In this video I try my luck 3D printing with PEKK filament, an ultra-performance material that requires a whopping 360C to extrude!

luckily the ender is mostly made of metal. That needs a slightly higher temp to hold and catch fire. Or a pure oxygen atmosphere.

Alexa is becoming more human than most humans I know. That filament is impressive, I thought you were crazy for wanting to print at those temps but now I see the potential. You could potentially 3D print working engines and rocket nozzles among other things. I'm also impressed with your cooling solution.

Hi 0Calvin, I have gathered some experience printing PPSU, which is similar to PEEK and PEKK but extrudes at 400°C. Let me give you some advice, what I found was that a hot air fan set at 220° and directed at the print as a print cooling fan gives very good results. You basically need to have the "ambient" above the heat deflection, but under the glass transition temperature. It works so well, that you do not even need a brim. Secondly, you need to dry the filament. This is extremely important. My PPSU comes on a metal spool and needs to dry at 150°C. I went so far as to have it in the oven directly next to the printer and use the freshly dried filament, it results in excellent and very translucent prints. From your print it looks like you have a lot of moisture in the filament. If you are interested, i have a thread on reprap.org. Cheers Max

@jasonm2477
@jasonm2477 5 лет назад
@@gordo3di its variable because of the size/shape of parts amount of sand size of container but if you put the sand and part in together while sand is cold it takes hours longer if you put the sand in the oven while its heating (but heat the oven to slightly below the annealing temperature) it goes much faster, but from the parts i've done it takes 2-3x as much time sometimes less usually on the high end of that

I'm pretty sure PEEK/PEKK really need a higher temp ambient printing environment to minimize warping, generally the higher, the better.

@@jasonm2477 Amorphous PEKK has a glass transition temperature of 162°C. He annealed partially crystallized PEKK mostly at 160°C precisely so that there was no problem with warping or deformation. Crystallized PEKK is much more heat resistant, hence the higher temperature after 30 minutes - to finish the rest of the crystallization.

- I see. Thx. Yes, medical application would indeed indicate PEKK is GRAS. - Another consideration though is form/use: the "layered" result of FDM provides places for bacteria. This may or may not be effectively cleaned/removed. PEKK, w/ it's relatively high 'glass transition temperature', may be OK, but I have not researched this particular material. - So, to the extent to which you are concerned, you may want to research a little further. - Whatever the case, I did enjoy your little experiment:) And, as a math teacher, I especially enjoyed the tessellation.
@0calvin
@0calvin 5 лет назад
Very true about the layers trapping bacteria, but just like in medical uses, because of its heat resistance it can be steam cleaned or cleaned with nice hot soapy water like most anything else. It is also resistant to many chemicals so alcohol would kill most of the nasties I expect. I don't know enough about it to risk other's life with it, but I feel confident enough to make pancakes with it now and then for myself. I will let everyone know if I get any tumors in the future. - Great. - Just wanted to ensure you were aware of the larger health issues. - So, how do the pancakes taste?! - Might I suggest "fractal" pancakes next? :D ...

The hot pan test isn't really a fair test since you didn't anneal the other filament, such as the polycarbonate. I'd love to see a comparison of the 2 filaments, PEKK & PC after both are annealed.

Annealing does not improve the temperature resistance of most plastics such as ABS, PETG, and PC. PLA and PAEK-family plastics are exceptions. Annealing will usually improve the strength of most plasics, however, because it relieves the internal stresses formed by the 3D-printing process. Good thought, though.

Geezus, is that filament laced with cocaine? Why is it so expensive...

Cool experiment, but for your application I think you'd have been printing a gecko cookie cutter, and using PLA or something.

You're off-gassing formaldehyde from your pan by having it sit at 500F with nothing in it.

why don't you just make the pancake and then use the mold to cut out the shape after? I guess that defeats the purpose of needing pekk, you could just use pla at that point.
