People often ask me why these cost so much compared to some of the other headsets. These are sound amplifying/noise cutting headphones. Under normal conditions they enhance the sound around you and when something loud like gunfire happens they cut the sound and become like ear protectors. These are built to military specs and are not toys. The ones you get for $50 are toys for airsoft and such. These are real military headsets designed to work and last under combat conditions. Those $50 headsets wouldn't last a couple of weeks in the hands of the average trooper. The same goes for radios. There is a reason military radios cost thousands of dollars and you get the cheap chinesse radios for $30.
Todd Hayslett a bit hyperbolic. tons of people use cheaper ones for shooting and they work just fine if you aren't out hunting terrorists or drug kingpins.
I am an infantry paratrooper and have conducted plenty of operations with something like the Howard Leigh’s electronic ear muffs and they have just worked just fine. I’ve used them now for about 3 years. That being said, they are nothing compared to Peltors, but it is something to keep in mind if you are in a budget and are not trying to spend 600 dollars on a headset.
Is there a difference between these and the Comtac hearing defenders other than the boom mic? Can I add a boom mic later on? I need good ear pro and later on I'd like to have the option to communicate while hunting.
I always get issued a set of these everytime I deploy, it doesnt come with that acu pack, usually it comes with a brown scratch resistant bag, with a little tightener on top so you can close it. its all bundled together in a small white box.
Is it possible to put boomstick, microphone to the right earmuff?, because I'm left hand shooter, left eye, so I wanna put mic to the right side .. is it possible ?
I have a question. If you have a dual com peltor like that but only use one radio. Do you still get incoming radio on both sides or just the side of what down led you are using?

I have an older version with the double A batteries. The noise protection and listening capabilities are very good. The problem I have is when jacked into my ptt and then plugged into my radio, the volume is way low. The radio is a uv5r. What would be the best course of action to bring the sound up within the headset?
How do they sound while shooting? Im not really interested in decibel reduction, so much as actual user sound. For instance the howard leight sports say 22 dec reduction, but they sound loud to me while shooting. The sordins say 20 dec reduction but they sound quieter to me.
They can not be removed from the headset. When not in use I run the wires through the headband cover. This works very well for me and keeps them out of the way.

I liked and subscribed. however, two questions: 1) Lets say you have a dual mic.. but only use one radio, will it distribute the sound to BOTH ears? 2) If you are using a dual mic set up with two radios, will you hear both radios in both ears? Can you run listen only on these? I like to keep my mic on my radio for PTT and just run an earpiece off it. It would be nice to have some ear pro I can just plug in to that.

When using it as a dual comm, 2 radio's, does the incoming sound come in both cups, or right plugged radio on the right side and left plugged radio on the left side?

So if it’s a single comm you don’t get the problem with the mic if it’s not on the wired side it won’t matter which side the mic is on right? I wouldn’t imagine it does since people are left and right handed shooters
Motorola XTS2500, its a UHF 800MHZ radio. They are fantastic comms, It even allows me to hook up a MP3 player when Im at the range practicing on my free time. Best of luck in the Army!
What do you do with your audio cords when not using them? i saw you tucked 1 into the headband for this video. My biggest gripe with this headset is the removal of the audio cords, or lack there-of
911husar I normally have my other one hooked into my PTT. While I normally run all my gear while training, if Im out shooting for fun I just tuck the cord down my shirt. I dont know if I would want a removeable cable. I could see that coming out to easy if tugged on.
They do get warm but Im not sure short of going with the comtac IV will you be able to avoid that. I have not worn them under a helmet I use the rail system attachments with my tac helmet.
I got 4 of these from a surplus store. They work great but we can't hear each other on any of the coms. We hear the com engage. But voices are empty or very faint. How do we get the mics/voices to work in the head sets? Getting really frustrated. We have bee trying for 2 days but can't get the mic to broadcast loud enough to hear anything.
If you got real military units they use a different kind of microphone that requires an amplifier. You can find the ptt units with amplifier built in. You could also replace the microphone with one that doesn't need an amplifier. The radios used by the military and civillian radios have little in common other than they are radios......
You can always call 3M who makes them and get support even for used ones. They will help you with what you need. It would be a shame not to use these top of the line headsets because of an easily fixed problem.
Good review and great to know about the need to use specific down leads when using one radio! Question for you: Are you using a genuine Peltor PTT unit? I want to run my new set of these with a Motorola MTS2000, but don't want to shell out the $300 for a peltor PTT. I found an ebay/China special PTT wired for the radio (about $50), but don't know if there is anything special about the Peltor PTT's that makes them so expensive...
I am using a genuine Peltor PTT. I honestly do not know if there is anything special about the Peltor PTT vs the generic PTT. The Peltor PTT is plastic and feels cheap. Maybe someone out in youtube land might have a better explanation of the differences. I personally did not want to risk it with the cheap knockoffs. Keep an eye on ebay I have seen peltor ones go for around 150. Sorry I couldnt be of more help.
That's a common problem found by many airsofters. The cheap knock off PTTs are usually designed to work with cheap bubble pack radios. Simply put Comtacs and other high end amplified headsets use higher technology than these cheaper radios. The common result is that transmissions will be sent mute. It has something to do with the different mic technologies. Long story short, the only way to get a replica PTT to function correctly is to get it modified to make up for the muffled sounds. This usually costs the same as buying a lightly used real PTT off of eBay. Therefore if you are using a higher end radio that has market support by companies such as 3M or Nexus you'd be better odd just buying the real deal. Hopefully this helps out as I've spent countless hours trying to figure this out, as I needed to use a legit headset with a cheaper common civilian freq radio. Which means I'll end up with a modified PTT to make up the difference.
md123420 Hello MD123420 I don't know what connector that CB uses but there are many different adapters for this headset that will accommodate the headset down-lead. Im sorry I cant be more help. Does that CB use a 3.5 mm jack?
Peltor makes many different ptt units and a couple are for midland radio's. I assume midland would use the same pin out for their gmrs/frs and cb radios.
Got a question, I have a pair of Peltor Comtac III, Single comm. You said on the video that the out going sound was muffled, I run across the same issue. My outgoing sound on a XTS2500/ AN-PRC153 is extremely quiet. I have the mic boom on the same side as the down-lead but the outgoing sound is still muffled. Any idea what the issue could be?
The Final Gear Review Ya that was the first thing I checked, cause i thought that might be the issue. However it was seated in all the way, I wish 3M was more helpful, their first response was to just send it to them and they would charge me 100 bucks, to inspect it, instead of trying to help me.
The Final Gear Review Apparently the PTT has to be of low impedance, I have a genuine Peltor PTT, however for some reason when I broadcast across my AN/PRC-153(civilian xts2500) it is received super quiet. Not sure why the genuine Peltor PTT which is designed for that specific radio would not work. Any thoughts?
3M doesn't certify based on a civilian rating. The standard model is Mil-810F, the maritime enhanced version rated to 20 meters is not available to the public.
Impact sports are for sports.. This is for military and law enforcement. This has superior noise canceling, has a mic and radio output/input. I have the Howard Leights and its a totally different market and purpose.
im using this application with a helmet with ARC rails with a Motorola XTS model as well. Do you think it would be a better idea to get the Peltor Swat-tac iii instead. I believe that they are single comm
You need 3M PN#88063 UPC-14: 00078371880637 Swat-Tac III for Motorola XTS compatibility. Only differences between Com-Tac and Swat-Tac are radio compatibility, color choice, and waterproofing.
