Same! but yeah 2d animation is a little outdated. 3d films are cheaper I think? for example. Mulan used 70 million, well Buaty and the beast 45 million! addition to this 3d films like Moana CoCo, (lil xan) looked way better in 2d than 3d? but movies like frozen would be interesting in 2D. (Sorry for the awful grammer

This is why Treasure Planet is one of my favorite animated films ever. It combines both 2D and 3D, it was so ahead of its time. Like John Silvers's cyborg parts were metal and realistic but the rest of him was in 2D. And somehow they made it futuristic and historic at the same time, like the Middle Age version of a futuristic society.

In my opinion, that's the best style of animation. 2d works in certain area, as does 3d. Combining the two allows for way more possibilities.

Respect for 3D animators just went through the roof. Also learning about 2D was interesting, I knew they had a lot of repeated drawings but not how it all came together. Really liked hearing about the comparisons.

I'm in school for 2D animation since it just feels so much more natural, no matter how much improvement 3D animation goes through. Sure it looks fantastic, they make it all so realistic but it doesn't have what 2D has, the stroke of the artist, the feeling the artist goes to draw that line in the frame. I don't know, it's just different. Offcourse I still love 3D animation but I still hold 2D a lot dearer.

what do you mean? Have you ever modeled something in 3D? Styluses are a tool 3D modelers use too, its a great help alongside the mouse and keyboard :D the magic feeling is in the 3D process too ;D
@PampdArt

John Rambo I thought more in the way of when you watch the actual animation than the creation of it. Like a 2D animation sketch can already be like woah while if you see a 3D sketch it's...I don't really know how to explain it but you know what everybody has their own oppinion on this so it doesn't really matter. Do you mean a stylus like the pen for drawing with the tablet or any other stylus?

John Rambo For example when there's no texture yet or colors like in the videos of the creation of Zootopia, those scenes that weren't finished yet. I call that a 3D sketch. Apologies if I don't know the accurate words for 3D animation, I do have a bit of it next year, maybe I'll learn a thing or two. :)

I don't mind CGI if it's done right or suitable to the story (Wreck-It Ralph for example). CGI can be really cool and pretty, but I like 2D animation because characters have more of the smooth fluid movements I like.
@lordofsavages
@lordofsavages 10 лет назад
Definitely, I feel like 3-d animation tends to hold back where as 2-d animation didn't hold back in exaggeration of movement. The main reason why I really like Cloudy and the Chance of Meatball 2 was that they really exaggerated the animation which I didn't see in 3-d cg movies lately.
@ohmygodnoddy
@ohmygodnoddy 10 лет назад
lordofsavages I actually don't like the exaggeration in 3D. I finally watched Frozen the other day and couldn't stand how the young girl's actions were portrayed, it annoyed me (and my feminist claws came out from wherever they lurk most of the day) until I began playing scenes of Beauty and the Beast in my mind and realised it was probably more to do with the medium. I can't hate one Disney "princess" more than the next ones for doing exactly the same thing. Must be the medium.

+ohmygodnoddy Exaggeration is a huge part of all animation, 2D or 3D. Take another look at Beauty and the Beast; there's exaggeration all through that film.
@ohmygodnoddy
@ohmygodnoddy 8 лет назад
+Paul Naas Yeah, I'm aware of that. I've become more accepting of 3D animation as a medium, especially when it plays a role in aiding claymation. Also watched frozen back to back on a flight home the other month and my opinion of it is much warmer (still more a Tangled fan). I think it was just seeing the less familiar juxtapose of something more real-like (3D animation) being exaggerated. The behaviour of 2D animations appeared more natural in my mind because of that.

What saddens me most is the complete 3D animation takeover for basically every modern film. I love 3D, I think it's very beautiful, but I personally love 2D more and it makes me sad that we don't have much variety anymore. I think it would be awesome if we could have a 2D film, every now and again.

When I went to see Wreck-It Ralph, there was a short film called 'Paperman', I didn't know if it was 3D or 2D animation or maybe both. It looked FANTASTIC! Like the best animation I've ever seen in YEARS! I hope Disney made a full-length animated picture using this animation!

It's CG with some vectors that can interpolate lines and graphics to simulate 2D or something like that. I think Disney wants to make a film with the process, but they said it's too early in the development of the process.

