things like extended glock magazine base plates and things like that :) Thanks for stopping by!

Actually there are a number of valuable things you can do with a 3D printer. One BIG one is printing out patterns that will be used in casting aluminum, iron, or bronze in the homeshop foundry. I have a pattern now for a South Bend follow rest, that only an expert would be able to tell that it is not an original South Bend, but a damn good copy. That is just one example.

So when I print I print onto glass along with coating the glass with hair spray. When I print ABS I have my bed between 90-100c depending on the part size. I have had a wrapped part for along time. Petg is good but it is hydroscopic.

Thought I might mention it. You can do the back out method for thread cutting. Safer for tools. Start in the thread relief and work towards tailstock

Nice. Good use of modern technology.

ABS is known for warping. PLA is less prone to warping, but is more brittle and less heat-tolerant. PETG is supposed to be kinda' the best of both worlds, but I haven't played with it yet...
@PracticalRenaissance
@PracticalRenaissance 7 лет назад
Good to know! I haven't even farted around with PLA yet and I know next to nothing about PETG!
@darkwinter6028
@darkwinter6028 7 лет назад
PLA is also pretty much non-toxic, also (there's even a medical grade of it which is used to make dissolving implants - it's poly-lactic-acid, and lactic acid is something that your body naturally makes and disposes of, so...). And it smells like candy when it's being printed, too... 😀

ASA is another supposed 'superfilament' that I've been itching to try.
@LarryYaw

I would not call PLA very brittle. Granted it's not as flexible as ABS. PLA would have been a great choice for this project because it does not react to solvents as easily as ABS. And PLA is way less prone to warping while printing. And PLA smells a lot better and does not give off toxic fumes like ABS. I prefer to make brackets out of PLA because it does not flex as much as ABS. It is more rigid. ABS does give a better wear surface. And it will handle a bit higher temps before melting. I have only printed a little with PETG. I print with PLA the most. It's really easy to print with. All 3 have there uses. I keep all three around. I bought some Ninja flex to tinker with. That stuff looks interesting too.

You dont have to put the compount to 30 degrees when using a newer thread insert like that.. only when your using old toolbits thats not a full profile cutter.. nice job at the gauge (Y)

Was hoping for more in depth explanation of the thread dial EG relation of the gear to leadscrew and the thread size you cut, rather than buy 3D printer download files and press the print button.

Great video! Very creative use of a 3D printer. Might actually make one of these if I can find a model for the SB 13 lathe. Also, what is the song in the intro of the video?

never knew the thing existed , had to check my own late to see if it had a dail , it has its mounted to the end of the treaded rod that runs along my lathe been thinking about buying a 3d printer myself i allso thinking about turning my mill intoo a cnc mill wish cost about as mush as a 3d printer in materials i just might put an extruderhead intoo the chuck and mount a heated bed on the crosstable and see wat happens , i suspect the mill would be a lot more rigit and precice

Not sure what I did wrong, but feeding in worked great on mine, tried to have it engaged when feeding out... the leadscrew grabbed the gear and destroyed it between the carriage and ways. Anybody else have that problem?

I'm no expert, but aren't you supposed to feed in using the top slide? Otherwise, what's the point of the 29.5 degrees?
@PracticalRenaissance
@PracticalRenaissance 7 лет назад
Yep! The tool is moved into the cut in small increments by the compound rest, while the cross slide is used to back off and re-zero the tool in between passes. I don't think all of the dial-turning got left in after editing :)

Hey i have a lathe that is very similar to this one, its a champion blower forge model 9L, i am thinking that a gearbox from a southbend lathe of a similar size would work for it, Id rather not have to change gears out every time i want to change speeds and such. Any thoughts on this?

What kind of 3d printer is that? Tried to find it on the other videos but couldn't.

I haven't really featured it in any other videos. it's found on eBay (and other places) as a DIY kit based off open source software and controllers, I think it's referred to as an "Anet A8"

no problem, love the vids. have you been happy with your grizzly mill, im looking at one for my mower repair shop for light fab work
@PracticalRenaissance
@PracticalRenaissance 7 лет назад
So far I've been very happy! it has a very large working envelope for its price and class, and for what it is, the power and rigidity have been good enough for what I've needed it for. I'm currently in the middle of giving it a CNC conversion, video will hopefully come in a couple of weeks, but for what it is (cost, size, etc) I've been very pleased with it! The biggest drawback is that the stand grizzly includes with it absolutely NEEDS more rigidity, which I augmented with a pair of 4x4s and homemade leveling feet; otherwise the machine can be VERY wobbly which is terribly bad.
