Holy smokes. Brilliant design and implementation. Shock diamonds out of a 3D printed engine is not something I expected to see, least of all not for as long a burn time as you achieved. I'm not surprised the smaller chamber worked better. With all the turbulence caused by the vortex the combustion should be extremely rapid and require little space to complete. Excellent video production also.
@SamRogers
@SamRogers 3 года назад
Woah, thanks Ben. Big fan, especially your Senko Hanabi videos, really beautiful. The characteristic length was originally calculated for liquid propane injection, but like you say it’s just too long for a stable vortex, however since this is gas-gas injection the chamber could actually be even shorter. Thank you!

Although the design cannot scale too well it is simple enough to make many of these engines together. I am envisioning a hexagonal grid of 7 of these engines machined out of two aluminium plates. Due to the simple geometry a two-piece construction is possible with only the most basic CNC cutting processes. Oxygen distribution and the swirl nozzles can be cut as slots in the nozzle plate that is then sandwiched to the much simpler combustion chamber plate. I'm a little surprised that the oxygen is injected on the outside, I would have expected the oxygen to be tangentially injected at the rear with the fuel injected tangentially near the nozzle, but this mechanism may be relying on the centrifugal forcing of the lower-density oxygen inward through the fuel stream to provide mixing, so swapping the inputs may need a lower-density fuel like hydrogen to get this high mixing rate.

@Waxoff Waxon nope. The test here is to use vortex cooling to prevent the combustion chamber from burning up, they are not testing the nozzle. Printing just the nozzle in ceramic would not cheat the combustion chamber test. The ceramic will eventually heat up enough to melt the resin that it is connected to but printing the nozzle in ceramic might still allow a longer test of the vortex cooling of the combustion chamber.

After watching in amazement at the sheer work/time that must have gone into this project, then checking your channel, I admit I was strangely relieved to see that this seems to have been something you've been working on for around 3 years. Also, that you know a thing or two about Jet engines. If that wasn't the case, then I would feel ashamed of my own productivity in life lol. So sigh of relief there then. I also couldn't initially work out why you had so few subs for this kind of content and production. But seeing how your backcat of videos only totals around 8 and that's over 3 years, I kinda get it now. Still, the quality takes time, unfortunately, youtube doesn't really play nice with that cadence. Great stuff though, so I've subbed.

In a scaled up unit, the walls of the main chamber will likely still need significant cooling. This is because of the intense infrared light made, for which the fluid barrier does nothing to protect. A nice reflective coating on the inside will probably help with that a lot though.

Film cooling the edges of the chamber is generally done with the fuel, not the oxygen, since in high oxygen environments, most chamber materials can be fuel too. Ablative chamber cooling is also pretty common, where the inside of the chamber slowly erodes/ablates from the heat. If the walls of your chamber get hot enough in the oxygen environment, you'll get "engine rich" exhaust.
