A first in a series of looks into getting into the wargaming hobby, with only a weekend's worth of effort.
I'll be showing what YOU can do with a weekend's worth of time, both in creating minis, painting them, building proxies, etc. so that you can get into this amazing and fun hobby. The barrier for entry has historically been a large amount of money, and I'm gonna see what I can do to help with that!

I hope that those of you who are interested in starting into wargaming enjoy this video! The folks at Atlas are some of the nicest people I've ever worked with, and make a truly great product. One Page Rules also has a super fun setup with their King's Wrath starter set, and I truly think that you will enjoy wargaming if you are even kind of interested in it. :)

Hello @Rybonator. Sorry to ask this in this video, but I need your help (please, please, please). In your video "Testing 3D Printed Resins: Is Water Washable Better?" you use Ameralabs AMD-3 resins, Water Washable Elegoo Resin and Elegoo Gray Resin. Ameralabs AMD-3 is not sold here in Portugal, so I only have the option to buy Elegoo or Anycubic. I bought and printed some miniatures with Elegoo Gray Resin and they just broke into several pieces in one meter drop or so. And in your video, you hit the miniature with a hammer and it stays in one piece. How do you get that?

I bought a box of GW minis just to paint; zero interest in wargaming. Ran into One Page Rules, bought a printer, and now I'm interested in wargaming. If it wasn't for things like OPR I wouldn't be considering building any GW stuff past my small art projects. 3D printing is restoring a balance to the marketplace and GW is going to have to add value to keep up which works best for everyone.

Love this video! I'm not a war gamer, and don't plan to be, but I 3D print a ton of minis. Not sure if you'll see this, but a note on your exposure settings, you have your bottom exposure time set to 98 seconds. I'm not sure about the resin your using, but most resins don't need exposures that high. You run the risk of burning out your LCD screen much faster. Check out 3D Printing Pro's video on exposure times, it definitely helped me dial in some of my settings. Again, great video!

I’m in the process of building a miniature army of just cavalry units out of cosclay, so far i’ve made 5 horses and i’ve got 5 more horses in progress, i think i get at least 20 horses for the first unit which are going to be horse knights, after i use this clay, i’ll get more clay and make 20 more until i’ll have 8 units of 20 mounted soldiers, when i finish this army, i’ll make another army composed of zombie and evil doll infantry units

This is great timing. I have been into 3d printing for a few years now and just the other day a friend suggested that I stop printing useless things (which are actually awesome things) and print a couple of armies for wargaming. Thing is neither he nor I have ever played any such game and trying to figure out where to get the armies, if there are universal rules or specific for each game? army? etc was very daunting. Hopefully you will speak on a few of these things in the next videos of the series because I honestly feel lost.

Counterpoint: (and this IS for people who are willing to splurge on a 3D printer) the Dominion Box Set, which comes with a full rule book, two armies totaling up to 60 models, and rules for all those models, is 150-200 dollars, while the full 3D printer Setup, not counting resin, and with the Elegoo Mars 2, the printer shown in the video, not counting battletomes due to free rule apps like BattleScribe, ends up being $305.99, though, there is a benefit to having the 3D printer too, due to it having much more freedom and unlimited prints, in end, in the short term, you can get 2 larger armies for cheaper, but in the long term you can get way more models at a higher harm rate to you, but cheaper

@jacob6071
@jacob6071 2 года назад
@@insomniacbritgaming1632 Just comparing the resin cost to the number of successful prints lol no, I spent much less on resin than I would havve on minis. I've bought about 220 in resin (and was gifted another 40 worth) and have about I have 76 medium unit packs/individual heroes, 33 large monsters, and 10huge-gargantuan monsters. If I had bought a comparable number of similar sized minis (with lower detail) from reaper, it'd cost me ~$700 (that lowballing their value, the same models I've printed are priced $2-$20 more from vendors selling actual prints). Taking the other costs into account though (1202k from printer, gloves, alcohol, patreons, etc), I haven't broken even yet based on the reaper minis cost. Compared to the retail cost of thee actual models I believe I've already made up my spending considering a lot of what I considered stuff that would be a bundle of like 3 minis for $4 are being sold as individuals and prices mostly start at $7 for the smallest minis, $15 for large, and $20-60 for bigger ones

@slimjim7411
@slimjim7411 2 года назад
You just put them in a clear cup of water during curing. Water refracts the light more evenly curing the model. For example if you just put them out in the sun they will cure but they will cure unevenly which stresses the resin, and they will quickly over cure in the more exposed area's. It's like the difference between them being hit by a UV glow vs a UV beam.

Unfortunately, its actually not cheaper to make your own armies vs buying them in Canada. Those Space Marines is almost $150, for two armies and to buy the Elagoo 3D printers is over $500 plus $10 shipping, off Amazon. General rule of thumb, when it comes to the US stuff... take its price, double it, and then add the original price (51+51=102+51=153 for an example for the Space Marines). For one unit its actually 70, but to add tax on top of that 140 for both, its over 150 and I dunno what the shipping would be, if you bought online vs in-store.

