"Freely sharing their knownledge and helping others succeed" "Always been part of 3D printing" Yes. AFTER some rather obvious 3D printing patents finally expired, and everyone could finally use them freely. Of course the same (and other) companies are still actively trying to patent other 3D printing relating technologies, sometimes such attempts have been successfully shot down by pointing out previous implementations by others of the very same ideas. Great video though! Lets just not forget the dark past of 3D printing, and try to make sure it will never happen again!

I have a master's degree in Design for Additive Manufacturing from Pennsylvania State University and I specialized in Reverse Engineering at my last job in Aerospace. The CAD tools I use in my career are as follows. Solidworks, CATIA-V5, Ntopology, Geomagic DesignX, Geomagic Control, GibbsCAM, PrusaSlicer, Cura, 3DExpert, Inkscape and ImageJ. Student license of solidworks comes complimentary with an EAA membership for those who like airplanes and are ok spending 40$ a year. PS: Tom, excellent summary. I have been enjoying this series a lot and look forward to sharing it with others new to the hobby.

Really surprised that Sketchup is not mentioned on the 3d design side for software. Lots of great features, supports STL formatting. A much more simplistic 3D Modelling app, but still allows for great detailing, and a ton of add on's. Just pointing out options, for those people that have never used CAD. The learning curve is so much easier.

SolveSpace is absolutely awesome for functional parts. The only features I'm missing are fillets and chamfers, but if you really want you can sometimes emulate them with clever extrusions. Threads are also infeasible in the current official release (2.3) but 3.0 will change that soon hopefully. But even with these drawbacks it's my go-to tool now because it's so streamlined and works so well. It took me under 1 hour to become comfortable with designing new parts. The ability to simulate mechanisms and export data as CSV is just a cherry on the top. I truly believe that with some community support it could become the next Blender for parametric CAD.

For years, I have had a love/hate relationship with Blender. I love what it can do, and want to do all the things. But earlier tutorials that I could find... didn't always work with my style of learning. However, I am once again eager to pick it back up again, and can hopefully find tutorials that are a better fit for me.

I was blown away the first time I actually tried OpenSCAD. I'd been aware of it, but when I had a design I wanted to make it was last on my list. I struggled with everything I tried, and only after exhausting every other option I turned to OpenSCAD. I'd put it off because the idea of it struck me as so intimidating. Once I got started though, it was a breeze. Everything just came together.

Always very comprehensive, smart and clear. You'd be a great teacher. ;-) I know Blender (by name) since a long time, yet never tried it. I'm more into engineering parts (being an [software] engineer, that's pretty logical), so my choice is Fusion 360 (and it has a very fluid/comprehensive UI too). FreeCAD could have been great too. It's free, yet it has a very clumsy UI and is far from being intuitive. Anyway, you highlighted quite a bunch of things about parts scanning. For some reason, a small project I'm working on for my little bro' involves scanning an existing thing to get a reversed imprint to make a clip-on standoff. It's sad Autodesk discontinued their solution... Yet, maybe Meshroom could really help. I'll give it a try.

One thing about OpenSCAD: When I first heard about it, I didn't understand the process of coding without a visual part. But that was a misconception. Yes, you write code, but you constantly see the model you are building rendered in 3D. I think a lot of people are turn off from it thinking it is "just" code. You can also highlight or color the individual part (or module) etc. that you are tweaking.

couple other things... I have been using "shapr3d" on the ipad with an apple pencil and have been enjoying using that. its cheaper than fusion, and if youre a student or educator you can get it for a year for free and so far I highly recommend it. It might not do everything you need to do, but it can do a lot and using an apple pencil and the portability to work on your files on the go with a pencil is pretty nice. also... the ipad pro just came out with a lidar sensor in it, which is supposed to be excellent for AR and measuring space and objects. I obviously dont have that, but I imagine it would be an excellent tool for recreating 3d models of objects with a much higher degree of accuracy than those other options.

@jamessowin2505
@jamessowin2505 4 года назад
@@harrycarson11 I disagree and agree. It has all the same abilities to be edited like a normal model. But I find that it slows down your computer more than if you had made the part yourself. This is because when you make a cylinder from scratch, fusion knows it's a cylinder with a perfectly circular cross section. When you convert a mesh cylinder to a solid in fusion. It only sees it as a few hundred or even thousand flat planes roughly arranged in a cylinder shape. Because of this it makes the program run slower. So you have all the same functionality, but it can be slower to edit. If you right click on the project name at the top of the list on the left side of the screen, you can select capture history so you can edit things easier as you go. Otherwise the only way to edit things you do is by undoing with Ctrl+Z.

Hello. I was wondering, where would someone (me) go if they were (and I am) looking with help with designing plastic parts? I have designed a 3D Drone based on the U.S. Marines Nibbler Drone, which is basically entirely 3D Printed. But as close as t is I was wondering if it can be better and what I’ve missed. Someone with more experience than myself might look at it and say, “For sure they would have designed it using X, Y and Z methods”. Know what I mean? So where would I go to find help? Does any one know?

OpenSCAD is all right, if you're used to functional programming (Lisp and the like). If you learned Python or Java to start with, it can be cumbersome at first. What doesn't help is the "if it's not working, you just don't get it" attitude in some parts of the documentation, it reminds me of the Voron subreddit.

