I review and compare the 3rd generation of Yonex Astrox 88S Pro and Astrox 88D Pro which are hugely popular head heavy doubles badminton rackets. The Astrox 88S Pro are catered towards players wanting more speed and the Astrox 88D Pro racket is aimed at players wanting more power.

I was able to have my first session yesterday and in general I would agree with CKyew. The 3rd generation feels like a mix out of 88d pro (2nd) the 100zz and a bit 77pro. It is definitely faster than the 88D before and actually for me also a small bit faster than the 100zz. I love that. It is also lighter but not less powerful than before, just different. But maybe a tick less easy to generate power. On the other hand the feeling is now more direct. At least I felt the 2nd gen a bit hollow. I would say the 3rd gen is now a more all-round racket with power, but also more control with a bit of flex at the right spots but still head heavy and stiff (even a bit less). The only thing that is missing to me is the drive quality. Overhead shots and drives from the second gen and the 100zz feels like on rails. Very solid. The new 88D feels to me less solid and powerful on drives and some shots. The new 88D has the speed of the 100zz and also still lot of power if you hit the ball in sweet spot and at the same time a better defence than 100zz and the second gen of the 88d and more control at the net. I keep testing it and actually consider to switch from my 100zz to this one if I can manage the slightly different timing because timing and shots feels different as CKyew also said. Here my impression of the new 88D pro (3rd Gen): - Clears: 11/10 (wayyy more power and higher) - Smash (9/10) - Drives (7/10) - Drops (9/10) - Net (9/10) - Defence (9/10) - Swingspeed (9/10) In comparison my ratings for the 2nd Gen of 88D pro: - Clears: (10/10) - Smash (10/10) - Drives (9/10) - Drops (8/10) - Net (7/10) - Defence (7/10) - Swingspeed (6/10)

i have that racket still, honestly prefer it over the 88d pro, i felt like it just generates faster smashes but not powerful smashes. so i end up using the 99 pro since i felt like it was identical power and little bit faster imo. i would love to see this new gen material be used in other pro tour rackets

Great review! Very informative. From my opinion it sounds like the 3rd gen 88dp pro is similar to the Victor tkf enhanced in terms of smaller head, more flex in the shaft. In fact, I made the switch from the 2nd gen 88dpro to the tkf enhanced and haven’t looked back. The increase in speed and defense has got me enjoying this racket.
@momotow8286

@1Flyingfist
@1Flyingfist 27 дней назад
The thruster enhanced edition is kinda sluggish in defence, especially compared to a fast racket like the NF800. But it also depends which version of the Thruster that you have. One of mine was noticeably head heavier than the other one. But still not as head heavy as the 2nd gen 88d pro

Excited for the following tour/game/play review. I would like to ask though, if ever you're planning to switch rackets, would you choose the astrox 88d or 88s 3rd gen or would it be the nanoflare 1000z (if I remember correctly you were slightly tempted in switching to 1000z on your review). One more question, would you give your take or comparison between the 88s pro 3rd gen, arcsaber 11 pro, and nanoflare 1000z. If I'm not mistaken these 3 rackets are relatively fast paced and have balance points below 300mm. Which among these 3 is better in these categories: raw power, stable shots, better defense, and overall playability. (Video recommendation if possible). Thank you always for the great and lit reviews from you. Keep up the great work.

Just the review I was looking for! Thanks for a very detailed video, I do have a small dilemma I'd like to pick you brain on. I've been using the Yonex Arcsaber11 since it's release, and relatively recently got me an Arc11 Pro. I mostly play mens/mixed doubles at an university varsity level, and would classify myself as an all-round control player. Lately, I've been contemplating on switching to a more head heavy racket to add some more oomph into my smash. I've been contemplating between the 3rd Gen 4U 88D Pro and the 4U 100ZZ. I've tested both rackets, and while neither of them came naturally since I've never used head heavy balance before, my impressions are that the overall potential of the 100ZZ might be higher. Though, coming from the Arcsaber series and their isometric headshape, I was thinking it might be easier to change to the 88D Pro, as I've never used an oval shaped head before. Do you have any thoughts/insights for my dilemma? Hoping to hear back! 😁

That could be grat to have some table with all the tested racket (but i do realize its a lot of work sadly, so hard to get). Have a nice day.