Help me rybo-kenobi you’re my only hope! My wife and I just got a elegoo Mars pro and our prints keep lacking detail. We are using black resin and our exposure time is at 12 seconds per layer. Any tips? Would welcome advice from anyone!
@Rybonator
@Rybonator 2 года назад
So, if you got a mars pro, what type of resin are you using? It SEEMS like 12 seconds is WAY too long of an exposure time, but I could be wrong. High exposure time for the first few layers is advised, but I'd drop that down. On a pro, I typically need maybe 7-8 seconds (but each printer is different.) If the exposure is too high, then it can build up excess resin that clings to the mini. You can always try scrubbing your mini with a soft toothbrush to remove even more excess resin that might be clinging on. Try dropping your exposure time and see if that helps :) Drop the exposure time, and maybe slow the lift speed down.

When GWG charges as much as they do for tiny plastic figures that are mass produced, it is *ALWAYS* ethical to make your own proxies. It's just plain greedy.

Regarding Proxies in tournaments. What's the issue here? You've still got to buy the books to use the rules for the models just as the other players do. Unless you've got the skills and knowledge in a program like Blender or Meshmixer or whatever, most 3d print models are pretty monopose so you'll end up with units that look the same. Whereas with GW items you can kitbash a lot better. Also, it's condesceding to say "well they bought those models from GW so it's not fair" ... Exactly how do you know they bought those models from GW for full price? They could have bought them off ebay, or from companies like Bitz Box. This hobby is the best thing to happen to GW in a long time. If it weren't for 3d printing GW would be pricing themselves out of the market.

Oh man, the proxy argument. I've played 40k, Warhammer, and eventually fell in love with Warmachine and Hordes at our little local gaming shop and was really spoiled. Proxying was shrugged off for the most part because there were a lot of younger/poorer teens and young adults in the group and it was often a great way for people to plan future lists. I made really good friends with another Legion of Everblight player and either borrowed his models or proxied until I had the money to buy some bigger models, and it worked out fine because it allowed everyone to play larger games without being restricted. I get the reasoning behind not wanting people to proxy, but it's always been frustrating for me since I've seen firsthand how helpful it can be for getting people into the hobby, or letting people test out lists they might otherwise not be able to try. War gaming is an expensive hobby, and not always super welcoming, so I can't help but wish it wasn't so strictly guarded sometimes.
@Rybonator
@Rybonator 2 года назад
Proxying in ANYTHING is the easiest way to get people to TRY something. I totally am FOR proxying, but understand that spaces with warhammer tournaments WANT to run only warhammer things, as it's fair for those who did invest a lot of money, and fair for the company that puts things on like those tournaments. My experience however is much more like your own. I feel that is the more REAL world approach to the hobby.

Really cool video, but kind of confused how it would be unethical to use 3D print proxies, or how it would be unfair to people who bought official models? I get Games Workshop wouldn't want you to use third party models, it's them losing money, but you're not recasting their IP and (if the tournament allowed it) the other players could have bought third party minis too
@slimjim7411
@slimjim7411 2 года назад
It's just gatekeeping stuff. The whole point of 40K rules is to make you puke out tons of money for the best armies. Hence many people have a no pay - no play mentality. While in a friendly game as long as it's a cool model nobody cares about proxies. In any kind of official event usually Games Workshop is putting up prize support based on the number of entries. If they get caught allowing non-GW models to be used it can result in them losing that support. Which is why I don't forsee 3D printers taking over anytime soon, and I don't see events being okay with them either. The myriad of events is part of the driving force that keeps GW on top of the heap. It's also the failing of other systems like One Page Rules which I think are neat but you aren't going to find a One Page Rules tournament anywhere around anywhere. That said there are events for games that don't care about the mini's you use. King's of War is a perfect example and both of these forces would make not only cool King's of War armies but they would typically be more welcome than GW mini's in King's of War which does catch people some hate. GW being the devil and all that.

I think if GW were smarter than they are they would offer licenses to 3D print their minis (probably for like 20+ bucks a month because GW are some greedy bastards). It would help their company keep 40k going and get people into AoS if it was paired with 40k

I have MANY many thoughts about this. Most of them in line with what your thoughts are, but with some other nuances. I think competition is GOOD for business (see Playstation, Xbox and Nintendo, PC & Mac, etc.) . I think 3d printing is finally starting to be a REAL competition with injection molding, and some companies are going to need to adapt in new ways. But, HOW that will happen, is still up for debate.

I feel that this is a full view of a game offered by the One Page Rules (As there is a full game as a part of the figures.) And showing that they can be used as proxies - Heck, ROCKS can be used as proxies. But, the miniatures are similar to existing minis, so I do feel why there could be a comparison
@TheKrakenfist

The "ethical question" of whether it's okay to use non-official models to play a game is kind of a joke. Take GW, for example... you need to buy around $100 worth of books to play the game. You paid for those rules, so you can use whatever models you feel like using to play the game that you paid for. I use a mix of GW and non-GW models for all their games because I just do not like some of the stuff they put out, and some of their ranges are super outdated.

"It's not fair to those who spent the money on Warhammer miniatures" Yeah, and if I pay more for alternative manufacturers minis than for Geedubs', is it fair to me that they spent less for Warhammer minis? Is it fair if I show up with a fully painted printed army against a grey, primerless, half built group of badly glued models, only because they've spent more? This argument makes no sense.

not fair to other players? how? i dont care that i may have paid more for my minis than someone else, more power to them. what i care about is having enough people playing the game to keep it going, something GW prices and practices isn't helping.