It's obvious this guy only does 3D animation, man I feel so under appreciated lol. Both are equally hard, both can have lazy results, whether it's grabbing a low-poly model off the unity asset store with rig intact, to using symbol animation just to cut corners and ignore perspective and dimension. Both are extremely tedious though, and depending on how much layering there is for your character, it really all comes down to design. One can say that 2D Animating a photo-realistic line drawing of the eiffel tower falling at 30 fps on 2's frame-by-frame is harder than 3D animating a phong with a simple bump-mapped texture zipping across the screen. The opposite exists as well, for 3D animating a millipede to traverse tall grass while it gets run over by a tractor is significantly harder than snoopy's walk cycle on 3's. I'm probably having a pissy fit, but in my experience with doing both they should've gotten another guy who's experienced in 2D animation to collab with this guy.

Really interesting to see the difference so well explained. Nice work on the video. This really hit home how 3D animators live in curve graphs and 2D with the drawing. I’ve seen it mentioned in behind the scenes at Pixar, but this really hit home just how painstaking and abstract 3D animation is. One note though, the carpet in Aladdin was 3D the tassels were 2D, but they used 3D for the carpet surface. Your statement holds though, a completely still 3D character would look much more jarring then a cartoonish 2D. I’d say because each medium has set certain expectations about their ‘worlds’ as 3D generates more tween frames we come to expect them.

About the whole 3D having to constantly move or else it looks dead, that's the same with 2D. This style of animation is called Full Animation, where every frame is moving constantly in some way or another. Look at Hotel Transylvania: that movie uses still frames consistently and it looks really nice! It's kinda like if you were to animate traditionally in 2D, and then all the sudden use Flash tweens; it'd be super jarring! Any change in animation style abruptly is jarring, which is why I think Courage the Cowardly Dog's most frightening scenes was when the animation style was changed abruptly. Great video though!

Big studios don't do 2D anymore because it takes more time and effort to do hand-drawn. However, if they can make 2D films using CGI that look and feel like hand-drawn, I'm all for it (As long as they don't use flash. Yuck.). 2D and 3D films have a different feel to them. Could you imagine a 3D Lion King or a 2D Frozen? I didn't think so... But by abandoning 2D, the studios are also abandoning the feel of 2D films. I say they should adapt 2D to the technology instead of ditching it completely.

I'm not ditching entirely your video here, and I hope it doesn't feel that way, it's great that you took the time to explain the differences between the two techniques (and after all it is about the differences, and not the similarities :P). I just get a bit tired of people thinking we write down code or we just move around curves when we do 3D animation ;). It's still just the art of creating images to convey life. And I know a lot of animators who only use the graph editor 5% of the time.

I think 3d animation has limits. I know that sounds strange granted a computer can do practically anything. But CG usually only looks good if lots of money is put into it. 2d animation can look good on almost any budget (granted if he animators know what their doing). I also believe 2d can get away with a lot more. 3d is used to simulate real life so if the characters and setting (to and extent) look overly stylized and cartooney, the animation looks very unappealing and quite ugly. As for 2d, if that looks stylized it looks well placed and appealing. Don't get me wrong, I do love 3d animation. But I don't think it compares to drawing that come to life.
@vgmaster9

2d has limits as well., such as for camera movements. When you combine both 2d and 3d (like Titan AE and Treasure Planet), you have virtually no limits.

@GalekC
@GalekC 10 лет назад
I think it mainly depends on each anime's budget (based on the company) and overall episode count that it may go for. The longer the anime, the less likely it will have a good budget & have stiffer animation as a result, from what I gather.
@AfroSnackey
@AfroSnackey 10 лет назад
***** Yeah it seems that the only anime company to consistently deliver smooth animation is Studio Ghibili (Disney's funding them, duh!) and anything Katsuhiro Otomo decides to direct.
@Botandarun
@Botandarun 10 лет назад
AfroSnackey That's because studio Ghibli makes movies. Not just in Japan but anywhere in the world, TV budget are microscopic compared to movie budget. TV animation has to be done faster and with less money, which is why it doesn't look as good. To be fair though, a lot of anime with extremely crappy animation still work really well. The kids don't care if the animation is good or not. When your show is popular and makes tons of money with a crappy budget, why put more money into it? As an animator myself, I understand that my work exists to serve the story, not the other way around. Great animation is eyecandy, but it's not what makes you keep listening to a show. Great characters and plot are.
@AfroSnackey
@AfroSnackey 10 лет назад
It wasn't an insult to refer to the archetypical anime animation as "choppy". Quite personally, I think that's what gives it it's charm, the same goes to other cartoons with different animation style. It's really cool to see what people can come up with to portray the world among us as well as integrating experiences that aren't possible in real life, especially from foreign countries no less. It's reasons like these are why I keep coming back to cartoons. - Beautiful, thought out designs - Touching our hearts with excellent writing, characters - Integrating rich concepts within the knowledge we've already come to accept

well, I do think 3D is replacing 2D, its been happening for years and not seem to be stopping. There would always be places that will do 2D and stop motion, but these places are getting more and more scarce.. BUT that does not mean that 3D animation is easier to make. it is actually more expensive, since to make 3D animation you not only need an animator, but you also need someone to model that model, someone to rig it, texture, light, render and so on.. while in 2D its mostly drawings...

