I'm in the process of renewing my private pilot licence so aviation fans can look forward to a new style of content in the coming months and years. I would also like to emphasize that this channel will continue to produce rail related content and enthusiast can look forward to more Red Devil footage amongst others.
For the moment let's get back to trains ...
(As per the video introduction)
In 1969 the South African Railways placed twenty class 6E1 electric locomotives into service. The new prototypes were of the 3kV power class with a Bo-Bo wheel arrangement and traction strut bogies. The design would ultimately prove itself successful becoming the backbone of the 3kV network for nearly four decades.
In total, 959 units were produced in eleven different batches seeing service throughout the entire country. Today only a dozen operable examples are still used in the Western Cape. Allocated to PRASA they operate the long-distance passenger trains between Cape Town and Beaufort West.
These locomotives were locally produced by Union Carriage and Wagon with GEC providing the components. This footage is limited to the Shosholoza Meyl and Premier Classe operated by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa.

Class 6E was the backbone of transport in South Africa for many years. She's the "African Queen" of the railways. She's ugly, she's slow but rock-solid and almost indestructable. 😊

Worked on these as an assistant while putting myself through technical college - Danskraal - PMB and the single line to Harrismith in 72-3. Once got into the wrong unit and proceeded to make tea - until I realised it was a strange pot! The driver just sat there and said nothing until the penny dropped, then we both had a good laugh - ' .. dom Engelsman! ..'. I was 21-2 and went on to Electro/mechanical engineering and over 45 years of it - great memories - ' ... kyk vir die gaard ..'! 😊

Beautiful video, that blower noise brings back alot of childhood memories it's what made me fall in love with our trains here in South Africa. Wish there was some way of keeping them around even though they're very old.

Thank you Marval! Hopefully, a few will be kept for historical purposes.

Aren't those identical to PKP class EU06 when it comes to electric equipment? The humming of traction motors sounds so familiar.

Could very well be... thanks for the comment.

Thanks again for a good video. Brought back some memories as I worked on these units from Pyramid South outside of Pretoria in the 80's. The Metroblitz was a high speed (those days 120kmph) service between Pretoria and Johannesburg, run with modified 6E units designated as 12E's. This service failed due to the lack of interest and high ticket price (less than R20.00) return back in the day...today called the Business Express. These 6E units was prone to failure on air-brake (lugremme) with multiple unit hook-ups and I preferred the 7E's, also operating from Pyramid South, but on the 25Kv sections.

Thank you for your comment Hannes. Wasn't aware of the air brake issue with the 6Es. Very interesting. Thanks for watching.

Greetings Wayne I was a driver on the 6E and unless you have not worked on them yourself you will never understand the loss of those beautiful mechanical beauties Life can be so cruel as to bring about such a loss

My dad Jan De Graaff was a fitter and turner during the late seventies and worked at Koedoespoort Railway Workshops in Pretoria. He was used by Dr Scheffels and did a lot of fabrication machine work for Dr Herbert Scheffels in the development stages of his self steering bogie. He spoke highly about dr Scheffels, and the work he did, and with such enthusiasm and pride about this new development in train wheels on tracks. He would have loved to live to see the final outcome and especially the speed of trains on narrow gauge rails. Are they stil in use. Wayne keep up your wonderful reporting and video reportage.

Thank you for the first class comment Frans. Pity it took me so long to see it. Yes, very interesting about your dad and his involvement. I assume you've seen Les Pivnics video on YT regarding the high speed trials. Thanks for watching.

What are the differences between the class 5E and the 6E Im shore they are pretty similar. lovely footage it almost takes me back to a time when I believed things were far more simpler.

The late Andre Kritzinger created a beautiful Wikipedia presence for SA rolling stock. Easy to spot externally. The 5E is more rounded and has very different bogies. Thanks for watching.

Great video Wayne! It looks like there is a diesel motor in the coach behind the locomotives on these passenger trains. Is that how they provide head end power to the train? Are the locos not equiped to supply power and heat to the consist?
@WayneSA85
@WayneSA85 5 лет назад
Hi Michael, that's correct. We use generator cars for the consist. This allows the locomotives to be changed without causing any electrical disruptions to the train. In previous years the SAR fitted each coach with a generator connected to an axle and a set of batteries to power each coach. The locomotive featured here cannot supply power to the train. Thanks for watching.

@@WayneSA85 I noticed a small diesel engine on some EMUs round Cape Town. These looked similar to the British Railways class 506 EMUs used on 1500v dc woodhead route. The 506s didn't have a generator and the lights in the coaches flashed when we hit an insulated section
