Sadly that is true and i for the love of god hope they stop i mean even in my old country the prices for nintendo stuff have gone up by 400% thats insane! And my old country is a full on playstation or pc nation.
To a point yeah. But it will also bring in more supply with people realizing they can make a quick buck selling an unused console which should help offset some of the inflation from demand.
Man, this just makes me miss the 3DS era so damn much. People will never realise the atmosphere and vibes us Nintendo fans had during those times. 2011 - 2016 era was just perfect for me.
They were great years! Ocarina, 3D Land, Link Between Worlds, even got One Piece Unlimited World Red just because it was cheaper lol. Fantasy Life is indefinitely Ni No Kuni's sibling as I finally got to play that on Switch
@Logia SD Well it was the era of Nintendo Directs with Iwata, Trinen and Reggie. It was a different time where Nintendo wasn't soulless game company #78 with their then playful nature
I'd actually love for them to bring it back🤷♂️ Have it be a "second pillar" to the Switch. Make a "Nintendo Portable Pro" which plays Switch games and include backwards compatibility with the 3DS and original DS, and they could just take everyone's money
With manufacturing cracking down with the microchips there's no way they will go back and produce more 3ds Its over- all Nintendo can make money on is keeping the e shop up
Well, to be fair, it is a really nice handheld system, even to this day. More portable than the Switch and has a fantastic library of games, including some of the best remakes Nintendo has ever made. Not to mention you can play the entire lineup of original DS games on it too.
Of course my favourite system is becoming expensive just as I'm finally old enough to start making money myself to finally buy games for it. Just my luck.
Literally nobody was talking about Metroid Samus Returns when it came out. There was like a bazillion copies at Best Buy when I went to buy it, and then it got a a major price cut because nobody was buying it. Metroid and FZero are franchises that get hyped up soooo much online, but people don't put their money where their mouth is.
I mean, that just proves it's a very vocal minority. Which I am apart of, and I buy these games. But I'm not enough to make up for an overstock on this game. Also, it's worth mentioning that a lot of Metroid fans jumped on with the Prime games. So a lot of them aren't as jazzed about the actual metroidvania type games like Samus Returns.
I feel like these are good intentioned videos that are meant to inform people of a problem, but the only thing they actually accomplish is a bit of panic and people who don't really value their 3DS collection to take one look at what they don't play and say "hmmm yes I do think I will become part of this problem and turn an obscene profit."
@@silvermoon2608 I think they mean that people will buy 3DS games solely for the stonks. They don't "value their collection" as in they will purposefully buy 3DS games now just to scalp them later.
So true. Did this with the 2ds xl and now seeing the crazy prices for the same system and games i got for dirt cheap not even a year ago is pure insanity.
3DS is really easy to put custom firmware on now. You can digitally back up your physical library and emulate every Nintendo console up to N64 on it. I love the console for that reason, and I'm actually into the 3D effect, which you can't emulate on other hardware.
i think the reason as to why the 3ds prices are going up is because the playerbase who played it at launch is getting nostalgic for these games and want to replay them all over again
Definitely agree with the “played a franchise for the first time on switch and now gonna go back to older games” factor. In my hype for bravely default 2, I played 1 and second prior to that release. I actually bought dq8 literally today after playing 11 last year (first dq game).
There is another problem. Even if you buy digital, you can run out of space very quickly. Each 1st party Nintendo game is like 6,000 blocks. Plus, have you seen other game storages? Persona Q2 is 22,000 Blocks and Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is nearly 30,000! I have a 32GB Card for my 3DS and I’m already starting to run low.
But titles are being ripped off the eshop, so I dont think it'll last for much longer, also for me personally, I'd rather go physical for most games and only buy games digitally if they are too expensive physically or are digital only.
@@user-tw4lt3po6v I live not far from a big city and I live near major highways and I still don’t get anything anymore :( I use to get them all the time. I loved seeing all the different Mii’s and the games people were playing and stuff.
