[3DS] How To Install CIAs From PC (Best Installation Method)

In this video, I'll be showing you how to install CIAs to your 3DS SD Card straight from your PC. This will allow you to bypass slow FBI or network installation speeds. You also will not need to copy the CIAs to your SD card initially, so this will come in handy if you have limited space available. Overall, this tool will be much faster and more convenient than a normal CIA installation. This is the best way to install games onto the 3DS currently.
This video will show you how to dump your unique movable.sed, boot9.bin, and seeddb.bin files from your console as well. These unique console files will only need to be dumped once, and then you won't need to do it again. You can simply run the ci-gui application and install CIAs right away next time. This makes CIA installation very easy and convenient.

Can't thank you enough for this. The download speeds on CIA were a pain... the highest I'd get was around 100 kb/s which is still better than what I've heard from others. This method works like a charm! Quick and simple

Excellent Guide and some great little utilities. Worked like a charm. 22 CIAs installed, with file sizes ranging from 1-3 gig. Probably saved 12hrs+ trying to install everything using FBI. Edit: "Probably saved 12hrs+ trying to install everything using FBI." My original comment was exaggerated based on a guess as I used two different methods of downloading/installing the CIAs and I was not always monitoring the process. I just did a test using FBI and Custom Install, if we assume I had 15GB of CIAs already downloaded on my PC and I either used FBI (no batch installation) or Custom Install (using batch installation), I worked out that Custom Install would have saved me about 114mins of time. --With FBI - 134 minutes and 44.21 seconds --With Custom Install - 20 minutes and 19.05 seconds Goes without saying, Custom Install rocks! Again thanks for this guide.👍 P.S: My 128Gb SD card is practically full now😛

@@ianswift3521 So looking back, the time saved was an exaggerated guess. I don't recall what I was getting at the time because i would either queue up a bunch using Hshop on the 3ds and just let them download while i slept, or I would download them to my PC and transfer things to the SD card then use FBI on the 3ds. To test out the speed for you, I just installed "Harvest Moon 3D A New Beginning" using FBI. It took roughly 3 mins to install the 349MB file @ 1.9MB/s You can extrapolate that out to 9mins for a 1GB file or just over 15mins for a 1.7GB file. I also used the tools in this video to install "Mario Golf World Tour", a 542MB file. Custom-install doesn't report duration or write speed so I had to count how long it took, which I counted roughly 43 secs. Extrapolating that for a 1GB file works out to be about 1 min 20 secs. And for a 1.7GB file, 2 mins 15 secs roughly. So as you can see, there is a HUGE improvement by installing the CIAs from your PC than using FBI. I hope this clears things up.

Thanks fam' have not kept up with 3DS stuff in a long while. This is a great find and I really like that you can zoom in on the files in the video. Was having problems viewing things until then.

when i drop my 00000000 onto my SEEDconverter.exe it doesn't generate a seeddb file, do you have a fix for this? or know what i did wrong?

seeddb.bin is not console specific, so I can give you a download link to the one I generated. Not sure why the program didn't work. you have to have had a encrypted cartridge installed at one time buy a cheap used one install it and your should get a db key.

That's because the seeddb from your 3DS will only contain the seeds for titles that you already have on your console. In this case, you need to look for seeddb list by ihaveamac and put that in the folder instead.

In case anyone's still looking for the answer, it's because extracting the "00000000" and using seedconv (or pressing the home button in gm9 and going to "More..." -> "Build support files...") will only give you a seeddb with all the seeds that are already on your console. To fix this issue, you can find a community-made list of seeds by looking for seeddb list by ihaveamac and use that file instead. 👍

I must've had a newer version of custom install because I didn't need to do that final step; when I inserted my SD card my 2DS told me "new software" and they worked great. Either way, thanks for the tutorial! This is fantastic for when my 2DS decides not to connect to the internet (especially since I still have the 4gb one they gave you, haha)

Try dumping it again because you make have accidentally dumped the wrong file. Be sure to put it in the same directory as well

It worked for me up until the very last step. It gave me the "new software" present on my home screen, but it's just black with no title and says my SD card was removed.

First of all thanks for the tutorial man it helped a lot as I have a SD Card with limited space :). But I have a tiny question, by doing this process am I able to have the game file itself? Or as it was directly installed in my 3ds and dont have the game file? Because every tutorial says I should have it in my SD Card, 3ds folder, and I would like to have a backup of the completed game in my pc but there is nothing there. Appreciate the help :)

Just installed CFW to my 3ds. in the part where you go to gm9/out folder to copy the files i found an additional folder says "essentials.exefs." I think it's there since i just installed the CFW, but i'm not sure if'ts okay to leave it there or copy it as well. Also, when i try to drag the "00000000" file to open with the seedconv.exe, the seed doesn't get generated for me.

"essentials.exefs" is what's created when you turn GodMode9 on for the first time and you press "Yes" to creating an essentials backup. It's a good idea to back this up to multiple storage locations because it contains console-unique stuff, such as a copy of movable.sed (known there as just "movable"), all of which you can extract using a tool called "ninfs" on PC. As for seedconv not working, that's because that "000[...]" is specific to games that use seeds on your console only; if you've never had any, yours will contain no seeds, and seedconv will tell you as much. An up-to-date seeddb can be found by looking for seeddb list by ihaveamac. 👍

Im using a 3ds LL. Followed all the steps in the video but when I launch the game I get an error. When I press a button on the 3ds to continue the system turns off. Error reads as follows... An exception has occurred Processor: armor Exception Type: data abort Fault status: translation - section Current process: matador (00040000001bb200) This is then followed by a stack dump. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I don't know why but I don't need to run the finalizer, the new app is just there on my 3DS. Thanks for a very concise tutorial! This is much much better than using FBI, and will save a ton of time.

Cool man thanks. This is the definitive way to build a game library. It takes 1 hour for a freaking 1gb file to install through fbi and the 2011 3DS only has 3 hours of juice. It'll take me forever to install the games i want Edit: Games that came later 2016 does not work. The tool hasnt been updated in a long time now since 2016

QUESTION: Instead of fiddling with MicroSD card putting it in PC then 3DS etc... Can I output the game onto an empty folder somewhere in Windows and then FTP that folder onto 3ds using FTP client? Ever since I've installed FTPD on my 3ds there's no longer a need to unscrew back panel from the console to remove/insert micro sd card = less wear and tear on the card.

You _can_ generate the file on your 3ds by pressing HOME in godmode9, then selecting "More..." -> "Build support files". However, unless you've already installed every game released after 2015-or-so (in which case there'd be no point in using this program), you'll want to instead use an up-to-date version of the file; look for seeddb list by ihaveamac.

custom install finalize in the Homebrew Launcher (at 8:13 for reference) is greyed out, has a question mark on the logo, and crashes my 3DS when I open it. The game even said it installed fine before the initial trial with the crash. I did everything right, and the .3dsx file for custominstallfinalize is in the 3ds folder. What is wrong?

Oh too bad, my PC does not open the ci-gui.exe says I need python38.dll, I put the dll in the system32 folder and I also installed Python 3.8 but nothing helped.

Thanks for this. Curious,if I were to install games normally from the CIA folder on FBI and hit install and delete (or something like that) would it help me save space?

It doesn't help with smaller SD cards since it only deletes the CIA after installing. So you'd still need the size for installation + size of cia available. Deleting cia files after they install is recommended anyway and you can do it from PC or FBI.
