For the Rush, I had a floppy with drivers that I had made by splicing together files from different driver versions, after many hours of trial and error. I remember this floppy being extremely important to me, since it was the only way to get most games to work :)

It's certainly a better way than installing different drivers for different games :)

Hercules Stingray 123/3D was my first 3d accelerator card. I bought it quite early when the Voodoo Rush was released. My card was an early dual plane version with 6MB of ram. The card that you have is single plane, probably newer and higher clocked model. Teenage me thought that Voodoo Rush must be better than Voodoo1 so I was quite disappointed that the performance was worse than Voodoo1, like 10%-20% slower. I still have good memories of it. Played Turok, Quake 1&2, Half-Life etc. Back in those days if you got 15-20fps of glorious 3d accelerated graphics, it was acceptable. One advantage of Rush is that you don't need a passthrough cable that will degrade your image quality when using higher resolutions.

Teenage you thought the same thing as teenage me. Now I know, that newer doesn't always mean better.

I was about 15 when I bought my first 3d accelerator card, a Diamond Stealth II Rendition Verité v2100 card and overclocked it immediately and put a giant heatsink on it. I could not afford a Voodoo1 card. After watching some benchmarks it wasn't that bad after all, I played Quake2 with it and was so happy I could enjoy it with the colored lighting etc. When the Voodoo2 came out I could actually afford one because I saved up for it as I knew it was coming. The Diamond card served me well for the 2D part of things. I never had any interest in those crappy 2d/3d 3Dfx cards (rush/banshee), even the voodoo3's were crap in my opinion. After the great Voodoo2 3Dfx lost the battle. I remember thinking the Banshee could not be worse right, it's like a Voodoo2 with 2d capabilities and it's newer, but like the Rush it underperformed. I've seen them being used on Lan-party's, not impressed. I ended up owning 4x voodoo2 12MB's in 3 PC's around 1999, 1 with SLI setup. At the time Quake3 entered the scene late '99 they were completely redundant and quite awful actually. Got the nVidia TNT2 Ultra for a short while and bought a brand new GeForce DDR at launch which was a great card btw. Improvements were incredible back then, you really couldn't keep up. Great times though!

I'm actually trying to get my Banshee working right now, no luck though. I've got three of them and none of them wants to cooperate with windows drivers. Be glad you never got one.

Seems 3dfx really had a bit of a hard time combining 3d with 2d before the voodoo3

Actually 3dfx relesed the Banshee in september 1998, an excellent 2d/3d card, in my opinion the best card of 1998.

@@3dfxvoodoocards6 I bought a banshee back then, still bitter that they nerfed the voodoo2 to make it, and so so driver support especially if you didn't have internet to try and find patches

I think plenty of people couldn't have cared less though, most computers had multiple slots, and everyone with an existing computer already had a video card for 2D. Personally I had an older S3 Virge card, which while not much use for 3D(in part due to poor support,it wasn't as bad as it's reputation when it was supported properly) it was excellent for 2D.

I am in the process of rebuiulding my 1997/8 pc which I had as a kid. I alreayd have my pentium 200, pentium 300 and pentium 2. I have s3 virgre dx 2mb and 4mb. And now I also have voodoo 1 diamond 4mb... is this the best one? I think this is the one I had. I have so many parts because I can't remember clearly what I had. The only thing I remember is that I had voodoo card that connected with a cable to s3 that had 4mb of memory :P
@KITR-UK

Well, if you want the best one, it would probably be Miro Hiscore 3D. It's got 6MB. But other than that, Diamond Monster was the best.

In practice, the rush doesn't actually feel faster because the 2D chips are about the same speed. It's still a huge upgrade because now the games no longer complain "no 3d accelerator available" when starting
@DoubleMonoLR
@DoubleMonoLR Год назад
The only comparison shown with the Virge here was in 2D, support for the Virge in 3D games was pretty limited & I think typically older games with lower requirements.

was it slower because it shared memory bandwidth with the 2d parts?

Everyone hates my graphics card :( There is an unofficial driver for The Macronix that will launch a little more games than the original one because it supports newer Gilde versions. I had an S3 Virge before that, which actually wasn't that much slower. However, most games refused to start with the S3 Virge because there was no 3D accelerator, at least they run with the rush - albeit slowly. A Voodoo 2 doesn't make sense with an MMX 200, does it? I'm not satisfied with the performance of the Macronix Rush, but I didn't want to upgrade the pc too much either, it's still a retro PC for older Dos Games.
@Just_a_Lad
@Just_a_Lad 9 месяцев назад
Couldn't you run the games in Software Mode on that S3 Virge?
@Bergwacht
@Bergwacht 9 месяцев назад
Yes, but hexen2, for example Only in a smal window, otherwise I have far too few fps. and when playing games that require 3dfx, the computer simply freezes after 10 minutes on the macronix@@Just_a_Lad

@@Bergwacht you were probably happy when some games were at least somewhat playable with that card. Graphics cards of that era were bad overall.

The AT3D chip isn't "faster than NEC PowerVR" LMAO. The PowerVR, which is from Videologic, is generally slower than a Voodoo Graphics but sometimes as fast or even faster, depending the game, if it is paired with a good CPU with solid FPU performance. Your footage of Turok is probably the Banshee in D3D mode.

Yes it kinda was kinda crap Was final reality released before or after the card? I kinda forget despite being at assembly when it was first shown. I forget if 3dfx was a sponsor but its not entirely out of question it was one of the cards it was targeted at. Edit: i think they premiered it at asm anyway

Terrible protznaniya, very difficult to listen to speech. And if the video itself is interesting and informative, then the voice acting spoils everything.