@xXTenma'sShadowXx same for me too! I would also have mine in my bag in high school back in like 2016 and 2017 and I would get street passes all the time! I would also bring it to conventions to get them too. It was like a street pass gold mine at conventions. I hope street passes can become common again but I doubt it :(
It was always a fun treat to see what kind of people you came across, I'd even pass people by in the car! I miss those days, I don't think they can make anything quite like that again
3ds games and prices have been getting higher and higher ever since Nintendo finally discontinued it. It isn't a Metroid thing, though Samus Returns is slowly rising in price little by little due to the surge in the revival of getting a brand new meteoid game.
@@LegatoSkyheart i wouldnt compare the 3ds to the gamecube since the gc was competing with the ps2 back in the days,.. the 3ds have the whole portable market for him self so a lot of games specially the popular are easy to find BUT the limited edition system are slowly claiming,.. everything gamecube related is hard to find and ofc expensive
@@ReyZar666 The GameCube competing with the PS2 is irrelevant to what I said. GameCube collecting started seeing a rise a couple of years ago to this same degree and the point GameCube games started seeing a price hike was at or around 10 years after the system had launched. So yeah it's not all surprising to start seeing 3DS games go up in price right now especially when some of these games haven't been in print for years.
I love this conversation so much! Always great to hear a chat with fellow DS lovers. For me the DS has an interesting history as it is the console I grew up with, not GBA or anything like that. My first console was a Pink DS Lite and I loved that thing. Of course with not game-friendly parents the games I had were Big Brain Academy (underrated game) and Nintendogs. I do carefully took care of that console that GameStop was impressed when I finally traded it in for a Pink DSi. During high school and college I didn’t have much money, and was not able to afford a 3DS, and couldn’t play those games. When I finally got a 2DSXL, I fell in love with the series once more, and Street Pass helped me feel more connected in my lonely college days. Nowadays, I do have a bit more cash but am having trouble finding games I’ve always wanted to try. I finally scrapped up enough to collect all the Professor Layton games, my favorite series, and am playing through them one by one. My only regret is not purchasing more games when I was younger (though, can it be a regret if I didn’t have the means anyways?). The game I am hunting now, which I have lost all hope for is Ghost Trick. I fell in love with the demo but never could afford it. Now I never will… but it is still on my watchlist, and I will keep hunting! I digress. Great convo guys, can’t wait to hear more! I especially love the retro content 🧡
happy hunting to you! and if you truly cannot find a copy of ghost trick - the home brew and custom firmware scene will hook you right up. sthetix’s RU-vid channel is wonderful. you’d want to look at his videos on ds games, which include different ways such as forwarding or twilight menu.
@@Gaspe19 well... they know whats up. 3DS can easily be hacked and the games will be "free". Switch is barebone and the hack cost as much as the console. Hence the jacked up price for 3DS.
200 bucks for a console that can play literally EVERY Pokemon game, excluding LGPE and SwSh? All for absolutely no additional cost? Not to mention being able to trade with my existing N3DS. Not to mention the thousands of other games available from the DS and 3DS era? Seems worth it to me. Although I already have a Switch anyways, so it wasn't really an either/or proposition lol.
When the 3DS was relevant, I always wanted to get so many games, but I didn’t want to be glued to a tiny handheld. Now that it’s old, I’ve had the inclination to pick one up cheap and see if I can find a handful of great games at a low price…nope. Everything has been priced sky high… oh well.
@@realone3602 True, modding's always possible. Have a DSi XL with some DS games and they look absolutely crisp👌🏽. But, again, it would be so much more lucrative to have them officially available on the platform I'd want it on.
Bought all the big hits for me. Missing 5-10 but got a good 15-20 of the ones I wanted really cheap at gamestop. Printed out my own casing Gamestop had a deal 4 games 14.99 and under for 30$. I think its still there but only 3 games for 30$
Frankly, I'm just happy to see Jibanyan in a thumbnail again. I miss Yo-Kai Watch so much, but it doesn't seem likely that the Switch games will get localized...