Hey CK, Quick question as someone that mains the 2nd generation 88D pro in a 4U configuration. What model would you say is the most similar in weight and feel of the 3rd generation when compared to the 2nd gen 4U 88D pro?

Great video comparison but I’m curious as more racket are using the assist bumpers, if the grommets are worn out or damage , does Yonex have the replacements for assist bumpers?

Hoping this is a return to form. I'm still using an original 88s from 2018, and haven't really liked any of the editions since... Maybe I'm just too used to it now, but looking forward to trying this out.

You may be dissapointed. If you didnt like the power in 88D pro orange compared to original ruby red 88D 2018. Then you will like the 88D pro 2024 even less. It is head lighter and less stiff than the 88D pro orange. And much less powerful than OG 88D red. Power (Head heavy): 88D > 88D pro orange > 88D pro 2024 Stiffness: 88D pro orange > 88D pro 2024 > 88D red Maneuverability/control: 88D pro 2024 > 88D pro orange > 88D

I honestly don’t think Yonex will be able to top what they made with the Gen 2 Astrox 88’s. This review convinced me to get the Gen 2 88D Pro. Trying to find one in the UK is almost impossible they’re all sold out! Just goes to show how successful that racket is.

All rackets are: astrox 88d pro, tour, game, play and astrox 88s pro, tour, game play. Theres also an astrox 88play (not s/d) for beginners.

I wanted something more powerful than 100zz but found 2nd gen d pro too demanding. The 3rd gen is the sweet spot for me. Not too heavy or slow but full of power.

Hey, CK! I was wondering since if I'm considered an all-arounder player, would the D or S be more suitable for me since I already have enough power for smashes in doubles?

It would be easier if the swing weights/balance point comparisons were just in a table so we can see the relative comparisons easier. I don't really need to watch the machine swing the rackets, the data is what I care about. I would love some of the data compared to the Victor Thruster TK-F Enhanced as well since they're relatively comparable and popular. Other than that feedback, I enjoy the content.

I’m having hard time choosing between the NF800 Pro and the Astrox 88S Pro Gen3 4U, and I noticed they are in different categories one’s head light and the other's head heavy. But in CK's video, the swing weight seemed similar.Astrox 88s just 1 gram heavier. Can you share your thoughts on these rackets from your experience using them?

How does the first gen compared to 3rd gen 88d pro 4u? I've always found the 1st gen 88d at 90-100% power it's difficult to find the timing because of its unique flex. The rest of the setup is to my liking. How does the flex compare for gen 3?
@TonyNguyen-it7vd
@TonyNguyen-it7vd 3 месяца назад
2024 version is more stiff, but head lighter than 1st gen. 1st gen is more powerful (head heavier) than the orange 88D pro, and even more powerful than 88D pro 2024. Power: 88D > 88D pro orange > 88D pro 2024 Stiff: 88D pro orange > 88D pro 2024 > 88D Maneuverability/control: 88D pro 2024 > 88D pro > 88D Among the 3. New 88D pro 2024 is easiest to handle for a new player.

I came to this video thinking CK would give a review for this racket so good that he’d alr have replaced the 2nd Gen 88D Pro. If @CKYew switches his main racket from the 2nd Gen 88D Pro to the 3rd Gen 88D pro, i’ll do the same too. for real! 😏😂

😳😅 I know that feeling. I still have my Armortec case, but I fell on the racket while on train. 😢 hardly got to use it. I guess that Armortec would be like the Astrox 77, or the Astrox 88d pro 2nd gen
