Just to be clear, I am not trying to discourage anyone from learning 3D. It's literally my life, and I love doing it - I've just seen too many people get frustrated when they work for 6 months modeling a human face and don't understand why their project doesn't like cutscenes from the Final Fantasy 7 Remake. People have no idea how long it takes before their models start looking that good. Then if you somehow manage to get over that hump, you soon encounter the challenge of shading, rigging, and animating it correctly. Each of which takes a lot of practice, and can easily be done wrong. So, if you just want to create your own world/story. And, you don't really care whether it's 2D, a comic, game, or a movie... I'm not saying that 2D is easy, because it definitely has it's own challenges, but in my opinion and experience, you're going to get a lot farther a lot faster if you master 2D instead. I hope that clears things up, and as always please have a fantastic day -!

I don't know, maybe it's an illusion, but for me 3D sculpting has turned out MUCH easier than drawing something to look like 3D. It's much more intuitive to me and I got way better results.

You are one of the best instructors I found on the web and fortunately there's a ton of good people out there right now, Andrew Price is one of them, you completely shine in the time department, and you don't disappoint at all in the detail and depth of your tutorials, I really appreciate all your content, if you ever consider sharing your experience with Unity I know it will be pretty handful, you convinced me to use inverse kinematics, I did the exchange filled with fear and anxiety and I'm glad I did, wish all the best always

@Royal Skies LLC Been attempting to make pictures of my characters for a while now, on and off for a few years, while also figuring out what I want the stories to be like. It's kind of an iterative process, figuring out what they need to be able to do and how they should look, since it's a fantasy world and fantasy worlds have rules. That said, your videos have been a great motivator, and I'm currently waiting for a long enough stretch of time I can start re-trying the whole process with some of your techniques included for the rigging. But that comes with a minor caveat, and it's related to your remark on "if you're a writer, go motion capture." I kinda wanna do motion capture, actually, but I don't think I can fit a horse in my living room. Or a deer. And even if I could, there's no way I can get them to stand on two legs or start punching each other. I'm doing animal fantasy, so... yeah. Definitely 3D for me, even as a writer first I definitely fall into the "does not exist" camp. Looking forward to the modelling tuts, definitely wanna see if there's any tricks I can use. Don't get me wrong, I've done modelling and rigging before, I know how to do basic stuff, it's just that it never turns out the way I want it and it takes a long time to realise I need to start over. Iterative process, basically, and it's never been a long enough stretch of practice that it progressed to anything meaningful beyond some half-decent cartoonish models with correct topology related to homologous organs. ... Pray for me.

I highly recommend trying both, then go from there. I started with 2D, drawing, art and such, I enjoyed it but when I tried 3D, it clicked with me. But I'm not dropping 2D, in fact I highly encourage you polish your talent in both 2D and 3D because there's a lot you can learn in one that'll translate to the other. If you don't agree, that's fine, I am just beginner right now anyway, this is just honestly what I feel about this.

One thing I'd like to note for anyone who are maybe discouraged by the "5 years to master 3D" comment is that I think this will heavily depend on the time you invest. If you're like only touching Blender/Maya like once a week or maybe at most like an hour on average a day or two days then yeah its going to take a few years. If instead you're investing into it like its your full time job, so like 40 hours a week, 8 hours a work day every work day I think you can probably get 90% of the way there to doing what you want out of it in 6 months; this is based on my own experience when I was fortunate enough at my job to get a chance to use blender for my work for like 8 hours a day for a month and I believe I learned more in that month than I did the last three *years*. So chin up people!

I've been soft paw modeling for like... 3 years now. Soft paw meaning, I get bored and step away from it for another hobby for a while. I've been using modeling for pretty much only 3D printing, until I started making a comic.. I actually use 3D models for the references for my 2D art. It gives me an idea of how the scene will look, and if I will like the outcome or if I need to re design the scene, it's been super helpful. You know what else has been super helpful? Royal Skies. If not only for his humorous approach to you know... fuckin life. It's also the fact he teaches you in under 5 minutes. None of this babbling for 20 minutes to get to a 2 minute solution. I've seen webcomics and animes that make their characters, environments, and so on in 3d, pose them up for a frame, and then draw over the render. the neat thing about that approach is that after you've got the 3D done, it becomes very easy to very rapidly produced finished frames, even if you're not a particularly good 2D artist. the really amazing part about it is that if done right, the 3d side of things can be completely invisible to the viewer.
@adambak5003