I snapped up all the limited edition 3DS consoles and physical games I wanted in the last year so I’m relieved to have missed this peak. The consoles never dipped in price much but games were going for an absolute bargain. I still have a couple left to get so I may have to get them before the prices here soar. Great video as always guys. Love the new content
I knew this was going to happen and bought like 10 games last summer! So happy I did! Theres so many hidden gems like Yokai Watch, Story of Seasons, Azure Striker Gunvolt, and Dragon Quest VII and VIII!
@Cyber Console wolf I think it's easier to just use browserhax. The "steel diver" method should have already been patched? Or it's just less efficient. The 3ds hacks page says it's "outdated"
@Cyber Console wolf Uh, what? That is simply not true. If you go to the 3ds hacks website, the instructions for hacking any 3DS with the latest firmware requires browserhax (or at least is strongly recommended) It definitely works, because I literally just did it last week with a New 2DS. Unless the term "browserhax" only applies to one specific method of patching the 3DS through the web browser? I would think that putting some files on an SD card and opening a browser link would be infinitely simpler than whatever is required for Steel Diver or Flipnote Studio?
The 3DS is one of the best consoles of all time. What a great system with amazing and unique features as well as awesome games that you only can play there.
Just started getting back into my 3DS again, missed it so much. The homebrew scene has helped so much. Scalpers do suck but videos like this won't make anything worse, everything is being scalped these days because pandemic and people suck. Also the digital 3ds eshop is still up, so just buy them digital at retail price if that's the worry.
It’s not scalpers, it’s resellers. 90% of people who are selling on eBay and Amazon are a little group of folks who go around your communities, pick up stuff for reasonable prices, and then flip it online. Meanwhile, Jeff Bezos is getting richer off these folks backs and they are happily doing it. I no longer buy anything from those sites because of resellers. They are garbage people and don’t even know it.
Yo-kai watch 3 has always been ridiculously expensive in the west, they only made around 2000-3000 physical copies so the price for a physical one was sent through the roof almost immediately
NOA really didn’t want to touch Yokai Watch anymore by that point, so they must have put out the bare minimum print run to fulfill an obligation to Level-5
Lol i remember how rare it was i had to pre-order mine and luckly i still have my physical copy. Never finished yet but i want to get back into it again
I’ve been meaning to get Samus returns again (sold it a couple years ago), then I saw the ebay prices shooting up and snagged a brand new copy off Amazon for 45 bucks yesterday.
I have an OG 3DS that I bought on day one, so I have the Ambassador's Program games. I bought a New 3DS XL Solgaleo and Lunala in early 2019 and I grabbed a purple 2DS XL when it was on sale in a local store early last year because the prices were already climbing up. As for games, it's been hard to buy physical games when I started looking earlier this year. I bought a few that had prices close to normal store prices, but I grabbed several games on sale on the 3DS eShop. Capcom puts the Ace Attorney games on sale every now and then, and Atlus had a big sale a few weeks ago as well. I go check every once in a while and I also check on Facebook markerplace for games. I am not planning on selling any of my consoles or my games. The only reason why I grabbed a 2DS XL was because the prices were already climbing and if my 3DS XL broke, I would have another one on hand. At the moment, I jump between my 3DS, my Switch and my PS Vita. I love my 3DS so much. I would love to buy a New 3DS (non XL) but I could buy a third of a PS5 for that price.... or half of a PS4.
My 3DS is still my favourite system even though I own a switch lite. I live to scour my local flea market for games to add to my perfect collection. I still have many games I still wish to play on the system and although it wasn’t for everybody, I adore the 3D feature. I miss the street pass and all the fun video features. Anybody remember Dinosaur office?? RAWR
It’s just the power of Nostalgia, the 3DS was a heavy hitter and has an amazing library f games not even including the eShop titles and VC. My 3DS xl is a literal portable arcade. 30+ games downloaded from VC alone, and I’ll be adding whatever I can before the eShop sales stop on that system.