OpenSCAD is both awesome and horrible. It is awesome you can be very precise and exactly know how to model stuff. However, this also requires good math skills, even for mundane things. That, in combination that the devs don't find it necessary to add more basic shapes and you essentially need to model everything from primitives and combine that with boolean operations to something makes it hard to use, even for an average programmer. You essentially get a cylinder, cube, and sphere and you need to work with that. Substract a cube from a sphere to make a knob base, then rotate a shallow cylinder 90 degrees and union it with the knob to get a handle.
@MMuraseofSandvich

Some of the functions in OpenSCAD are cool. The outer hull function allowed me to put chamfers on a box in a fraction of the time needed to use a library designed for that purpose.

There are some really cool libraries to help you. BezierScad is one of them. And with ability to rotate and extrude 2d shapes, you can pretty much create any 3d shape you want and use it as a basic shape later.

What about Sketchup? Our architect uses it, because its quick and intuitive and has lots of plugins... so do I. Admittedly I use an old version, because I don't like to rely on my intenet connection, but it is really intuitive and has loads of Ruby plugins to help out where fusion (which I cannot download) does more easily. No I don't work for Google, I have absolutely no money to spare - I have 4 children! I sold my treasured WASP synthesizer to buy my Prusa I3.... There are many titanic-sized caveats and "exceptions" to this stuff. On Covid-19, not really. Patents haven't played any significant role as to delaying or prohibiting work on dealing with covid. Not yet anyway. Therapeutics thus far, are either in decent supply, off-patent or so complex to produce that few if any 3rd party facility would have been able to even _start_ production within 12-18 months of knowing _how_ to do it. Vaccines - there are very many of them in the works, but none of them are quite ready to conclude stage 3 trials and file for approval yet. So patents are not a delaying factor there, either. Again, yet. Once they start getting ready, production will be licensed out, as manufacturers want to meet demand to the extent possible, and offload production to do so faster. The thing with research and development in tech and medical, is that by now we've come to a point (quite some time ago) where most(!) new research and development is iiinsanely expensive. Especially medical, where success rate from research to usable tech or product-to-market, is _very_ low. Meaning the only ones really able to fund that research and development, is national governments, and corporations financed by investors. With vaccines as an example, the cost of one single candidate from start of research to market, can be in tens to hundreds of billions. And by modern historic track record, only roughly 7-10% or candidates survive all the way to product-to-market. With pharmaceutical therapeutics, that success rate to a widely successful product, can be as low as 0.2%. That money doesn't grow on trees. It's either funded by taxpayers, profits from nationalized industry, or private/commercial investors. Donation based revenue just isn't cutting it with most modern research and development. And with the kind of "success rates" as mentioned, the proceeds from that one successful development, has to at minimum cover all the expenses those 90-99.8% "failed" ones. Not only that, there has to be _some_ level of profit margin on top, to fund newer and more complex research, and for the investors. If the _best possible_ outcome for an investor is to break even, and it's all down hill losses from there - no one is gonna invest in research and development. Well maybe some governments, but the overwhelming majority of funding, is still private or commercial. So while patents can be quite a headache and at times a hindrance, in many areas, there wouldn't be any progress without them due to the immense costs and low success rate of current-day RnD.

i see law breakers admitting crimes on this page of steeling. theft. not paying royalties. The community surly does not want that. That judge sure made others pay for just selling a thing and not paying the oldest licence holder. other licences after the first are likely thinking they can upload a thing and offer it free. When more lawyers spot the massive opertunity in 3d printing we may see a lot more red flags on things and fines for selling things and not paying royalties.

The prices of printers have gone down. The quality of prints have gone up. PLA has taken the place of ABS as most printed substance. PETG and TPU has become more popular and easier to print. More filament colors have become available. They have Nylon that costs $25 per Kg, and can be printed on any stock machine (Taulamn's Nylon 230). Wood filament. Filaments that have smells added. Color changing filaments based on temperature, UV light, Glow in the dark. Filaments with additives like PLA+/(pro), glass, carbon fiber. Printers that can print food or bio liquids. There are tons of more printer configurations. Delta, CoreXY, Infinite Z. There are better add-ons for printers, touchscreen, color screen, automatic bed leveling, removable beds, magnetic beds, octoprint plus tons of plugins for it like Astrobox, Klipper, and Spaghetti Detective. Printers fail way less often, better extrusion drives, geared, dual gears, planetary gears. Better filament cooling. Slicers are much more optimized, more slicers, more options in slicers, fuzzy skin, tree supports, conical supports, wire mode printing, vase mode, combing, bridge mode, better infills, better scripting support for Gcode, volumetric extrusion, K-factors, adaptive layer heights. A multitude of ways to print multi color or even multi material prints. Color injection into filament (DaVinci, Mimaki and HP's Jet Fusion), the Pallette, prusia multi material upgrade 2s, dual extrusion, swappable print head setups, diamond hotend, E3D Kraken, Medusa, selectra, MM3D, 3Dchameleon (cheapest). 3 in one machines are popping up (3D printing, CNC milling, and Laser etching). Tons of more website and files online for things you can print. There are literally too many things to mention. It's nothing like it was years ago. The first thing I ever printed was on a $300,000+ machine in college. It took a few days to print, was small enough to fit in the palm of my hand, was an ugly see through yellow color, was relatively brittle and weak, and cost about $200 in resin, not including cost of running the machine. Now I can print the same part in whatever color, or material I want in about 3-4 hours. It's strong enough I can stand on it. My machine only costed $200. And the material cost was about $0.10. I actually just found the file on my old hard drive and printed the part a week ago. Then I re printed it at 3 times the size just because. We have come a LONG long way.