SOOO here is a quite a story: There was dude named Adam who wanted to work at game industry but he was sh*t at drawning. So instead on going on some kind of course like a normal person would do, he decided that he will make some 3d stuff, then will try to draw it, and then he can tell everyone he can make 2d art. BUUUUT.... 3dMax is GOD DAMN EXPENSIVE. So he decided he will learn Blender. In one year he learned basics, in 2 he learned more. He figured out that 3d is amazing. He changed his mind on 2d and istead he focused on improving his 3d skills. But thats not the end of the story. When he was bored on lectures he used to draw stuff on the corner of his notebook. And since he had taken on 3d, his "stuff" started to look more and more... cool (?). Then he realized that he actually can do 2d drawnings, because he now knows how things really works with perspectives, volumes and other stuff (that i still don't know official names for). So TL;DR, what our friend said is true. You can't be focused on 3d and 2d simultaneously, becouse when you're focused on more than one thing you're not focused on anything. But knowing at least basics of each approach will help you improve as artist. So do not think of digital art as: "I must do only 3d coz i do 3d" or "I'll never touch blender coz 3d stinks". My suggestion, try both then focus on one. NOT important: I learned blender from Piotr Arłukowicz sooooo i guess i cant be clasified as a donut person /D

I did do up until Level 2 but most of what I learned and use is courtesy of Royal Skies, so you could say I'm an Angel of the Royal Skies. If you see this, coin it.

3d has so many purposes. It is a challenging area of knowledge. I am sure it can help prevent Alzheimer's and keep you sharp until you're 90 and beyond. 3d has a unique option of combining left and right hemisphere activity by introducing technical complications on the path of your creative self-expression. But at the same time it helps your spatial thinking evolve. When I got my degree in architecture I thought I could sculpt well. But after I started making my first models in 3ds max and Zbrush 1.3, I got so depressed about how shitty they were looking. It took years to bring coherence to the hands and brain and really start seeing a 3d object on screen. It is an art in itself and we should not think of it as of some utilitary thing: making game assets, animations, environments etc. It is beautiful as a separate art type with a pretty steep learning curve - much more complex than handling oil paints and solvent.

It is a valuable tool, because drawing is time consuming craft, and making 3-d references for characters and locations, keeps size and perspective correct so you can focus telling your story. It won't make you a great artist, but if you are serious about getting your projects done, and protecting your body, you should look for what blender can assist you in. Work smart, not hard.

whether or not processing your ideas to make it real(ish, real-er, conveys better for some clear/unclear reasons ) is your desire, not 2d or 3d matter. still, like, you have to compose things for split second enjoyment/attention of someone, or your own for many hours if you just really want your ideas to be processed. there is the messsage similar to that though throughout this video, I just take it differently. you still have to decide whether or not the girl you pay to cosplay for will consent, looking like you wish it to be, etc., working with the refinement of decisions, your own sound feedback to it

3D and especially Blender is good for many different things and each specialisation has its own depths (CAD, architecture, product design, etc.) and requires specialised knowledge in the respective subfield. That is also one reason why it is easy to get lost in 3D. Especially in Blender with Sculpting and 2D Grease Pencil applications it is even easier to get lost. What I would really be interested in would be professional entry scenarios, i.e. what you really need to know or at what level you need to be in order to get offered a job, which probably varies from sector to sector, and what you will only learn afterwards on a sector-specific basis. Or also, I am a 2D graphic designer and layouter, whether and how the use of 3D in the "classic field" is quasi realistic?

Im also choosing 3D because its faster to make good animations/just faster in general.

i.. i want to make or at least learn to make realistic 3d scenes because my taste is quite "special" to put it that way and finding a model and not having to pay her tons of money for this is pretty hard. well, im now about a year in. the scenes are still far away from being realistic, however they look alright to me and the process is a good distraction from the stressful work life. 2d is also nothing for me because i su*k quite hard at drawing. its easier for me to create a simplified 3d object, than having to recreate it in a 2d space where you have to match distortions, view angles etc.