I’m just glad that I own basically every 3DS game that I really want, the only ones left are ones that I can live without and are more novelties or vague interest (Ever Oasis is the only one that comes to mind)
Oh my god Ever Oasis is my favorite game if you haven’t played it yet I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT ITS AMAZING AND I LOVE THE GAME AND ITS STORYLINE IS SO GOOD
Nintendo cut off support for 3ds way too early in my opinion. They should still be releasing games for it today but instead they are killing it completely
Try the last 3+ years actually, before the pandemic ever started. Over pricing (not just with games but everything) has been a massive issue forever and these giant sites that allow 3rd party sellers not to just stop allowing 3rd party sellers all together to sell on their sites or do something about the overcharging of products. Nintendo is far too expensive to begin with though and you almost never see any of their games drop in price after a year or so like other companies do with their games. Been waiting on a Wii game all these years to come down in price and have yet to see that happen. Not paying $200 for a single video game that will only give me maybe 50hrs or so of play if I'm lucky -_-
I remember when I first got my 3DS and being disappointed that I couldn’t get the GBA games, heck I wish the 3DS came with a GBA adapter to let us play GBA games considering it does have a GBA mode as seen with the ambassadors program.
Still, I would have been absolutely willing to pay for GBA games if they had sold them in the system. I guess Nintendo just didn't want to sell them because they couldn't add actual Virtual Console characteristics to them, since those games ran from the NDS hardware inside the 3DS, which basically was GBA hardware as well.
I was a part of the ambassador program and I took one look at Metroid: Fusion and said “meh, I already got it on my GBA.” The battery died in my copy of Fusion and I don’t have a soldering iron to replace it, much less the skill to do so. I’m still kicking myself for not taking FREE games.
The 3DS eShop does still have regular sales! I check the 3DS eShop every week or so and in the past year I've been able to scoop up quite a lot of games that had physical prints for quite cheap (Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for $3 CDN, Project Mirai DX for $12, Culdcept Revolt for about $8?). Capcom, Square Enix and Sega tend to discount their games significantly every so often as well as Atlus which is a godsend because physical copies of Atlus games on 3DS (SMT, Persona Q, Etrian Odyssey, etc.) tend to sell for well over MSRP and usually over $100.
This video prompted me to dig out my 3DS and give it some love. Restarting Pokémon Alpha Sapphire and keeping an eye on some eShop prices. Very surprised to find Ocarina of Time 3D and Link Between Worlds are both permanently £16 now! Thanks for this video, guys.
Thankfully my 2 3ds’s still work great. Retro gaming is always gonna be very expensive. So always hang on to your retro games. You never know when that sudden desire top play one will hit you. As soon as the 3ds was discontinued I knew prices would start to going up.
As someone who's been watching very closely on my collection prices. The 3ds has been holding in value for quite a while now, even Samus Returns was starting to climb at the beginning of the year. So I don't think those new announcements have had much impact as of yet.
I haven’t had a 3ds since like 2013 and recently picked up a 3ds xl, it’s awesome I forgot how great they are. Wanted a new xl but they’re pricey…. Really picked it up for the e shop to download games on sd’s… gonna start trying to find old ds/3ds games for fun they’re everywhere
I just bought few months ago a new 2ds xl which came with few great games for only 100 euros. Also few weeks ago I was just scrolling through my local electronics store and found that they had a couple of copies of some 3ds games and I got them for really cheap brand new. I was so lucky that i did found those just before these prices going up
I have been a huge fan of the DS and 3DS, got a few spare brand new limited edition 3ds consoles and a lot of games as I want to be able to play these for the next 10-20 years, also the 3ds has a unique feature that makes it very hard to emulate with the full experience, so I expected it to have a chance of being a more expensive console to collect for.
Exactly, me and countless others are at an age where we can finally start collecting for the systems we grew up with, and since scalpers are acknowledging this, prices are going to go up and up and up.
@@chrishasflo8170 this is exactly what im trying to do, im hoping to get one off of ebay for like $105 in the next few days but seriously, modding a 3ds is so unbelievably easy nowadays, and not particularly risky. just buy a cheaper 3ds with an sd card, and install luma3ds in minutes to play any north american game card you want
Last year I bought the Japan exclusive Hello Kitty New 3DS brand new for ~$115. Looking at recent eBay listings, it has nearly tripled in value. It’s wild how much the prices for 3DS stuff has exploded in the last several months.