Hey Zenioul, Thanks for the comment! I doubt people would see tangles and think its 2D animation. You used the word "traditional", which may be confusing for some people, but the difference between 2D and 3D is quite apparent I think. And regarding the graph editor - unless you're doing some kind of stylized animation, you would eventually have to spend a lot of time there. I have not seen a 3D animator who does not keep that window open for a large part of the process.

Hi Bloop, I agree that 2D and 3D animation are quite different in the sense that the tool is different and that changes a bit the workflow. But I feel like all the documentaries, DVD bonuses etc... only talk about the tools and not the actual art that is animation. And when you take the core of animation (be it drawn or computer generated or stop motion), it's the same.

I was originally thinking of going into 3D animation because it seems the industry is growing and could use a lot more people in that area, however, I enjoy drawing so much that I'm not sure if 3D is right for me if it's more dependent on programming, graphs, and curves. But I'm also scared that the 2D animation industry will start to grow smaller as more movies and films are transferred to 3D. What do you guys think? I would really appreciate different opinions and perspectives.

It's easier to animate in 3d and takes less time once you have the rigs set up. An individual can produce a quality 3d animation without spending too much time. It also easier to edit 3d animation. With 2d animation, it would takes months if not years for an individual to sketch, ink, and color each and every background and character movement. There is no easy "fill" command like in 3d animation. However, there are low quality rigs being set up in 2d animation for a lot of low end shows.

interesting video :) based on your knowledge and experience, does getting a job become more difficult the older you get? i know this question may sound stupid, but i really want to work in the industry and sometimes i'm scared that i'm too late to start

bloop animation could you please tell me about the movie named dragon ball super broly which was released in 2018, I want to specifically know if it's 2D or 3D animation. and another question related to movies such as the toy story 1 which was released in 1995. was that in 2D or 3D animation .... I believe 3D animation didn't existed that time but the movie has those graphical content and the colors makes it like 3D. so it's hard to point out. please let me know about this question as well. just in case if you haven't seen the movie. try watching out a clip on RU-vid. please do reply to both the questions. thank you.

I feel like he's underselling 2D animation, i mean its practically the difference between being an artist and a puppeteer the way he describes it but apparently art isn't as hard compared to 3D animation, i mean am i wrong, is drawing art really that easy?
@giascle
@giascle 10 лет назад
It's absolutely not that easy. That bothered me too; they're equally difficult in different ways. In 3D, the character is modeled, rigged, and then moved like a puppet, as he says. But in 2D, there is no puppet. You have to have an incredible understanding of volume and how to turn things in space and how to keep all the sizes consistent, and then you need the skill to translate that understanding into the drawing. If you have all that, congratulations, you've drawn one frame. Now do it hundreds or even thousands of times, keeping in mind no one is even going to notice your immense technical ability - they only care about what the character is actually doing.

Yea, i agree. It seemed like he was trying to make 3D animation sound harder. Well it may not be easier or harder work, but the fact is that you have to be a skilled artist to be a 2D animator, while 3D animators don't need that at all.

As someone who works with 3D animation, I assure you 2D animation is fucking difficult. With 2D you have to hand draw each frame and make sure that it's consistent enough to not look anomalous when the frames are played at a high framerate. With 3D, all you need is attention for detail, and most of that is on the technical side, cause one you have your scene set up in the 3D software, you can animate whatever the fuck you want and not worry about each frame looking any different from the next

ssnakezz The only thing I dont agree with your comment is you call 2D animation "art" and not 3D animation. If this wasnt your intent, then ok. But, both 2D and 3D are art, 2D just requires you to be an extremely better and skilled drawer.

The animation for animes often is made by people in Korea or China etc. It was really funny to see the fandoms response to a certain show. They aired an episode with truley horrible animation (it was a mistake and they later aired the finished episode) but no one was made. Everyone just thought it was super funny and made jokes by shrinking cosplayers heads etc. anime&Manga fans are really awesome in generall :D

I am 33. I grew up watching 2D cartoons. For my birthday, my mom got me the Looney Tunes Golden Collection. It is great. I may do an online Animation class so I can make animation like that. I already have a copyright ona cartoon. Fantastic stuff.