Sounds like 3D is probably the best medium for you then. And, I am in a similar boat because I also suck at drawing. For me, I learned 3D because I hated drawing the same character from different angles lol

Sounds like you are speaking to the people who dont know what they specialize in. But what if you wanted to do this professionally? Wouldnt you have to learn many styles for designing a character and a environment along with textures or am I suppose to just focus on the style I like a lot and work on it?
@TheRoyalSkies
@TheRoyalSkies 3 года назад
Sure, if you were set on doing this professionally. I would say the most important style you should focus on is photo-realism. That style is probably in the highest demand. You will naturally develop a personal style that is most comfortable for you as you practice. So focus on photo-realism for professional. And, if you're working for a small team, probably try learn how to make low-poly look good -

Wow. This video really encouraged me to do 3D modeling. I do digital painting. I work with a flat canvas in a digital art painting. However I do use shading and texture to make the pictures look three dimensional. I also do a lot of 2D sketches in physical sketchbooks. Sketches are good for experimenting and developing my ideas. Digital painting is good for creating a high quality images for finished products. I think of my 3D work as something far superior. The only real benefit that 2D has is that it is easier and faster to do. So it is more efficient for developing ideas. However today, my said she likes my 2D work better than my 3D work. I am thoroughly confused. I was looking for info on the internet about 2d vs 3d art. I got to this video. This blew my mind. 3D modeling is not something I was considering let alone working on. This video did a good job of showing options and giving the strengths and weaknesses. Yet I found that I am a good candidate for learning 3D modeling. The kind of stuff I like to draw and paint is stuff that is unrealistic. I have a special interest in the fantasy genre, and I like to indulge. I never touched photography because I didn't want to be limited by reality. There is so much that I like to draw, but I couldn't photograph. There are magicians, dragons, elves and monsters. I also like to draw pretty and androgynous men. That is something that is possible in the real world, but it is really hard to find. I like to draw pretty women, but they are a lot more common. Even the donut woman in this video is pretty enough for my uses. I never thought about 3D modeling. That may be something to check out.

Been on and off blender after hitting roadblocks with weight painting and rigging. With the help of your videos, I've gotten started on a really big project, Thanks for the help, I can't wait for your next video. also, I'm using pre-established characters in said project. I want to pull in fans of that franchise while also making a name for myself. Is this a good tactic?

I've already had experience with 2D, but abandoned it to chase things I've thought were more profitable - in the end, I'm not sure that profit difference was worth it. I made several attempts to go back to it, giving up cuz I'm easily frustrated, but lately the URGE struck me again - this time stronger, we'll see if I can get through the obstacles of learning proper perspective and shading (my two weaknesses, in this exact order), because after fighting with Blender to follow some dude's Zelda model tutorial and still not making that thing even close to what he demonstrated, I'm pretty sure 3D will not be my future...

This is comedy gold...I started messing with Blender like 100 years ago cause I though 'oh it'll help me storyboard' --- cut to 1000 hours later, and if I'd picked up a pencil and paper and learned to draw - I'd probably be half decent...but then I got into making a short film 'oh, animation will be EASIER than live action, cause I can do it all in my basement' -- sure, and I did...but I'm 8 years older .... now, while I'm waiting to see if that film goes anywhere, I was like - oh, I'll just do a proof of concept for a 3d film by making two characters and using auto-lipsync...cause our AI overlords and the youtubers made that look easy....well, 85 hours later, I've got some pretty bad 3d models...but was it fun? that's the thing about rabbit holes...figuring this stuff out - FOR SOME PEOPLE - is like video games that you tell yourself is 'work'...or work adjacent...what is so addictive though, is seeing the guys (with like 1000000 hours of experience, but for some reason you ignore that..) who make videos where they world build and throw some characters in in what looks like 15 minutes...so you go back to wondering why the weight paint thing won't let you ctrl click a bone...

I want to get far ahead but sometimes I get a bit overwhelmed by all the stuff I'm yet to learn sence I've dipped into a little bit of a few things and a solid 6 month or more in hard surface modeling I've done Uv,rigging , animating just to test every area and I live allmost all of them But I can't stop feeling some times overwhelmed by all the things yet to come and when I feel down there's allways something that tells me not to stop. All hough having a bit less time now because of my work I still put in those hors to learn blender and all the concepts and I really don't wanna stop This might be a rant but it was something to say and to o thers that feel like me. I have nothing :V My university major is Game Design and Developing. And I hate coding after one year of learning.