I bought a 3DS XL last March, and it was an awesome purchase. There are a ton of great 3DS and DS games to play on it, plus it is very easy to softmod to play SNES/Genesis/GBA on it (have had very few issues with these games on an old version 3DS). I definitely recommend it whether you want to softmod it or not.
I bought a Nintendo Switch in March of this year. I haven’t owned a Nintendo product since I was kid with the DS Lite. Now I’m in this whole phase of playing older games and games I missed out on. The following April, I bought a Samus Edition 3DS on eBay just to play Samus Returns and Alpha Sapphire. Some VC games too. Really enjoying things so far.
I just picked up a 2DS for $20. It's my 3rd 3DS device. My other 2 are collectible [Black New 3DS with Pikachu plates and Pikachu 3DS XL] and they're mint so I don't take them out anymore. I just hacked the 2DS and added hundreds of games from NES all the way up to the 3DS. It's great that modding the system makes it region free. I used to have a 3DS LL for Japanese games, but importing games was expensive.
Glad I am keeping all my DS’s. I will never sell another Nintendo console again, especially after seeing how expensive it is to get a GameCube and it’s games. Plus, upscaling is also hell.
One thing id like to mention is that if your cool with modding (especially on og 3ds) it opens alot of doors ...you can get basically any gb/c/a nes snes genesis tg16 and more games running on your console (yes snes works on 3ds through emulation but can be made to look like a single vc game)
I’ve been getting back into some of my DS and 3DS games this year. I till have my launch day 3DS. I feel very lucky to have all those ambassador games now. That’s the only way I was able to pay Metroid Fusion. They gave a pretty good selection of free GBA games. The NES ones were okay, but I had a lot of fun with them too as a kid. This year I was about to buy a copy of Samus Returns, which was already $40 used at the cheapest. This was before Dread was announced. I’d hate to see how that’ll go up in the coming months.
I got a 3ds for the first time in December, mostly for the eShop ones and all the legacy content on it. Playing through the amazing Super Mario Land 2 right now. I grabbed all of the 3d classics because of you guys! They're so good. I suspect it's a trend, the video I made on getting a 3ds in 2020 is consistently my top performer.
its true. i just bought myself a new 3ds xl over the weekend. a major games library and a must have for collectors. plus its fun to play and my kid loves/has loved her 3ds
I'm so glad I bought Radiant Historia and WarioWare Gold when they were on clearance. 4:35 You mention Monster Hunter Stories. The game was actually ported to iOS and Android devices for $19.99 if you ever want to play it. I saw it go on sale for $5 one day. Still collecting for the 3DS to this day. Good luck to everyone!
Until there's a new 3DS / DS emulation device in the future that features dual screens and improves upon the system overall, there will be a healthy demand for the 3DS & 2DS consoles
A couple of years ago I got a refurbished Majora's Mask New 3DS XL from Gamestop for $120 and it came practically brand new, not a scratch on it. Still works perfectly and has become my main system, glad I bought it when I did. Has all my ambassador stuff on it too. I've noticed game prices rising and have been trying to grab a few that I want too, but there's still plenty I don't have. Being in Japan though, and preferring to collect NA games, it's a bit tough as I'm limited to where I can buy from.
Glad I held onto my 7 3ds systems! also got a great ton of games at clearance. trying to not get rid of systems/games, but it does cause a space issue.
@@anemone2374 I dont personally but this is a great one it's good for japanese one too since you dont have yo use the eshop unlike the other method it's very straightforward and you only need a pc and an sd card
Love my 2DS and New Nintendo 2DS XL. Missed out on the ambassador program, but enjoy having the ability to play the first 3 Metroid games anywhere, and also the first 8 Zelda games in one spot, also still enjoy New Leaf and Wild World.
I have had Metroid Samus Returns on my wish list for a while and was shocked to find it had jumped from about £20 to £35 (and sold out at CEX). I have no issue buying it at full price on the eShop
